In this day and age it seems we can’t escape those moments in life when we need a boost to our finances. Especially when we have a society where money is how we trade our goods and services now. Even if we don’t agree with the current system of money we still have to live inside of it. It isn’t always easy and sometimes we have an unexpected bill pop up, an emergency happen, or we simply just need to upgrade our current flow of money to meet the needs of our lives better. The spell I created below can help you do just that! This spell is meant to bring a thick flow of money you need into your life very swiftly. The last time I used this spell after creating it, it brought me exactly what I needed times three into my life and quicker then any other abundance spell I have ever used. Keep reading to learn how to cast this spell and get a thick flow of money into your life swiftly.
The basics of Abundance spells
Before we get into the spell work let’s first talk about abundance a bit, so you know how to use it and connect to it. When you hear the word abundance what do you right away think of? Most of us would immediately go to money and wealth. The word abundance simply means to have a lot of something. But, abundance also means so much more than that and influences every area of your life. Abundance is more than wealth. It’s a rich and full life. It means all of your needs are met and you have no wants. You not only have all your needs met but, you have more and the ability to pass on that abundance to those around you. Abundance is having your cup full and overflowing with each and every energy, thing, or desire you want and need. Abundance magic is all about increasing wealth in our lives. It’s important to remember that if you are working with abundance specifically to call in money, that money like magic, is a neutral tool, simply a form of energy. Your money mindset can have a big impact on the ease with which you attract money and material goods. There are lots of different spells that can help you call in money, but if deep down you believe that money is harmful in some way or that you are not worthy it will be hard for you to keep it for long. If you want to really go in depth on abundance and how to work with this energy check out my guide HERE!
Why cast this spell on a Thursday?
While you can always cast your spells whenever you really need them, I won’t gatekeep you on that. You can amplify the potency of your spells and increase the outcome of them. You do this by giving them a little extra oomph by casting them on the days that align with the energy you are working with based on the planets that rule and influence that day. The reason to cast this spell on Thursday is because, Thursday is a day ruled by Jupiter. Jupiter is drenched in masculine energy and is all about the practical aspects of your life. This day is all about connecting to the energy of finances, legal matters, success, wealth and fame. This day is about big energy connecting you to the actions you need to take to meet your goal. This energy is all about thriving and is one of the best days and times to work the energy of abundance, prosperity, and wealth! If you want to learn more about the energy of Thursday and how to work with it you can read my guide about it HERE!
What you will need
Fire safe bowl
Rice
Cinnamon
3 Bay leaves
Pumpkin seeds ( you can swap these out for a symbol of abundance that aligns with the current season For winter I would use pinecones or I would use peppermint)
Sugar
7 coins
3 bills
Candle
How to perform
Get into a sacred container while visualizing money flowing to your bank account easily and quickly. Fill your bowl with rice Next, add cinnamon for abundance and wealth Take you bay leaves and on each one write a dollar amount you would like to receive and then add them to the bowl for money flow Then add sugar to speed up the spell and sweeten the outcome Add pumpkin seeds for abundance from the fall harvest OR your seasonal item that represents abundance Next take your coins and add them connecting you to the physical money you will receive Then, take your bills and fold them in towards you, calling the energy of abundance and wealth from your physical money to you while you recite the spell in the video above, then add your bills to your bowl. Next, light your candle while envisioning that dollar written on your bay leaves coming to your bank account easily and quickly then recite the spell below three times as it is lit.
“Money flow quickly Money flow easy Every dime I spend Back in my pockets, make it times three Money flow thickly Money flow swiftly For the good of all And harm to no one It’s on its way to me I am protected I am connected I am at peace My bank account happy”
Place it on your altar and let your candle burn until it dies out on its own. Come back to this spell once a day and recite this spell again three times as you light the candle again ( depending on size chosen you made to replace it) for the next 7 days until next Thursday and watch your money come to your bank account easily and swiftly.
As always Happy Casting and make sure your intention is set clearly before you cast and you feel worthy of the money coming into your life now swiftly and thickly!

What is Valentines day?
What is Valentine’s Day? St Valentine’s Day is an annual festival to celebrate romantic love, friendship and admiration. Every year on 14 February people celebrate this day by sending messages of love and affection to partners, family and friends. Historically Valentine’s day is tied to Saint Valentine. Saint Valentine was said to be a priest named Valentine who was imprisoned and beheaded by Roman Emperor Claudius II for assisting persecuted Christians and secretly marrying Christian couples in love. He even tired converting Claudius to Christianity while he was imprisoned. He was beheaded on February 14, which later became known as Valentine’s Day. To learn more about this Romantic holiday about love, passion, sex, and commitment check out my guide about it and Lupercalia HERE.
First a bit about ethics
Because, we are talking about love spells and sex magic I feel before we dive into the spells I have created here we have to talk a bit about it. Some people will tell you to never do a love spell. They will tell you that it is a manipulation to create a relationship with this magic. They will say it is taking away someone else’s free will. That very well could be. But, the way I see it is these kind of spells are there to amplify and assist, and direct energy and feelings that already exist and are there. We cannot create something out of nothing. That is universal energetic law. So, is it really taking away someone else free will or simply speeding up something that would have already happened? I won’t tell what to do. It is up to sit with these thoughts an sit in reflection and decide for yourself what you think. It is up to you to follow your intuition and decide if these types of spells will be apart of your practice.
Attraction love spell
Valentine’s day is a holiday all about honoring love, romance, and commitment. This makes it one of the best times to cast a love spell. Particularly one to attract your ideal partner and love of your life. Try this love spell today to attract that special someone you have had your eye on into your life. Keep in mind this is not meant for someone in a relationship already, this is not a break up spell.
What you will need: A rosebud or entire rose flower Two pieces of paper A pink candle
How to perform: Light your candle and on either side of it place two pieces of paper, one with your name and the other with that of the person you are attracting Chant the spell below: “You and I will be one, in love and unity. Venus, goddess of love, listens to my plee. Let this love come to me. My heart is waiting to be loved by you (name of the person you are attracting) and with my soul dear Venus, I thank you.” Repeat the spell 3 more times while you visualize your future partner running towards you, imagine them hugging you and telling you “I will love you forever.” Let the candle burn while you take the papers and either wrap your rosebud in them or close the papers inside your flower petals. Than take them and bury them in the earth. As you do Recite “ From now on you and I will be united in Love as deep as the Earth.” Once done blow out your candle and place it on your altar. For the next 3 days light it to feed the spell. Happy Casting!
Self love mirror work spell
Since, Valentine’s day is associated with Venus it is a day to wrap you up in the embracing comfort and cloud of love. The energy of this days invites you to retreat into warmth, love, and compassion this holiday and energy focuses on. Today is one of my favorite days to put aside the shadow work, to put away the reflection, to put away working with the darkness and I focus on the love and light. This spell below, which is really more of a ritual is based on mirror work and using my favorite magical tool of all a mirror. Use the energy of this day and the amplification and clarity of a mirror to allow you to see yourself for the magical, worthy, and sovereign being that you are. Allow yourself to fall deeply in love with yourself as you gaze into the reflection of your own eyes with the energy of Venus and love as your guide.PS. if you need to learn more about how to use a mirror as a magical tool you can read my guide HERE.
How to perform:
Grab a pink candle and a mirror, find a quiet space, light the candle, Take some deep breaths while you pick up the mirror and begin to meditate on the energy of love, and the color pink, Once you feel centered in that energy and full of love for yourself. Take a deep long look into your mirror and recite self love mantras and affirmations as you make eye contact with yourself. Do this until you feel like you are totally and completely in love with the worthy sovereign, and magical being that you are.

What you will need: Two red candles and red ribbon A photo of you and a photo of your sexual partner Herb blend: Basil, catnip, lavender, cinnamon, rose petals, hibiscus
How to perform this spell: Start by meditating and think intensely about making love with the person you want, if you want added magic you can masterbate as well. Next take the two candles and roll and/or anoint them with honey. Once they are covered in honey roll them in the herb blend.
Next recite” love and lust, I ask you to listen to my request to have (name of your loved one) by my side (your name). ask you to be with my beloved and to light a fire between us. Ignite the spark. Let lust and passion drive our story and our relationship”. For added magic you can add a deity of love, passion or lust to the spell as well. Then take the ribbon and join the candles together with your photos, With the candles still burning repeat the magic spell again. At the end of the spell, let the candles burn out completely, then call your partner and let the explosive magic begin! Happy casting!
Love and harmony spell
This simple spell works beautifully for couples or individuals seeking to enhance harmony and connection. This is because when we focus on harmony within our relationships we can experience a deeper Valentine’s Day by creating more peace and understanding.
What you will need:
Two pink candles (for love and harmony) A piece of paper and pen A few dried rose petals
How to perform:
As always get yourself into sacred container however works best for you. But, make sure you are creating a container focused on the energy of love, harmony, and peaceful connection between you and your partner. Write down your intention on the paper. For example, “I invite harmony, passion, and understanding into my relationship” or “I open myself to love that is true and fulfilling.” Place the rose petals on the paper, fold it, and place it between the two candles. Light the candles and focus on your intention. Visualize the flame as a beacon of love, radiating positivity into your life. Let the candles burn for 10 minutes, then snuff them out (never blow them out). Keep the folded paper somewhere special.
Make Rose Water
The rose is one of my favorite witchy plants, to work with mainly due to it being so versatile. The rose really is one of those magical plants that can be used in so many ways a lot like some of my other favorites bay leaves and cinnamon. Plus, I love that I don’t have to waste any part of this plant! You can use all of it from the petals, rosehips, rosebuds, the thorns, and the stems. Roses petals have soo many magical properties as well including: beauty, love, passion, lust, peace, purification, loving memories, harmony in the household, divination, ancestral work, funerary rites and healing ! (keep in mind, these will vary depending on the COLOR of the rose too!) Which is why they are the perfect plant to work with on Valentines day! One of my favorite ways to work with them is to create some rose water.
So, what is rose water? It really is what it sounds like water infused with the magical and medicinal properties of roses into it. Rose water is commonly used in witchcraft for various purposes due to its associations with love, healing, and purification like we talked about above. It will add a magical, potent, and loving boost to any spell that calls for water.
Before you make your rose water you need to decide what color rose petals you want to use. Each color of petals will have its own unique energy it infuses into your rose water. Check out below a list of what I find to be the most commonly accepted meaning for each color. Keep in mind it will differ from person to person and culture to culture. So, as I always say follow our intuition and use what works best for you. Don’t take this as an end all or be all.
red-True Love, Beauty, and Mourning
purple-New Love & Magic
pink-Grace and Self Love
white-Purity, Youth, and Secret Love
yellow-Friendship and Happiness
orange-Creativity and Enthusiasm
black-Death and Beauty
blue-Attaining the Impossible and Healing
peach-Closing Deals and Appreciation
lavender-enchantment, splendor, wonder, and mystery
green- strength and fertility

Have you been having an issue with someone in your life causing you harm or pain? Do they not even seem to see the pain they cause you and how it affects you every single day? Why not take matters into your own hand and a hold mirror up to their face and make them see the error of their ways? The let them see spell I created below will do just that! It combines the energy of mirror magic and its reflective properties to simply let them see themselves plus it helps speed up their own karma coming their way. I recommend casting this on Saturday to grab on to the karmic energy of Saturn who rules the energy of that day.
What is Karma?
Before we get into the spell I want you to understand the components of the spell and energies you are working with. First up what is Karma? Karma is the Sanskrit word for action. Karma is a belief that a person’s actions have consequences, which may return to them in this life or in the future. It’s a concept that’s central to many religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism It is equivalent to Newton’s law of “˜every action must have a reaction’. When we think, speak or act we initiate a force that will react accordingly. This returning force maybe modified, changed or suspended, but most people will not be able destroy it or break free from it. This law of cause and effect is not punishment, but is wholly for the sake of education or learning. For the sake of our growth through experience on our path to awakening in enlightenment.
Laws of Karma
The Great Law- “As you sow, so shall you reap.” The Law of Creation- Life doesn’t just happen. It requires our participation. The Law of Humility- You can’t change something if you refuse to accept it. The Law of Growth- “Wherever you go, there you are.” The Law of Responsibility- Whenever there is something wrong in my life, there is something wrong in me. The Law of Connection- Even if something we do seems inconsequential, it is very important that it gets done as everything in the Universe is connected. The Law of Focus- You cannot think of two things at the same time. The Law of Giving and Hospitality- If you believe something to be true, then sometime in your life you will be called upon to demonstrate that particular truth. The Law of Here and Now- Looking backward to examine what was or forward to worry about the future prevents us from being totally in the here and now. The Law of Change-History repeats itself until we learn the lessons that we need to change our path. The Law of Patience and Reward- All rewards require initial toil. The Law of Significance and Inspiration- You get back from something whatever you have put into it.
What is mirror magic and why work with mirrors?
Mirror Magic, an ancient practice intertwined with the essence of self-discovery and empowerment, serves as a gateway to understanding our innermost selves. Mirrors are powerful tools allowing you to step into the realms of magic and spirituality. Using them in mirror spells offers a profound opportunity to connect with one’s own essence and claim space in the world. Mirrors are both simple and complicated tools of magic. Through the ages, they have been used for scrying, searching for the truth, finding your personal unknown – and as portals. They have been also used in protection spells to reflect unwanted energy back to its sender. Which is the way we will be using mirrors in this spell. I love it because, it is not only a shield to alert you to attacks and unwarted energy attachments but, also as a proactive attack by sending the energy back to them.
Always consider the ethics before you hex
Since, we are talking about doing a bit of baneful magic by using a hex we have to talk about ethics a bit. You have some who practice and say to never do such a thing. To never curse or hex. Some who quote a threefold law from the wiccan RELIGION at you for why it is wrong. If that is you that is fine but, this hex spell isn’t for you. If this isn’t you and you understand that in order to heal we must also know how hex. If you have weighed the ethics, and potential unintended consequences and still feel it is the right thing to do. Then this hex spell is for you. Just I ask that you make sure to take the time and before any spell you cast but, especially the baneful ones you have considered all possible perceptions and possible consequences. You have done a pros and cons and made sure it’s something that is ethically aligned with you.
What you will need:
All you will need is a piece of paper, some tape, a pen, a black candle for protection, and a white candle for opening the eyes of the person doing you harm. For added potency you can carve protection sigils into each candle along with your name on the black candle and the person causing you harm on the white candle.
How to cast this spell: Take a piece of paper and write the name of the person causing you harm and a list of all the wrongs they have done to you and their effects. Then take the paper and tape it with the writing facing the mirror. Light a white and black candle in front of you. Then while holding the mirror, recite “ mirror, mirror, let them see all the wrong they have done me. Open their eyes and open their hearts to finally see the pain they have caused me clearly.”
Happy casting everyone! Let those who harm you no longer be able to hide from the pain and harm they have caused you. If you want to expand your magical knowledge more check out my guide below!

In this day and age it’s almost impossible to not have some kind of financial debt out there. So, why not use your magic to help alleviate some of that. This banish debt freezer spell jar I created a few years back is a great way to do that. The last time I used this spell, a few weeks later I got a letter in the mail telling me a lawsuit had been filed against the company that had won and my debt was included in that and it was now gone and forgiven.
I know most people use freezer jar spells on people but, that’s the beauty of magic we can adjust them to create something different. So, why not apply them to situations we want to freeze out of our lives as well like debt? Another thing to note is most use freezer spells to pause a situation and as temporary bindings. Meaning they don’t usually do freezer spells that are intended for extended periods of time. It’s typically used as a way to place a temporary boundary, giving you the time to address the issue without the immediate pressure or doing magic that could be permanent. But, remember magic and your freezer spell will follow the intention and energy YOU set and direct it with. Which is how I created this lovely gem!
What is a freezer jar spell?
Before we get into the spell and how to do it let’s make sue you understand the basics of a freezer jar spell. I love freezer jar spells because, they are an extremely effective form of magic and they work very quickly. Freezer spells are great for multiple intentions including bindings, to “pause” or put a situation on hold, to bring peace or even freeze a person in their tracks. A freezer spell is exactly what it sounds like it is. It is a spell that utilizes the freezer in your home to freeze your intended target or situation in a vessel.
Keep in mind some may tell you they are considered a closed practice. I obviously don’t agree with this since they are part of my practice. I don’t see why if I have access to a freezer or a way to freeze things like the below freezing weather Minnesota is in now, I can’t use it. It is going to be up to you to decide how you feel about it. Keep in mind there are some freezer spells that utilize techniques from the Hoodoo folk magic tradition including sour and sweetening jars. If you want to stay away from maybe appropriating, simply leave those ingredients and methods out of your personal freezer magic and spells.
There are so many different intentions you can do for freezer spell jars too!
My most commonly used one is to bind a person in place and remove them from my life. It’s another layer to add when you are chord cutting. I really like to use these on narcists and toxic relationships.
Pause or slow down a situation to get more time to think
Remove a harmful situation from your life
A means to get justice for yourself
preserve love and friendship
To preserve a job opportunity or salary
To stop time from moving too fast
Preserve one’s health
promotes stillness and mindfulness
Promote Self Control and discipline
Remove a bad habit or addiction from your life
Cooling a “hot” situation off
Create one as an offering to be placed on an altar for a winter goddess like Cailleach
The ethical debate of freezer jar spells
Just like with every other baneful type of magic before you cast this one you have to sit with the ethics and morals of them. Some people will say to not work with freezer spells because of the binding factor to them. Some consider them to be taking the free will away from others. Some just think its wrong and not something you should do like cut someone out of your life. Others like myself, have no problem with them. We understand that our magic is perfectly fine to be used to protect ourselves. Especially if we’ve done everything we can in the physical realm, but still feel threatened, we have the magical realm to help us. So, just sit with it and decide for you what you think and how you feel about them. I won’t tell you one or or the other. It s up to you.
So, what will you need?
A jar or bottle that can be frozen
rice
lemon slices
cayenne pepper
3 coins
salt
Water
A paper with the written amount of debt on it and/or the debt collectors name
How to perform this spell
I recommend casting this spell today (Thursday) since it is Jupiter’s day and tied to money matters or on Saturday which is ruled by the planet of boundaries Saturn.
As always once you gather your ingredients and cleanse them get yourself into sacred container however you like to do so.
Once you are there focus on the energy of money, the amount of debt you are in, and the affects it has been having on your life.
Then take your ingredients representing that money and debt and place it into the jar; this would be your rice, cinnamon powder, and 3 coins.
Next, take a deep breath and now focusing on visualizing that debt being frozen in your life. What that would like and feel like. The affects it would have.
Once that image is set in your mind’s eye, take your ingredients used to bind, banish, and protect and add them to the jar. This would be your lemon slices, salt, and cayenne pepper.
With all your ingredients now inside your jar, take the piece of paper with the debt amount and/or the debt collectors name on it and hold it your hands while you say;
” This slip of paper is the (amount of debt) owed to (name of collector) may this spell freeze it from affecting my life in an unwanted way from this day on. As I will it so mote it be.”
Then fill the jar to the top with water, seal the lid, and place it in freezer.
Watch as the debt is frozen from your life.
For some added potency if the amount is quite large consider adding binding sigils to your jar or burning a black candle as you create this freezer spell jar.

As much as we want life to be easy, with no bumps in the road and we are only around pleasant human beings. We all know that simply just isn’t reality. Sometimes in life we have no choice but, to get out our swords and fight back with a bit of baneful magic against those who have been causing us pain and harm. This could be anyone from a coworker who has been toxic as hell in the workplace you wish you could slap in the face but, can’t. To the family member who has been insulting you, tearing you down, or making fun of your way of life. To the friend who gaslights you and makes you feel small.
I find one of the best ways to get back at someone and protect myself is to just let their own wicked actions, nasty bullshit energy, and unrelenting karma bounce back to them and do its work. One of the many ways we can use our own energy and magic to speed this up and amplify it a bit is by using own of my favorite magical tools a mirror to cast a karma mirror spell.
A karma mirror spell is a spell that uses a mirror to reflect back to a person what they have done to others. The idea is that karma works like a mirror, returning what a person has put out into the world. Which means when we combine the two we create a very potent portal to both amplify and accelerate someone’s karma.
What is Karma?
The Great Law- “As you sow, so shall you reap.”
The Law of Creation- Life doesn’t just happen. It requires our participation.
The Law of Humility- You can’t change something if you refuse to accept it.
The Law of Growth- “Wherever you go, there you are.”
The Law of Responsibility- Whenever there is something wrong in my life, there is something wrong in me.
Try out my Let them feel their own karma hex below today!
Grab a black candle and carve the person’s name and DOB who needs to feel their own karma. Then take the candle and place it on top of a mirror. This allows their nasty bullshit wicked energy to bounce back. Once the candle is on the mirror light the candle and recite “ mirror to see, mirror to know may the karma of your wicked actions become known.”
Let the candle burn as long as it needs to until it goes out. Then leave it on the mirror and place it on your altar. Come back to it and relight the candle and repeat this spell for 6 days or nights. Watch as your target starts to have their karma, nasty bullshit energy, and wicked actions bring them confrontation and everything they deserve to happen for the harm they have brought to you.
Happy hexing witches! I’m proud of you for choosing to pick up a sword and protect yourself. To further your magical research and add some more spells and rituals to your own grimoire check out my guides below!

At Imbolc, the Earth is beginning to wake up and we celebrate the approaching return of spring. We are through the harshest, longest, and darkest part of the winter. We begin to prepare ourselves to awaken from a hibernation and time of reflection. We begin to reach for the light again as we open our eyes, stretch our limbs, and prepare to leave our places of safety to venture out into the wilderness again. Imbolc is a time for cleansing, renewal, and planting the seeds — both literal and metaphorical — for what you want to grow in the year ahead. Imbolc is holiday all about reflecting on the promise of new life and the first signs of spring stirring within the earth. Come with me as the wheel turns again and learn all about this transitional festival from Winter to Spring with me in this blogpost.
First, What is Imbolc?
Imbolc is a sabbat on the Wiccan Wheel of the Year but, is originally an ancient Gaelic/Celtic holiday celebrating the first signs of Spring. The word Imbolc is believed to mean either “ewe’s milk” or “in the belly”, which many believe refers to the birth of baby lambs around this time in Ireland and Scotland. In modern times, most of us don’t understand the harshness of Winter and what a brutal mistress she can be, that our ancestors endured. Not even me who lives in Minnesota. Our winter’s get quite harsh but, I still can’t understand their experience. So, at this time they were coming out of a period of brutal weather. They had endured the harshest part of the winter and their food stores were declining. So when the baby lambs were born around this time and their mother’s milk started flowing, it was a good day. The birth of new lambs and milk meant they’d have more food to last the rest of the Winter season. Another coming mean I come across, is that Imbolc means; “in the belly of the Mother,” because the seeds of spring are beginning to stir in the belly of Mother Earth.
In addition to celebrating rebirth, life, and replenishment, the Celtic goddess Brigid is honored on Imbolc and takes a central role. This is because, another name for Imbolc is Brigid’s Day. I am going to talk about her more below so just keep reading if you want to learn why she is so important.
When is Imbolc celebrated?
Imbolc is celebrated annually on February 1st in the Northern Hemisphere and August 1st in the Southern Hemisphere. Imbolc marks the halfway point between the winter solstice or Yule and the spring equinox or Ostara. Because Imbolc is the midway point between the Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox, it was regarded as a season unto itself. A time of change, when the days are longer and the sun is stronger.
History of Imbolc
Historically, this was a time to honor the increasing sunlight and prepare for the coming growing season. Although winter still holds its harsh grip, the days are growing noticeably longer, and we see signs of the earth beginning to awaken. Farmers would bless their fields and livestock, symbolizing hope for a bountiful harvest to come. Our ancestors looked forward to Imbolc as a sign that the darkest days of winter were behind them. As the darkness began to give way to the light, they experienced a sense of hope and anticipation that the cold, dark winter season was coming to an end.
Imbolc the day the earth begins to awaken
On this day, the earth stirs from its slumber, and the first signs of spring begin to emerge. Imbolc means we see the gradual return of warmth and light, the stirring of life in the natural world, and a sense of rejuvenation that permeates both the earth and our own spirits and bodies. This energy brings a palpable sense of anticipation and renewal as nature prepares to burst forth with life once more. Even though there may still be snow on the ground where you are, even if it’s freezing cold outside, we are beginning to feel the very earliest hints of spring rising in our spirits. After months of turning inward, of hibernation & of rest, life is beginning to stir again. The Earth is beginning to reawaken after her Winter slumber.
Imbolc a day of fertile manifestation
The dormant earth starts to awaken, and we sense a surge of potential and possibility in the air. It’s a time for new beginnings, for setting intentions, and for sowing the seeds of our dreams. Imbolc gives you a chance to reflect on your own life and how you want to grow in the coming year. Now is a time to honor the potential waiting within you as well. It’s the spark of an idea or a dream waiting to come true. Let your creativity and imagination help manifest these dreams!
Brigid the Irish goddess of Imbolc; who is she?.
A Goddess in Irish tradition, Brigid is one of the most well-known because, she is the Goddess of fertility and spring. To many she is also known as the Great Mother Goddess of Ireland, and to Christians as a Saint Brigid. With this energy, Brigid brings the remembrance of our Oneness and of the Eternal Essence of the Divine Feminine. She is the daughter of the Celtic God Dagda, a Fae leader of the Tuatha dè Danann. She’s often depicted with fiery hair and a sunbeam cloak. She was born at sunrise with rays of sunlight radiating around her head. She is associated with many things; Poetry, Healing, Midwinter/Imbolc, Flames/fire, Fertility, and Motherhood.
Brigid is considered a Triple Goddess, yet many references distinguish Brigit differently than the traditional Triple Goddess aspects of Maiden, Mother and Crone. Rather Brigid is frequently referenced having three sister selves with three distinct roles, Lady of Healing Waters, Goddess of the Sacred Flame and Goddess of the Fertile Earth.
Other names she goes by
Brigid is also known as Brigit or Bríg

Fiery Arrow

Cailleach, the Goddess of Winter, heads out to gather wood
On Imbolc, Cailleach, the Goddess of Winter, heads out into the world to gather firewood to keep her warm for the rest of winter. If the weather is bright and sunny, Cailleach is out gathering the wood and will be able to gather enough to make winter last a good bit longer. However, if the weather is bad and cold, Cailleach is still asleep and will soon run out of firewood, and spring will come sooner.
Cailleach is often depicted as a powerful, crone-like figure who embodies the harshness and stillness of winter. When she appears to me she also has a blue aurora about her, and her mythical staff in hand. As the guardian of the cold, she is said to control the storms, the winds, and the snow that blanket the earth during the winter months. She is a symbol of death and decay but also of transformation and the wisdom that comes with age and experience. While Brigid heralds the coming of spring and new life, Cailleach represents the slowing down and rest that winter brings, urging us to pause and reflect. On Imbolc, Cailleach’s presence is especially poignant as it marks the shift from the deep, inward-focused energies of winter toward the budding life of spring. Cailleach holds the power to either prolong winter or usher in the first signs of spring, depending on whether she decides to create a fierce storm or allow the warmth to return.
Cailleach is a goddess that until this year I had only read about and had not worked with. This is for many reasons but, the main one being I hate winter. Well, now it’s hated. since I have been able to walk alongside her in the winter wonderland that is the Minnesota woods this year. This winter I have listened to her call from the woods to come and join her time and time again. Each time she was able to help me heal a layer of trauma, let go of parts of me that need to rest, and remember the strength found in the resilience of winter. This Winter has shown me that Cailleach teaches us that winter’s resilience and silence is just as important as the energy of growth. Her winter reign creates the space needed for rebirth and growth, teaching that sometimes we must go through periods of stillness, darkness, and challenge before we can emerge into the light. If you want to learn more about her check out the anthology that is within the Dark Goddess Collective I am apart of.
Common traditions for Imbolc
Most traditions observed around Midwinter are focused on awakening Nature from its sleep and dormancy and the coming fertility of spring. Honor Imbolc by including traditions connecting you to the rhythms of Nature. Let’s take a look at some of the many but, certainly not all, of the ancient traditions associated with Imbolc. Listen to your intuition and celebrate Imbolc in whatever way calls to you.
Use milk and dairy as an offering to Brigid or in your spell workings
Traditionally milk and dairy are included in meals. This is an easy way to work ancient traditions into your modern Imbolc rituals. Leave a glass of milk as a offering to Brigid or your spirits at the table or on your altar. When you have your Imbolc feast make a dish that features cheese, cream, or milk. Lastly, you could use milk in spells or rituals. Some of my favorites are adding it to ritual baths for fertility and purification or in abundance spells.
Lighting a fire in your hearth
As a fire festival, Imbolc symbolizes the return of light after the dark days of winter. The hearth fire was central to celebrations, representing warmth, protection, and the growing power of the sun. Fire is also used to purify and protect and is an Imbolc symbol for these reasons. In addition, fire is an element sacred to the goddess Brigid and employed to honor her on her sacred day.
Making a Brigid cross or dollie
The Brigid’s cross is a four-armed cross constructed of reeds. It is traditionally made fresh every year and hung above the front door for protection. This has become one of the most popular symbols of Imbolc.
Bless your seeds to plant this coming spring
Now is the traditional time to bless the seeds for the coming planting season. I f you already purchased seeds for spring, leave them on the altar on the night of Imbolc to charge with positive energy for fertility for planting in the spring.
Cleansing and purification rituals Imbolc is also a time of purification and cleansing after the festivities of Yule. Cleansing rituals are common at Imbolc as a way of sweeping away the dense and dark energy of winter. To usher in the joy and hope of Spring.
Magical themes of Imbolc
Every season and every pagan holiday has certain concepts and magical themes. Which means, depending on your tradition and needs, you can weave one or more of these themes into your personal celebrations. This festival on the wheel perform spells to harness the energies of winter, spring, fertility, awakening, growth, manifestation, and renewal. This is also a time to reflect on the past year, but in a way to be present. To truly let go of the things that no longer serve you. This festival is reminder to harness the last bit of the reflection power of winter as Spring begins to awaken for the planting soon just ahead. On Imbolc, we see the following magical rituals and spells below as well. Remember these are just some of the themes and energies you can connect to and work with on Imbolc.
Since, I am a grey witch I look for the duality in every single energy I work with including sacred times like Imbolc. The duality of Imbolc is as deep as it’s fertile energy. That is because, this is the transition period aka a liminal period between the harsh winter and the warming, new life of spring. Imbolc is that moment between what was and what’s still to come – a time to pause, reflect, and let the first seeds of hope take root. It’s not about rushing forward or forcing change but gently preparing ourselves for what’s next. Imbolc is a festival that celebrates the duality of light and dark, and the need for in our life. It’s reminds us of the wisdom found in the reflection and introspection of winter and the spark of hope and creativity in the light of spring. It’s a time to honor the cyclical nature of life and rebirth.

Reflection questions for Imbolc
Remember how Imbolc is a liminal time. This is because it is a time when we are sitting on the edge of awakening and growth. Growth often begins in darkness and stillness like the essence and energy of winter we have been in and we are now beginning to awaken from. To celebrate Imbolc is to honor the bravery of new beginnings by going within and doing the reflective work needed to heal. One of the best ways to do this is through shadow work . During Imbolc, Shadow work focused on letting go of what no longer serves you, renewal, the return of the light, and awakening to the fertility of spring. If you would like to learn more about shadow work you can purchase my eBook here; you can book me for a 1:1 session as your guide here; and you can watch my free class previously taught on it through Divination here. Also don’t forget to head to the shop and register for my 6 month course on shadow work starting at the end of this month!

Then, recite this spell as you stare into the dancing hot flame now ignited, “candlelight, fire bright, burst through the darkness and stagnancy inside of me. I ask Brigid to lend me her fire of inspiration and creativity.” Close your eyes and repeat the prayer two more times. Visualize a small flame in your heart growing bigger and brighter. This is the fire of passion and creative ingenuity. Let it continue to grow in your mind’s eye as the candle burns down. When the candle is done burning, pick up the carnelian stone and carry it on you. Wear it daily and know that the fire of creativity is inside of that stone. Lending its energy to you. Now CREATE. Whatever that means to you: writing, content, arts and crafts, a new project at work, music, etc. etc.

By drawing on the symbolism of nourishment and sweetness, essentially invoking a “land of milk and honey” into your life . Bringing you plenty of wealth, happiness, and well-being to you. Mix a small bowl of milk with a teaspoon of honey. You can personalize the spell by adding other ingredients that resonate with your personal goals (like cinnamon for motivation, or basil for business success) Then take a deep breath and Stir your mixture clockwise while focusing on abundance and blessings. Make sure you focus on what it is you specifically want abundance of in your life and what it is you want to sweeten up your life. Place the bowl on your altar as an offering to Brigid, or pour it into the earth as a sign of gratitude.

The holidays season of December have passed and the bitter coldness, frozen waterways, and piles of snow mounding on the ground have sent us inside to nestle by the cozy lit hearths of our homes. Where we allow ourselves to do as nature does and be still, hibernate, and rest. Allowing the silence to fill our heart with wisdom as we ground back into ourselves with our loved ones no longer gathered around. January marks the beginning of a new calendar year and is often viewed as a time for reflection, renewal, and setting intentions for our manifestation for the year beginning to unfold. During this month the darkness and silence calls to us to take a break from everything. We have put in the hard work all last year and made it the end. Now is the time to sit in the darkness of the unknown as we have an entire new year of endless potential and possibilities just beginning to be seen. This month sets the tone for the new story to be told in the year ahead. Come join me in this blogpost to learn all about the magic falling down in each silent snowflake covering the realm during the month of rest, stillness, and new beginnings of January.
History of January
January is the first month of the year according to the modern Gregorian and Julian calendars and its first day marks the beginning of the year for those calendars. Prior to the Gregorian calendar being invented this was the 11th month of the year. since the calendar was more pagan by following the natural cycles of the two seasons and began in March. January’s name comes from the two faced, Roman God of doorways; Janus.
Zodiac Signs For The Month Of January
Those born in January are said to be born under either the sign of the mythical seagoat Capricorn or the ethereal water bearer Aquarius.
Capricorns are typically born between December 22 and January 19. Capricorn’s symbol is a sea-goat, a mythical creature that is part goat and part fish. This is representative of Capricorn’s ability to navigate both the material and emotional realms. Capricorns are said to be hardworking, honest, loyal, and persistent. They are also known for being determined, responsible, and focused.

Sacred Days And Celebrations In January
Every Single month has sacred and important days and celebrations to help you connect to the energies of the month. Plus they usually are a lot of fun to take part in! Below you will find a list of the sacred days and celebrations for the month of January! The common theme you will find is the changing of a year, transition, and the winter season. Also take note how this month is probably the month with the least amount of holidays, festivities, and celebrations. But, first we are going to talk about a few that take centerstage during this month like the duality of New year’s day below!
New Year’s day
The new year is a symbolic time to say goodbye to the old and welcome the new. The new year is the beginning of a new calendar year. The new year is celebrated on January 1st in most countries that use the Gregorian calendar, including the United States. However, the new year is celebrated on different dates in other calendars, such as the Chinese, Jewish, and Islamic calendars. New Year’s day (and eve) is a liminal time exploding with the energy of renewal, transformation, and change. Marking the end of one calendar year and the beginning of another, it offers a secular reason for people to celebrate together. To read more about this holiday and get exclusive spells and ritual ideas read my guide here.
Lunar New year- Year of the snake (2025)
The date of Lunar New Year differs every year and is celebrated by many different cultures across the world, the most well known being in China with the colorful, festive, and loud Chinese new year celebrations. In 2025 it occurs on 29 January. The Lunar New Year is a celebration of the beginning of spring and the new year on the lunisolar calendar. It is celebrated with family reunions, symbolic foods, cultural festivities, and vibrant traditions. Lunar New Year celebrations typically last around 15 days, from the new moon to the full moon. However, the length and ways of celebrating can vary by culture, religion, and region.
This Lunar new year will be the Year of the Wood Snake, the sixth animal in the 12-year Chinese zodiac cycle. The year of the snake is said to be a time for introspection, strategic planning, and personal growth. The wood element is said to amplify the snake’s focus on creativity, flexibility, and harmony. I can not wait for the energy beckoning us in this year of shedding, transformation, completion, and karma. I am just about done with the guide for this lunar year so check back for the update on it! In the meantime you can check out my guide from last year here.
Yule
The 12 days of Yule continues into this month from December with the last day ending on January 5th for most. The 12 Days of Yule is an ancient Germanic/ Norse holiday that celebrates the winter solstice and the rebirth of the sun. It is also a time to honor the gods and goddesses, the ancestors, spirits of the dead, and the spirits of nature. Yule is a time of renewal and transformation, both in nature and within ourselves. It represents the cyclical nature of life, reminding us that even in the darkest times, there is always the potential for light and growth. Yule is a time to shed old patterns, release what no longer serves us, and set intentions for the future. Each of the 12 days of Yule connects us to a different energy and aspect of the natural world both within and without us. To learn more about his holiday and sacred time you can read my guide about it here. PLUS I have written an eBook that takes you on a winter walk through each days meaning and gives you ways to celebrate that day as well. To get access to this new FREE eBook head here to download it.

Magical And Witchcraft Themes For January
January is a month of reflection, purification, and new beginnings in witchcraft, marked by the beginning of the calendar year and the deepening of winter’s chill. It’s a time to set intentions, release what no longer serves, and invite blessings and abundance into one’s life. Performing intention setting and goal rituals during January will have a lasting affect on what you manifest in the year ahead. With the beginning of the new calendar year and the deepening of winter’s introspective energy, January is an enlightening time for divination and spiritual exploration. Especially since this is a month of both the past and the future. January is also associated with the thinning of the veil and themes of purification, protection, and cleansing can be helpful now as well.
Don’t forget to cast fire spells as well during this month to bring you heat and warmth during the cold winter months. As well as connecting you to the hope of brighter and warmer days soon to come. I love to perform fire magic via candles during this month to create a beacon of light and hope for my mental health during the darkest days ahead. Lastly, if you live in a part of the world that freezes during the winter with frozen water ways and falling snow, binding and banishing magic can be extremely powerful and protective right now. Use the power of the alchemy in ice and snow to banish things from your life you need to let go, or to bind someone or something in place that no longer serves you in a wanted way.
The gods and goddesses of January
This month is a potent month to work with and honor deities associated with new beginnings and transitions, such as Janus, Hekate, Lilith, and the Crone aspect of the Triple Goddess. This month is a good time to get to know the winter goddesses that rule this cold season. Some are associated with the dark goddess aspect as of the divine feminine as well. Allowing for a powerful portal to ancient wisdom and magical knowledge during this month as the snow falls. Everyone works with and views deity energy a little differently. Whether you view them as archetypes of the human consciousness, representations of the source energy, or as being entities on their own, there are certain deities that now is the time to connect to and honor them in the most sacred and amplified way.( Don’t forget to grab my eBook in the shop to help you explore this)
This month for me is a very feminine month. When I want to go into the womb of mother Earth. When the dark goddess and her healing, justice, empowerment, magic, and darkness beckons me to sit in her embrace. To listen to the past, root myself in introspection, and hear the healing whispers from my womb in the stillness and silence of winter. During this month a few deities take center stage because they have festivals or sacred days during this month to help you connect with them in a very intimate way. The deities that are going to be the best for you to connect to right now are deities connected rest, rebirth, protection, winter, snow, renewal, darkness, reflection, wisdom, manifestion, the moon, and the starting of the new year. Below we will talk about some of the deities you can work with this month. I could never list them all here.
Janus
January is associated with the Roman god Janus. The month was named after him, in fact. Janus had two faces and looked both forward and back. He was the Roman god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages, frames, and endings. He is usually depicted with two faces, one looking forward and one looking backward. Janus was also the god of the beginning and end of conflict, and had duties related to birth, death, journeys, trading, travels, and shipping. Janus is a uniquely Roman god that does not have any Greek equivalent. This also makes Janus, to some Romans, the curator of the universe and the god of the prime beginning and end.
Jana
This Roman Goddess, whose name means ‘Luminous sky’, shines her light on the new year, extending improved insight and awareness as we move ahead. Jana, is the moon goddess of January, who presides over the Wheel of the Year, doorways, childbirth, new beginnings, and initiations. She is often depicted with two faces, one facing the past and one facing the future. She was worshipped alongside her husband, Janus, who represented the sun. Together, they were considered to represent time and space.
Hestia– Greek goddess
The next deity I want to talk about I personally feel is overlooked far too often especially during the cold winter months. January is the month that solidifies us in the bitter cold of the winter season. Which means we need warmth and heat for us to survive and thrive. Which is why I always feel pulled to her during this time. Especially living in Minnesota I need her to bless my hearth with continuous heat during the long winter months. Not only that, but she can make your home extra cozy during this month while you spend more quality time alone. Hestia is the sole attendant to the celestial hearth of the gods. As the goddess of the hearth, she personified the fire burning in the hearths of every home in Greece. On a very tangible level, Hestia rules the domain of fire. This means that she is directly responsible, at least according to the Greeks, for the fire, the stove, and the heat in your home. Honoring her during January, when the harsh chill of winter solidifies itself in our bones is a great idea right now. She will bless your hearth as she stokes and fuels the flames all winter long. Don’t forget all month long to present her and your hearth with the first offering sacrificed to keep those flames burning strong.
Skaði (Skadi / Skathi) – Norse goddess
Skaði is a Norse goddess, often called the “Winter Queen,” associated with the mountains, hunting, skiing, and the wild, primarily known as a giantess (jötunn) who married the sea god Njörðr. Daughter of a fallen giant, Skadi walks the windswept mountains, a huntress sculpted from ice and legend. Her eyes, sharp as glaciers, scan the frozen realm. Bow in hand, she glides through the snow on swift skis, a predator born of the wilderness. Tales paint her as fierce, her spirit forged in the fires of vengeance and tempered by the unforgiving cold. She is mistress of the mountains, where the sun dances on glacial edges and the howl of the wolf echoes through empty valleys. But beneath the hardened exterior lies a yearning for connection. A goddess caught between two worlds – Asgard, home of the gods, and the wild embrace of the giants. Skadi’s place in Norse mythology is multifaceted and we see this as she is featured in stories with Odin, Loki, and Njordr among others. She’s even associated with snowshoes, and in later stories is said to have married Odin and bore him many children. She is the embodiment of both the untamed wild and a yearning for understanding. She is a warrior queen, a skilled hunter, and a goddess who walks the line between two worlds. Her story reminds us of the power of resilience in the face of loss, the importance of honoring our true nature, and the ever-present tension and duality between harmony and conflict.
Cailleach – Celtic / Scottish
Cailleach stands as a prominent figure in Celtic mythology, embodying the essence of wisdom, transformation, and the cycles of nature. Her presence is deeply rooted in the folklore and traditions of Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man. She is a divine figure often depicted as a weathered, old woman wielding a staff or a wand. This staff is said to have mystical powers for when she slams it on the ground winter will freeze all the land. She represents the embodiment of winter, sovereignty, and the primal forces of the natural world. Since, the ancient Celts celebrated two seasons only, her reign bringing cold all over the land began on Samhain. So, take your time this month to connect to her allowing you a smoother and blessed time during the long cold winter months ahead as the snow begins to really fall and the temperatures freeze the ground.
Baba Yaga
The next goddess we have gives me a very similar energy and feel when I work with her as the goddess we just talked about above; Calileach. To modern witches and Slavic pagans, Baba Yaga is a witch goddess who lives deep in a birch forest moving from place to place among the trees in her hut she calls home on top of giant chicken legs. From time to time when she needs to gather more supplies you might catch a glimpse of her flying by up in the sky from her magical mortar and pestle. She’s a wild and untamed old woman, often seen as a hag or crone, but can transform herself into a beautiful woman to manipulate or trick someone if she desires. Baba Yaga is a goddess of wisdom, healing, transformation, death, rebirth, renewal and autumn/winter. When healing is needed, whether it’s from colds/flu or emotional healing, Baba Yaga can offer healing often in the form of herbal teas brewed by herself. Calling on her during this January can lead you through the forest now frozen and blanketed in snow, to her skull fenced lined home. To peer into the darkness of her cauldron and gain the most ancient wisdom from the darkness of the cosmos that she guards. To learn more about her you can read my previous post here.
La befana
The last deity or as some call her a folklore legend we are going to talk about it la befana. She is a grandmotherly woman who resembles a kindly witch. She brings gifts to good little children, depositing them in stockings hung above the hearth. Some even claim she sweeps the floor before she leaves as a symbol to sweep away the previous year’s problems. Even though she has roots all the way back to ancient Roman festivals, she is most well known for her role in Christian stories and legends. I personally believe this is because the church needed a much more acceptable and tamer version of the Germanic winter witch Berchta. ( I’ll be writing about her soon)
In Italian folklore and legend La befana delivers gifts to children throughout Italy on Epiphany Eve (the night of January 5) in a similar way to Santa Claus or the Three Magi. Another Christian legend takes a slightly darker tone as La Befana was an ordinary woman with a child whom she greatly loved. However, her child died, and her resulting grief maddened her. Upon hearing news of Jesus being born, she set out to see him, delusional that he was her son. She eventually met Jesus and presented him with gifts to make him happy. The infant Jesus was delighted, and he gave La Befana a gift in return; she would be the mother of every child in Italy.
Correspondences For The Month Of January
First, what is a correspondence? A correspondence is an item or symbol that is meant to connect you to a specific energy thru it’s representation. It is seen also as an item to respect, honor, and venerate that energy as well whether it be a deity, an archetype energy, the zodiac energy the moon is currently or for time of the year like a month, which I will list below for you to use. Remember this is just a start to the list for you. You can use any correspondences that connect the magical themes and energies of January. Just follow your intuition on what you choose to work with!
Themes-Reflection, introspection, purification, new beginnings, Protection, reversing spells, conception and creation, spirit work, ancestor spells, divination
How to connect to the magic of January
We’ve talked a lot about all the different types of energies the month of January has and gives us access to work with. So, how can you specifically connect to those energies? In your everyday life you can make sure your affirmations , intentions, and manifestations align with the energies of renewal, rest, reflection, looking back to the past year, new beginnings, and aligning ourselves with the cycles of the calendar year. During this month follow that deep alluring pull whispering your name to go in your shadows to reflect, be still, and rest. Make sure to grab onto the energy of warmth in the fire crackling in your hearth and home as well as you let go of the past year and head into new beginnings with hope as the next one unfolds. You can celebrate and honor any of the sacred days and holidays this month has like both the calendar new year and the lunar one as well.
Some Rituals and spell workings during this time that will be really intensified will be based on releasing the old, clearing away unwanted energy from the past year, and welcoming in wanted energy and opportunities. Other spells that will have some significant meaning right now and help you connect to the energy of January should be centered around new beginnings, manifestation, and setting goals. This month is another month when you can really get some clear and transformative messages from your guides as we are in a liminal time when we can look both back and forward as well. through any means of divination you prefer but, fire gazing or Cryomancy ( snow and ice divination)are some to think about to align with the correspondences of this month.
January creates a very potent liminal pocket of time that is teeming with duality, balance, and the power of transition from one year to the next. It’s a month that really pulls us to go deep within ourselves in the darkness, stillness and silence for introspection, reflection, self awareness, and growth. This makes it a great month to do any work on transformation, reflection and preparation for dark times through shadow work. Allowing the energy of the frozen winter in the days of the new year to prep you for the long introspective months of winter ahead. If you would like to learn more about shadow work you can purchase my eBook here; you can book me for a 1:1 session as your guide here; and you can watch my free class previously taught on it through Divination here.
Since, I am a grey witch I look for the duality in every single energy I work with including sacred times like a month of the year like the one we are currently in, January. January is a month that even though it is frozen, silent, and still it is saturated in duality. January is a time to look both forward and back. In January we close one chapter of our life story and begin writing the new one as it begins to unfold. January for me is the month that reminds me of the duality of new beginnings. Beginnings are both exciting AND scary – it’s a time that is both liberating AND paralyzing. Beginnings are a time of endless possibilities full of hope while also being a time of mystery and fear in the unknown. January is a month that can make us aware of the duality of the time we have left living this lifetime as well. We are both excited for a new year coming to bring us more time while we are saddened for the time that has already gone back.
Final Thoughts
We talked about many things in this blogpost including the history, some celebrations, the different energies and magical themes we can work with during this month. Along with how to connect to those energies, deities we can honor and worship, and how to work with the magic of January. January is a uniquely magical time that invites everyone to plant the seeds for hopes and dreams. While also looking back on the things we just worked so hard to harvest in the year that has passed. January reminds us that even in the darkest nights, in the harshest conditions, and the coldest times we can still find hope and light. It’s the month that shows us the depth of our resilience and our willingness to thrive in harsh conditions. January shows us that just like nature we have the ability to every year become a blank canvas. Ready for us to paint and create something brand new and beautiful again. As the snow falls and blankets nature January’s magic brings the promise of rest, introspection, reflection, new beginnings, and endless possibilities.

New Year’s Eve is a liminal time exploding with the energy of renewal, transformation, and change. Marking the end of one calendar year and the beginning of another, it offers a secular reason for people to celebrate together. As we look upon a new calendar year full of possibilities and opportunities, it is important to start off the right way. Along with making resolutions, I like to ring in the New Year with a bit of magic aimed at accomplishing my goals. removing obstacles over the next twelve months, calling in abundance, and protection. This is a time for celebrating the changing seasons by incorporating spells into your New Year’s Eve festivities. Doing this can set the tone for a vibrant, abundant, and magical calendar year ahead.
What is the new year?
The new year is a symbolic time to say goodbye to the old and welcome the new. The new year is the beginning of a new calendar year. The new year is celebrated on January 1st in most countries that use the Gregorian calendar, including the United States. However, the new year is celebrated on different dates in other calendars, such as the Chinese, Jewish, and Islamic calendars.
History of the New year
While it seems secular now, New Year’s is actually very much tied to ancient pagan celebrations. Many of our modern traditions are passed down to us from the ancients cultures and peoples. New year celebrations go back at least to the Babylonians. The Romans took these celebrations to the next level with copious amounts of drinking, feasting, and partying.
The new year hasn’t always been celebrated on December 31st/ January 1st. In 2000 B.C. the new year was celebrated around the time of the vernal equinox, in mid-March, in Mesopotamia. Today, most New Year’s celebrations start on New Year’s Eve, December 31, the final day of the year on the Gregorian calendar, and continue through New Year’s Day on January first.
The New Year a Liminal Time
As the old year fades away and the new one begins, we find ourselves in a liminal space. This is a time of transition and transformation, when anything is possible. It’s a time when we sit on the edge of one calendar year turning a page for another one to begin. The liminal space between one year ending and another beginning is a special time that should be embraced fully!
The New Year a time of abundance
When the calendar new year comes again it opens up a portal of abundance and wealth. The transition from one year to the next is seen as a chance to “clean the slate” and start anew, creating an optimistic outlook for the future. This includes the abundance of having all our needs met in life. This is a time when we set our intentions for the year ahead and what we all want to manifest. So, on this new years eve we do our best to have our life look like what we wish to manifest in the year ahead. We surround ourselves with an abundance of feasting, drinking, being around community, and loved ones as we ring in the new year ahead. We show the universe and the gods and goddesses all we wish for them to give us in the year ahead.
The New Year a time of reset
The calendar New year is the closing of one new year and the opening of another opening of a new one. This new start comes with a naturally feeling of renewal and reset. It is a chance to press the reset button on our lives, a chance to get it right this time. This is a time to relook at all the past year and reset for something brand new you have never seen before to unfold in front of you. If you want to learn how do to reset your entire life this new year’s eve check our my guide here.
Common folklore traditions
There are many different folklore and traditions around the world for how to celebrate New Year’s Eve. New Year’s Eve is usually celebrated by most with gathering alongside friends and family. Popular rituals include serving food that symbolizes good fortune and making resolutions focused on what one hopes to accomplish in the next year. Along side doing things to draw in good fortune and to protect yourself and the home from unwanted spirits to come into your home. Let’s take a look at some of the many but, certainly not all, of the ancient traditions and folklore from across the earthly realm I have found below.
Ancient Babylonians celebrated the new year with feasts and returning farm equipment that had been borrowed from others.
In Norse traditions, Yule celebrations ended around the new year. The last feasts of the Winter Solstice were huge on this final night to celebrate the turning of the wheel.
In both Ancient Egyptian and Greek societies they paraded a baby around to symbolize the beginning of the new year.
The romans would kiss each other at midnight to bring love and prosperity into the next year plus to also ward off unwanted and malevolent spirits.
For the Aztecs, this was a time to sacrifice children by drowning in order to buy the favor of the rain gods.
DON’T do any laundry on New Years Day. In china it’s thought if you do laundry on New years you are setting up your next year to be full of cleaning
Do NOT cry, crying on January 1st instills a sad and negative mood throughout the next 12 months.
Make sure you wake up at dawn. In fact, according to a Polish tradition, getting up early on New Year’s Eve will make you wake up to the crowing of the rooster (and without the slightest effort) for the rest of the year.
If your dream for the next year is to travel the world on New Year’s Eve in Colombia, people go around with an empty suitcase which, according to ancient superstition, would ensure a nice trip within the year.
Eat 12 grapes (one after the other) just like they do in Spain, where they are said to bring good luck.
Have black cabbage and lentils be apart of your new years feast like the do in the southern United states to call in good luck, prosperity, and wealth
According to the ancient Chinese tradition, on New Year’s Day, you should not clean the house, as removing the dust or sweeping the floor would literally “sweep” away the good luck and the good vibes that would have been attracted by the celebrations and decorations dedicated to the new year.
Observe the weather in the very early hours of January 1st; if the wind blows from the south, the new year will be rich and prosperous; if instead, it comes from the north, then the new year will be problematic and turbulent, so better fasten your seat belts. The wind from the east also brings famines and calamities, while the wind from the west means that the new year will be rich and lush.
According to an Italian tradition, men and women should wear red underwear on New Year’s Eve if they want to find love, passion, good sex, and good luck in the next year to come.
If you live or are celebrating near a lake or ocean, try out this Brazilian ritual on New Year’s Eve, which involves jumping seven waves. With each jump, you make a wish for the upcoming year.
An ancient Persian New year’s tradition that is still celebrated by some in Iran is to light a bonfire and once you do you jump over it twice. On the first jump you say a blessing releasing your past years pain into the flame and then on the jump back. You say a blessing asking for the health of the flame to bless your life in the coming year ahead.
Eat round foods. In many cultures, eating round foods on New Year’s Eve is believed to bring prosperity and abundance in the new year. In Europe and the United States, people eat 12 round fruits to represent each month of the year. In the Philippines, people eat 13, which is considered a lucky number.
Smash pomegranates. In Ancient Greece, pomegranates were viewed as a symbol of abundance and luck. On new years eve people were seen smashing pomegranates outside their doors to bring good luck to the new year. The more pomegranate seeds spilled in the smash, the more luck you’ll have for the new year.
In Denmark, they break plates this tradition is done to ward off malevolent spirits and is symbolic of a fresh start to the new year.
Preparing mochi, which is a Japanese rice cake, on New Year’s is symbolic of renewal and is seen to bring about blessings for the year.
Grab some bread and bang the bread against the walls. The Irish believe that doing so wards off malevolent spirits and brings abundance to the coming year.
Danish tradition includes standing on the chair and “jumping” into the new year at midnight. It’s also believed that if you forget, it’s bad luck. ( I do this one every year)
The New Year and Duality
Since, I am a grey witch I look for the duality in every single energy I work with including sacred times like New year’s eve. I have always loved New Year’s Eve for it’s duality. It’s a time of reflection for me and a time to set my intentions for the new year. It’s a time to reflect on the past while looking towards the hope of the future ahead. It’s a time to not just look at what I want to change and let go of but, to congratulate myself for the all the mountains I climbed. It’s a time when I take a look at what worked from the past year and what didn’t. I am reminded of the constant ebb and flow in life, the constant change, and how to live in the balance of liminal transformation as one chapter ends and a new one begins.
Correspondences for the New year’s
First, what is a correspondence? A correspondence is an item or symbol that is meant to connect you to a specific energy thru it’s representation. It is seen also as an item to respect, honor, and venerate that energy as well whether it be a deity, an archetype energy, the zodiac energy the moon is currently or for A holiday or sacred time like the calendar New year. I will list below for you to use. Remember this is not an all encompassing list and there may be other correspondences to use. Just follow your intuition and use what calls to you.

Ways to work with the energy of New years
However you choose to work with the New year’s eve magic and energies make sure to follow your intuition where it leads you. Make sure you tap into the energies of abundance, renewal, and the closing of one chapter, and the opening of a new one. In your everyday life, you can work with any affirmations, mantras, and visualization work for abundance, new beginnings, endings, reflection, and the changing of the calendar year. Let’s take a look at some of the many different ways you can magical work with the energy of New year’s eve.
Imagine and set your New year SMART goals
One of the number one ways to celebrate new years eve is to sit down, let your imagination run wild and think of all the biggest and wildest goals you wish to set for the year ahead. This is the eve when you are observing the calendar year that you can really think big, let the walls down and don’t think about what you can’t have but, come from a mindset of abundance and focus on what you can have. But, don’t forget to not only let your imagination run with your goals but take the time to set them in a specific way by making them SMART goals. If you have been with me the last year I have written about SMART goals many times, but I do so because using this method changed how I was able to take those goals in my imagination and bring them to life. To learn all about SMART goals and how to set them this New Year’s eve head over to my guide here now!
Visualization
Visualization is great way to set intentions for the new year. This is going to be the practice I am really intentionally committing to this New years eve and all 2025 long. I’ve come to learn with my manifestation work in the past year just speaking things out loud is not enough. I must see myself already having what I want in my hands. So, close your eyes and imagine yourself surrounded by all of the things you want to manifest in the new year. Picture yourself living out your dreams, achieving success, and feeling fulfilled by all that you have accomplished. Hold onto this image as you move forward into the new year, knowing that it will come true if you put in the effort and stay focused on your goals.
Cast protection spells
New Year’s Eve is a liminal time where the energies around us are more susceptible to change. As we look upon a new year full of possibilities and opportunities, it is important to start off the right way. Protecting ourselves, our family, and our space is something essential to do before we commence into the new year. A New Year’s Eve Protection Spell can be a powerful tool to keep us safe and supported as we let go of the old year and prepare for the future. So cast those protection spells this New Year’s eve to protect you home, your family, and your life all year long. Ps. don’t forget to cleanse yourself, your tools, and your space as well before you cast your protection spells.
Reflection through Shadow work
Remember how New years eve is a liminal time. It is time when we are sitting on the edge of change and transformation. In order to move onto the next stage of evolution and change that we are greeting in the new year ahead we must first look back. We must look at the highest heights we reached and lowest depths we sank to down deep. We must decide what we want take from one chapter into the next and what we wish to leave behind. The best way to do this for me is through shadow work. If you would like to learn more about shadow work you can purchase my eBook here; you can book me for a 1:1 session as your guide here; and you can watch my free class previously taught on it through Divination here.
Release work spells
As we go into the new year ahead with hope for a bright future we have to make sure we have left the things we no longer need in the past. One way to do this is to make sure we energetically and magically release the things from the past year. One of my favorite ways to do this on New year’s eve is to write down the things I wish to release. The patterns in the past year that no longer serve me and I no longer wish to repeat. Along with the blockages I met during the past year to align with the correct energies to manifest all of my goals being met. Once I write them down I wait until the clock strikes 12 then I read them out loud and burn them in fire to release the blockage from life. To no longer carry any of that into my new chapter of life.
Abundance and good luck spells
With a New calendar year unfolding before us on New Year’s Eve this is a day we can set ourselves up for a long and prosperous year ahead. We can tap into that unlimited potential this magical unknown year has for us. There are countless different traditions you can do like some we talked about above from around the earthy realm that will bring in abundance and good luck. Along with just as many spells. One really poplar one I like is to place a bowl of coins outside my threshold. When you return home for the first time in the new year (perhaps after a late-night party),bless them for everything you want in the new year to come. To get more ideas for abundance and good luck spells head over to my Pinterest where I have many or check out my abundance guide and my guide all about Thursdays magic.
This spell is my favorite one to do every single New Year’s Eve. It masters the liminal space and energy of change on the night, the magic and mastery of time to bring in a very abundant, vibrant, and magical life in 2025.
Shortly before midnight on New year’s eve Grab 12 candles, I prefer to use white or green, 12 coins, and an herb bundle made of rosemary, thyme, sage, and bay leaves. Take your candles and set them on the floor in front of in a circle to mimic a clock and place one coin under each candle. Then get yourself into sacred container while you focus on what it is you want to manifest in the next year ahead. Once you feel you have a clear vision in your head and your intent is set, sit with it until the clock strikes midnight. Once the you hear the clock chime, start lighting each candle in your circle starting at the top aka 12 o’clock and going clockwise until all 12 candles are lit. Don’t forget to focus on your intention you are setting for the year ahead as you light each candle in your magical clock. Once this is done go around your entire home and smoke cleanse your space bringing in your most abundant year yet. Let the candles burn until they go out on their own or if you are not comfortable with that for safety reasons burn them for 12 minutes for each candle and then blow them out by 1 as the time is met.

No matter what type of witchcraft practice we choose, the New Year is a great time to reflect on the past and set intentions for the future. Set your eyes high on your highest goals, reflect on the past year to release blockages, reset your life, and protect your family, yourself, and your home. Yule may be the most well-known pagan celebration of the Winter season, but it is certainly not the only one nor in my opinion is the most fun of them all. That would be The Saturnalia Festival. The Saturnalia Festival l is an ancient Roman holiday that mainly celebrated the Winter sowing season, as well as honored the god Saturn. The actual dates vary but most scholars agree it was once celebrated between December 17th and the 23rd OR December 25th through the 31st, depending on the calendar that was used. Saturnalia was a jovial time for the entire city of Rome because, everyone in ancient Rome participated in the excitement. Saturnalia was a day when all work came to halt for everyone from the emperor to slaves. This meant even the courts of law were closed. Saturnalia was a time of revelry and social upheaval in Roman society, characterized by indulgence, merrymaking, and the suspension of norms.
When was Saturnalia?
The Saturnalia Festival is an ancient Roman holiday that mainly celebrated the Winter sowing season, as well as honored the god Saturn. The actual dates vary but most scholars agree it was once celebrated between December 17th and the 23rd OR December 25th through the 31st, depending on the calendar that was used. What we know for sure is it that it was observed around Midwinter a.k.a. the Winter Solstice and when the Norse celebrated Yule. Saturnalia is thought to have lasted for up to seven days, this was followed by the celebration of the winter solstice and birth of the the sun god, Sol Invictus, on December 25th , an occasion marked by the city wide chariot races.
History of Saturnalia
Saturnalia started out as a one-day farmers’ festival on 17th December each year. As you might have guessed by the name, the festival was to honor Saturn – the god of farming and the harvest. Over the centuries, the festival grew, eventually becoming a seven-day event culminating on December 23rd with Sigillaria – a day of gift-giving. During this period, Romans celebrated the completion of the planting season and honored Saturn, thanking him for the promise of bountiful harvests to come. The festival brought warmth and light to the darkest days of the year and most of all gratitude to the god of agriculture Saturn.
Saturnalia a time to shake up societal norms
My all time favorite Ancient Roman tradition comes from this festival. One of Saturnalia’s traditions consisted of allowing people to revel in a role reversal of sorts. The social norms on Saturnalia were lifted. Slaves were treated as equals, allowed to wear their masters’ clothing, and be waited on at meal time in remembrance of an earlier golden age thought to have been ushered in by the god. Not only that but, it was a time of participating in indulgences we normally wouldn’t get to partake in like orgies, and cross dressing.
Saturnalia a time of Liberation
Saturnalia was even called a “feast of liberation.” Enslaved people were temporarily liberated. Moral rules were loosened, so activities like gambling , swearing in public and cross dressing were allowed on Saturnalia. The strict city dress code enforced upon all was even lifted meaning no more togas during this festival. Instead bright clothes were worn by all. Allowing others to freely be themselves and express themselves in ways that normally are not allowed giving them liberation they don’t normal get to feel the rest of the year round.
Saturnalia a golden era of abundance
At the heart of Saturnalia was a celebration for Saturn, the god of a the best time for humanity, called the Golden Age. This was a time when everything was plenty and peaceful. It was like a magical time with lots of resources, where everyone got along well, and the earth gave abundance without anyone having to work too hard. This time was full of lots of good things and happiness, and life was easy and free. The time when Saturn was in charge was like the beginning of a world that was full of peace and freedom. This is the time we remember and try to receive from the god Saturn again during Saturnalia.
Saturnalia a time when the veil is thinned
Like their Northern European neighbors who celebrated Yule, the ancient Romans believed the spirits and ghosts from the underworld were active during the Winter season and holidays like Saturnalia. Saturnalia, was a time when the spirits of the dead were honored and the boundaries between social classes were temporarily overturned including those between the living and the dead.
Common Traditions
Saturnalia was generally considered a merry festival, with lots of feasting and exchanging of gifts. Many of the common traditions we see during the winter solstice were seen during this festival as well. In Rome, the holiday was kicked off with a religious ceremony in the Temple of Saturn, followed by a free public banquet open to all. Along with the other common traditions below.
Unbinding of Saturn’s feet
The statue of Saturn’s feet, typically bound the rest of the year, were freed from their bindings during the festival. This symbolized the freedom and liberation of the gods, people, and earth. This was done within the temple of Saturn and by most accounts I can read the priest’s was even allowed to uncover his face.
Drinking, feasting, and revelry
Saturnalia was definitely a time of merriment full of Bacchus level style of partying. Drinks were flowing, bellies were full, and voices of laughter and singing were heard throughout every street. Sources say traditional foods included roast boar, cakes, walnuts, honey, grapes, fermented fish, figs, apples and of course, wine. In addition to the role reversals, large parties were had that involved orgies, fertility rites, gambling, and games of many kinds. cross-dressing was a common tradition and enlivened the atmosphere with joy as well.
Gift giving and gag gifts
Gift-giving, still common during the Winter holiday season today, was incredibly prominent in ancient Rome as a Saturnalia tradition. Gifts were given to children and gag gifts between friends. The gag gifts were called sigillaria and were typically wax dolls and figurines made to resemble gods, mythical heroes, and even grotesque monsters. These were typically sold during a Saturnalia market traditionally held during the holidays. Some believe the figurines are a nod to ancient times when human sacrifices might have been made. I wonder if this is where the roots to the famous gag gifting game, the white elephant game, gets it’s roots from.
The king of Saturnalia
The King of Saturnalia was a man chosen in each household to represent the leader of Saturnalia or Lord of Misrule. The King of Saturnalia would then cause mischief or misrule in the household and more specifically at parties and feasts. By playing pranks, telling jokes, chasing the women, etc. Even having the role creating chaos, by yelling commands that other partygoers had to obey. I consider this tradition as a way to create a character or “spirit” of the season. When I read about this common tradition it gives me a very Loki, causing Mischief kind of feel.
Saturnalia and the god Saturn
Saturn, and his consort Ops (Opis) were both worshiped on Saturnalia. To the Ancient Romans, Saturn wasn’t just the god of karma time and boundaries, but he was also an agricultural god and the ruler of a great Golden Age, a time of abundance and perfect peace. He taught the people about agriculture and how to save their money, so they might never experience hunger or poverty again. He taught them the payout of discipline and restraint. Offerings and sacrifices were made to both the god and his goddess in hopes of protecting the Winter-sown crops. Saturn, also called Father Time and Seed-Sower, is the Roman god of agriculture, prosperity, time and fertility. In one of the myths, Saturn is a haggard wanderer who eventually is given the job of door guardian. Tasked with guarding Rome’s immense wealth. Let’s be honest we all know how much Rome loves their money and gold. Which places him as one of the most important gods to Rome of all, outside of their founders whom we celebrate soon during Lupercalia.
Saturnalia and the goddess Ops
Saturn wasn’t the only deity honored during the days of the Saturnalia Festival but, so was his consort Ops. On, December 19th is Opalia, the feast day of Ops. Ops is the goddess of peace, plenty, and protection. She specifically is invoked to guard one’s home against fires and to extinguish fires that have gone out of control. Interestingly, her name influenced the word opulence, which means great wealth or luxuriousness.
Saturnalia Vs the Winter solstice and Yule
While both Saturnalia and the Winter Solstice happen to be festivals that take place around the same time as each other they are quite different with different core meanings. Saturnalia was a time of revelry and social upheaval in Roman society, characterized by indulgence, merrymaking, and the suspension of norms. In contrast, Yule carried a deep reverence for the natural cycles, focusing on the return of light and the cosmic order. While both Saturnalia and Yule involved feasting and joyful gatherings, their underlying philosophies and significance varied. Yule centered on the sun’s rebirth and spiritual renewal, whereas Saturnalia was more associated with social liberties and honoring Saturn as an agricultural deity.
Themes of Saturnalia
Every season and every pagan holiday has certain concepts and magical themes. Which means, depending on your tradition and needs, you can weave one or more of these themes into your personal celebrations. This festival perform spells to harness the energies of the harvest, abundance, expression, gratitude, liberation, accessing our deepest desires, and merriment. This is also a time to reflect on the past year, but in a way to be present. To truly let go and celebrate the hard work you did during the planting and harvest season. Saturnalia is a time to break down walls, let go of fear, and allow ourselves to express ourselves freely. To no longer let the expectations, and rules of societal norms hold us in shackles anymore. On Saturnalia, we see the following magical rituals and spells below as well. Remember these are just some of the themes and energies you can connect to and work with on Yule.
Merriment
Role reversal
Liberation
Equality
Celebration
Feasting
Drunkenness
Breakthroughs
Expression
Freedom
Abundance
The Harvest
Charity
Community
Agriculture
Wealth
Joy
Winter
Debauchery
Interconnectedness

Saturnalia and Duality
Since, I am a grey witch I look for the duality in every single energy I work with including sacred times like the ancient Roman Festival of Saturnalia. This festival and holiday is time full of merriment, revelry, and honestly down right debauchery. Allowing us to express ourselves freely. For this one time during the year not be bound by societal norms giving us a taste of true authentic freedom. This may make some think this holiday is only about positive and wanted energies. But, that is not the case. To truly be free, to feel full liberation and be present in true debauchery you have to allow yourself to face your repressed feelings, inner shame, and let go of fear and control. You must be willing to let go of all fears and take a massive leap of faith in yourself, your partner, and the community you have made. You have to be willing to remove any masks you have in place so you can be truly present to feel all the pleasure liberation has for you to taste.

Check out below more ways to work with and celebrate this Ancient roman holiday into your holiday season even now!
Switch up the roles in your home
One of the most popular traditions and my personal favorite was the role reversal. So, why not do the same in your life during this festival to honor that as well. Now, you may not be able to do this in your entire life because, it isn’t something that is widely celebrated like it was during ancient times in Rome. But, you can do it in your own home at least. So if you are normally the one managing the home while someone else gets a more laid back role. For these few days switch those roles. Allow each other to understand how the other feels to create more harmony in your home from this day on.
Gambling
During Saturnalia, a time of jovial merrymaking, many social norms were relaxed and inverted. Gambling, normally outlawed, was allowed in public. According to some accounts, you were only supposed to gamble for nuts, not money, to recreate the golden age of Saturn
Abundance and Sharing Celebrations
Host a feast that’s all about gratitude and generosity. Share your blessings with others, perhaps through a community meal where everyone contributes, or by donating to those in need. You can also cast abundance and wealth spells for not only you but, also for others. One of my favorites to do is to make abundance spell bags, or packets and gift them to friends, family members, and even strangers on the street.
Gift giving
Embrace the joy of giving with thoughtful, perhaps handmade, gifts. Acts of kindness, personalized letters, or DIY crafts can be more meaningful than store-bought presents.
Other ways to celebrate
Decorate with Evergreens
Carry On the Saturnalia Tree Tradition
Purification and cleansing Rituals
host a Saturnalia Feast
Dress in bright and lively clothing
add Saturnalia Decorations to your altar
Honor Saturn with prayer and offerings
Work with some chaos magic to cause a little mischief
Designate someone in your home as the king of Saturnalia
Throw a Big Party full of dancing, singing, drinking, and feasting
Shadow work focused on freedom, liberation, and what you view as societal norms holding you back. Study and learn about the history and practices of Saturnalia
While Saturnalia seems to be lost to the ancient past by many, its lessons feel timeless. It teaches us to pause, reflect, and connect—to honor the cycles around us and revel in life’s fleeting joys. The Romans embraced Saturnalia as a way of restoring balance, gaining perspective, and finding unity, whether its by serving another or sharing a warm laugh . Follow your intuition and honor Saturnalia however feels right. That could be through sharing gifts, hosting a festive feast, or simply taking a moment to connect with your loved ones beyond the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Saturnalia reminds us to honor both the light and the shadow, to plant seeds for future harvests, and to bask in the merriment of community. It reminds us of the true freedom and liberation we get to feel when we embrace our authenticity and live outside of societal norms no matter what others feel and think.
Friday the 13th has held our fascination in culture for a long time now, for many it has gotten a bit of an infamous reputation even. Because, most of the beliefs are that this day is unlucky. While that is the case in some cultures and practices it’s not the case for all. For many, we see that by bringing the beautiful and loving energies of Friday and the transformative and whole energies of the number 13 together, Friday the 13th is in fact, a very powerful day. A day for feminine energy, manifestation, and creativity. We see the magic of this day and it’s energy mirrored in the 13 lunar cycles of the year and in the blood women shed each month. It is also an extremely powerful time of death and rebirth as it represents that mid-point in the cycle between something new emerging and something old slipping away. Friday the 13th is a day that invites us to explore the depths of our soul and embrace our spiritual journey. Join me under the night sky as you speak to the moon, to learn all about the magic you can harness on this mysterious and mystical day instead of being afraid.
History and legends of Friday the 13th as unlucky
To truly understand the significance of Friday the 13th, we need to delve into its historical origins, explore its spiritual interpretations, and unravel the common beliefs and myths associated with it. The number 13 has a long and intriguing history, steeped in superstition and lore. Its reputation as an unlucky number can be traced back to various ancient civilizations and cultural beliefs. In fact, fear of the number 13 even has a specific name: triskaidekaphobia. The fear of the number 13 is so strong that it has influenced architecture and design. Many buildings and hotels skip the thirteenth floor entirely, jumping from the twelfth to the fourteenth floor in a practice known as; “floor numbering avoidance.” Let’s take a look at some of the myths that have lead to this deep seated fear and feeling of being unlucky.
First up an example of this day being unlucky and it comes from Norse mythology. From what I can find this may even be the oldest one. There was a dinner party being held in Valhalla amongst the gods for all, but one. The trickster god loki was not invited. When he heard of this he decided to attend anyways as the 13th guest of the party. Than during the party he convinced Höðr to shoot Balder with a mistletoe-tipped arrow killing him. Thus marking this day as unlucky.
Next up, we look at Christianity where we see the number 13th portrayed again as being unlucky. This comes up in the story of the last supper when the one who betrayed Jesus was the 13th guest; Judas. Not only that, according to Christian tradition, Jesus was crucified on a Friday, which has led some to view the day as a symbol of suffering and sorrow adding more bad luck to this day for some. We see it again in history with Christianity and the knights templar as well. Many even trace the origins of Friday the 13th superstitions back to the day they were arrested. Which was on Friday, October 13, 1307 by French King Philip IV. Most were imprisoned and later executed. This association between the number 13 and betrayal has resonated throughout history and has contributed to the belief that it brings bad luck.
The energies of Friday the 13th
Throughout history, the number 13 has been steeped in mystery and superstition. In numerology, this number is often considered to be symbolic of change, transformation, and spiritual growth. It is believed to possess a powerful energy that can bring about both wanted and unwanted outcomes. Similarly, the day of Friday has its own spiritual connections. In many cultures, Friday is associated with the planet Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. It is seen as a day of romance, creativity, and spiritual connection. When you combine these two energies the ripe fertile energy of manifestation appears. It is said to be a day when the veil between the physical and spiritual realms is thin, allowing for deeper insights, heightened intuition and spiritual awakening.
Friday the 13th; A day of the goddess
Friday the 13th is not only seen as an unlucky day, but a day of deep beauty and fertility. Before patriarchal times, Friday the 13th was considered the day of the Goddess. It was considered a day to honor the Divine Feminine that lives in us all and to honor the cycles of creation and death and rebirth. With it being the day of the Goddess it is a beautiful day for creating and celebrating life. It is a lovely day for getting in tune with your emotions, sensitivities, and giving thanks to the beautiful Goddess that lives in us all. All this fertile divine feminine energy makes Friday the 13th, a very powerful day to manifest, honor creativity, and to celebrate beauty, wisdom, and nourishment of the soul.
Friday the 13th; manifestation and spiritual awakening
Friday the 13th is a very fertile day for setting intentions, visualizing goals, and engaging in rituals to bring about positive change in our lives. the combination of Friday, associated with Venus, the planet of love and abundance, and the number 13, which is associated with transformation and rebirth, creates a potent energy for manifesting desires and intentions. The alignment of these cosmic energies amplifies our ability to attract what we desire and manifest our dreams into reality.
Friday the 13th is also seen as an opportunity for deep introspection, self-reflection, spiritual awakening, and personal growth. Friday the 13th is seen as a time to delve into one’s inner world and confront any emotional or spiritual challenges that may be hindering our personal growth. It is believed that by embracing this day and its energies, we can embark on a journey of self-discovery and transformation, shedding old patterns and beliefs that no longer serve us.
Friday the 13th and duality
Since, I am a grey witch I look for the duality in every single energy I work with including sacred times like Friday the 13th. Man does, this day have so much duality to it and honestly I hope I have made it obvious at this point throughout this post even. While most people think of Friday the 13th as something to be fearful of as a day full of bad luck, dreadful omens, and misfortune. It’s also a time that is fertile with beautiful and loving energy to guide you towards spiritual awakening and manifestation with creativity. You can’t get much more dualistic in energy then that. Plus this day is also connected to a very liminal pocket of time and energy. It’s a time of death and rebirth, representing the midpoint between something new and something old.

Ways to work with the energy of Friday the 13th
As witches, we can associate a lot of great, and magical, things with Friday the 13th. Friday is ruled by Venus, the planet of love, harmony, and money. It’s a good day for self-care, self-love, and to make for some great Venusian-style hedonism. When it comes to this mysterious, mystical, and fertile day there are countless ways to work with it. I will go over some below.
Shadow work
One of my favorite ways to work with this energy is to tap into the very fertile energies prime for personal growth and spiritual awakening on this day is through shadow work. Shadow work on this day is profound leading us to places inside ourselves to release blockages to create a life we have always wanted to manifest. Guiding us to the inner goddess within the creative energy swirling in our womb space. If you would like to learn more about shadow work you can purchase my eBook here; you can book me for a 1:1 session as your guide here; and you can watch my free class previously taught on it through Divination here.
Sex Magic Own your sexuality! Use your orgasms to set intentions. As you pleasure yourself or consensually with a partner, think of a goal that you want to achieve and attain. While climaxing, state the intention over and over. Being that sex and orgasms are full of fertile manifestation energy, you can make your visions true by manifesting them this way into your life. On top of that it adds a very intimate and magical layer to your sex life and relationship. To learn more about sex magic you can watch my class with Divination Academy on YouTube here.
Harness the bad luck for protection magic
A reality we all have to face in life is that from time to time we will need protection from energies that come our way. Whether it be from a thing, place, or person in our life. So, why not work with the unlucky energy that exists within this day to help you do that. This is one of my favorite ways to work with this day! Taking bad luck, harnessing it, and directing it towards others to protect you can really put a damper on others day. Plus you can get pretty creative with your hexes and curses you cast that are anchored in the energy of bad luck and misfortune. You can make them as elaborate or as simples as you want as well! From writing their name on a piece of toilet paper, then taking it and flushing it down the toilet to flush away all of their good luck and bring only bad luck from this day on. You can cast hexes to just annoy them throughout the day as well; like having one of their shoes never being able to stay tied, or losing sight of their phone every time they set it down. The last way I like to work with this bad luck energy is using it in my protection spells as an amplifier by using its energy in things like bad luck charms and spell bags. Or even weaving it’s energy into my reflective shield causing bad luck and misfortune to befall anyone who sends unwanted energy my way.

Friday the 13th manifestation spell
Use this spell I created below with me today, to manifest 13 of your deepest wishes and dreams with the divine feminine and the energy of 13!
This spell is meant to use the ripe and fertility energy of Friday the 13th to manifest your wishes and dreams. What you will need is a cauldron or fire safe bowl, a marker, a white candle and 13 bay leaves.
When you are ready to begin get yourself into sacred container by visualizing white, warm, feminine energy surrounding you. Once you feel anchored in your container focus on 13 things you want in your life right now and focus on them clearly with every detail in your minds eye. Then take your 13 bay leaves and write one manifestation/wish on each bay leaf as you visualize it being in your life. Once done focus on the energy and number of 13 and light your candle sitting within the cauldron or bowl. Next, focus on the flame and as you burn each bay leave in the flame releasing your wish to the multiverse say. “ By the power of 13, my wishes I burn. By the power of 13 all my dreams come to me.”
