A week of simmer pots; fill your home with magic every day of the week

I love simmer pots! They are one of my favorite spells to do! They are magical spells to create an enchanted energetic container within your home. The essence of your spell is able to be carried to every single nook and cranny of your home. This is the main reason I love them so much! Our homes are so important to imbue with our magical energy and the essence of the intention we want to create in our life. Because, they are our home base, our safe zone, and one of most sacred temples we retreat to. We use them to build our families, create connections with the divine , and perform our magic in. They are also simple to create and cast and incredibly versatile. You can make them for endless intentions and energies it just depends what type of magical atmosphere you want to bring into your home. Because, I love them so much and have created so many of them throughout the years I have decided to create this post to give you a week of simmer pots to imbue magic into your own home!

What are simmer pots?

Simmer pots are basically potpourri in a pot! You choose your ingredients, put them in a pot with water, bring to a boil, then turn down to a simmer and let it do its thing. They couldn’t be any easier, just be sure you don’t let your pot boil dry! If you want to keep the pot going simply add more water when it gets low. And obviously never leave it going when you are not home. Simmer pots also lack the harsh toxins that are packed into conventional air freshener sprays and many scented candles. Just fresh ingredients from your kitchen! No fake fragrances or toxic chemicals needed. One more benefit, they can likely be crafted with things you already have in your kitchen making them a convenient and inexpensive solution. If you want to learn more about simmer pots and learn how to create your own check out my guide HERE!

What makes a simmer pot magical?

Aside from making your house smell divine, one of the ways simmer pots are magical is they incorporate all of the natural elements – making it a fun way to bring a connection with nature and the environment to your home. You do this simply by creating it.

  • EARTH-The first step to creating a simmer pot is to choose the herbs, spices, plants and other foods that will go into your concoction
  • WATER-Once you’ve put all of your botanical ingredients in the pot, you will fill the pot 2/3 with water.
  • FIRE/HEAT-The fire element is added when you turn on your stove top burner and start heating up your simmer pot. You’ll want to bring it to gentle simmer
  • AIR-The steam from your simmer pot will circulate the scent and magic of your simmer pot throughout your space. And sending the energy of your spell, intention, manifestation, or ritual into the air, your sacred space and the multiverse.

This is my favorite part and why I find them so magical. The amount of magical energy being released into your space out into the multiverse and than inhaled back into your soul through your lungs is astounding and intoxicating. Simmer pots also leverage the magical and mysterious properties of herbs and other plants making it great way to practice kitchen witchcraft even if cooking or baking isn’t really your thing. They are often kept in a sacred space or carried around for ongoing magical support. Spell jars can have numerous purposes: protective, attracting, banishing, and cursing. Saturday is ruled by the planet Saturn which makes a great day to do any spells associated with boundaries and protection! One type of spell you can do is a freezer spell. The freezer spell for enemies serves as a means of protection. Furthermore, a self-defense against individuals who may wish harm or ill-will upon you. Whether dealing with a personal rival, a workplace adversary, or even a malevolent force, this spell jar can help create a barrier between you and the unwanted they represent and bring into your life. By literally “putting them on ice,” you regain a sense of control and agency over your circumstances.

How to perform:
Get into sacred space. On a piece of paper, write the name of your enemy or a brief description of the situation you wish to freeze. Place the paper inside the container wrapped around one of the lemon halves, along with the basil, garlic, and pepper flakes. Visualize your desired outcome as you do so, focusing on the sense of liberation and protection you seek. Fill the container with water, covering the contents completely. As you do, envision the unwanted person or issue being sealed away and rendered powerless. visualize them or it being literally frozen in its tracks. Seal the container tightly and place it in the freezer. Come back to the spell once a week to charge it.
Happy Casting!

Ps. If you need to learn more about how to cast a freezer spell jar in general I do go over it more in depth in this blogpost.

Let them see mirror spell

Have you been having an issue with someone in your life causing you harm or pain? Do they not even seem to see the pain they cause you and how it affects you every single day? Why not take matters into your own hand and a hold mirror up to their face and make them see the error of their ways? The let them see spell I created below will do just that! It combines the energy of mirror magic and its reflective properties to simply let them see themselves plus it helps speed up their own karma coming their way. I recommend casting this on Saturday to grab on to the karmic energy of Saturn who rules the energy of that day.

What is Karma?

Before we get into the spell I want you to understand the components of the spell and energies you are working with. First up what is Karma? Karma is the Sanskrit word for action. Karma is a belief that a person’s actions have consequences, which may return to them in this life or in the future. It’s a concept that’s central to many religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism It is equivalent to Newton’s law of “˜every action must have a reaction’. When we think, speak or act we initiate a force that will react accordingly. This returning force maybe modified, changed or suspended, but most people will not be able destroy it or break free from it. This law of cause and effect is not punishment, but is wholly for the sake of education or learning. For the sake of our growth through experience on our path to awakening in enlightenment.

Laws of Karma

The Great Law- “As you sow, so shall you reap.”
The Law of Creation- Life doesn’t just happen. It requires our participation.
The Law of Humility- You can’t change something if you refuse to accept it.
The Law of Growth- “Wherever you go, there you are.”
The Law of Responsibility- Whenever there is something wrong in my life, there is something wrong in me.
The Law of Connection- Even if something we do seems inconsequential, it is very important that it gets done as everything in the Universe is connected.
The Law of Focus- You cannot think of two things at the same time.
The Law of Giving and Hospitality- If you believe something to be true, then sometime in your life you will be called upon to demonstrate that particular truth.
The Law of Here and Now- Looking backward to examine what was or forward to worry about the future prevents us from being totally in the here and now.
The Law of Change-History repeats itself until we learn the lessons that we need to change our path.
The Law of Patience and Reward- All rewards require initial toil.
The Law of Significance and Inspiration- You get back from something whatever you have put into it.

What is mirror magic and why work with mirrors?

Mirror Magic, an ancient practice intertwined with the essence of self-discovery and empowerment, serves as a gateway to understanding our innermost selves. Mirrors are powerful tools allowing you to step into the realms of magic and spirituality. Using them in mirror spells offers a profound opportunity to connect with one’s own essence and claim space in the world. Mirrors are both simple and complicated tools of magic. Through the ages, they have been used for scrying, searching for the truth, finding your personal unknown – and as portals. They have been also used in protection spells to reflect unwanted energy back to its sender. Which is the way we will be using mirrors in this spell. I love it because, it is not only a shield to alert you to attacks and unwarted energy attachments but, also as a proactive attack by sending the energy back to them.

Always consider the ethics before you hex

Since, we are talking about doing a bit of baneful magic by using a hex we have to talk about ethics a bit. You have some who practice and say to never do such a thing. To never curse or hex. Some who quote a threefold law from the wiccan RELIGION at you for why it is wrong. If that is you that is fine but, this hex spell isn’t for you. If this isn’t you and you understand that in order to heal we must also know how hex. If you have weighed the ethics, and potential unintended consequences and still feel it is the right thing to do. Then this hex spell is for you. Just I ask that you make sure to take the time and before any spell you cast but, especially the baneful ones you have considered all possible perceptions and possible consequences. You have done a pros and cons and made sure it’s something that is ethically aligned with you.

What you will need:

All you will need is a piece of paper, some tape, a pen, a black candle for protection, and a white candle for opening the eyes of the person doing you harm. For added potency you can carve protection sigils into each candle along with your name on the black candle and the person causing you harm on the white candle.

How to cast this spell:
Take a piece of paper and write the name of the person causing you harm and a list of all the wrongs they have done to you and their effects. Then take the paper and tape it with the writing facing the mirror. Light a white and black candle in front of you. Then while holding the mirror, recite “ mirror, mirror, let them see all the wrong they have done me. Open their eyes and open their hearts to finally see the pain they have caused me clearly.”

Happy casting everyone! Let those who harm you no longer be able to hide from the pain and harm they have caused you. If you want to expand your magical knowledge more check out my guide below!

Banish Debt Freezer jar spell

In this day and age it’s almost impossible to not have some kind of financial debt out there. So, why not use your magic to help alleviate some of that. This banish debt freezer spell jar I created a few years back is a great way to do that. The last time I used this spell, a few weeks later I got a letter in the mail telling me a lawsuit had been filed against the company that had won and my debt was included in that and it was now gone and forgiven.

I know most people use freezer jar spells on people but, that’s the beauty of magic we can adjust them to create something different. So, why not apply them to situations we want to freeze out of our lives as well like debt?
Another thing to note is most use freezer spells to pause a situation and as temporary bindings. Meaning they don’t usually do freezer spells that are intended for extended periods of time. It’s typically used as a way to place a temporary boundary, giving you the time to address the issue without the immediate pressure or doing magic that could be permanent. But, remember magic and your freezer spell will follow the intention and energy YOU set and direct it with. Which is how I created this lovely gem!

What is a freezer jar spell?

Before we get into the spell and how to do it let’s make sue you understand the basics of a freezer jar spell. I love freezer jar spells because, they are an extremely effective form of magic and they work very quickly. Freezer spells are great for multiple intentions including bindings, to “pause” or put a situation on hold, to bring peace or even freeze a person in their tracks. A freezer spell is exactly what it sounds like it is. It is a spell that utilizes the freezer in your home to freeze your intended target or situation in a vessel.

Keep in mind some may tell you they are considered a closed practice. I obviously don’t agree with this since they are part of my practice. I don’t see why if I have access to a freezer or a way to freeze things like the below freezing weather Minnesota is in now, I can’t use it. It is going to be up to you to decide how you feel about it. Keep in mind there are some freezer spells that utilize techniques from the Hoodoo folk magic tradition including sour and sweetening jars. If you want to stay away from maybe appropriating, simply leave those ingredients and methods out of your personal freezer magic and spells.

There are so many different intentions you can do for freezer spell jars too!

  • My most commonly used one is to bind a person in place and remove them from my life. It’s another layer to add when you are chord cutting. I really like to use these on narcists and toxic relationships.
  • Pause or slow down a situation to get more time to think
  • Remove a harmful situation from your life
  • A means to get justice for yourself
  • preserve love and friendship
  • To preserve a job opportunity or salary
  • To stop time from moving too fast
  • Preserve one’s health
  • promotes stillness and mindfulness
  • Promote Self Control and discipline
  • Remove a bad habit or addiction from your life
  • Cooling a “hot” situation off
  • Create one as an offering to be placed on an altar for a winter goddess like Cailleach

The ethical debate of freezer jar spells

Just like with every other baneful type of magic before you cast this one you have to sit with the ethics and morals of them. Some people will say to not work with freezer spells because of the binding factor to them. Some consider them to be taking the free will away from others. Some just think its wrong and not something you should do like cut someone out of your life. Others like myself, have no problem with them. We understand that our magic is perfectly fine to be used to protect ourselves. Especially if we’ve done everything we can in the physical realm, but still feel threatened, we have the magical realm to help us. So, just sit with it and decide for you what you think and how you feel about them. I won’t tell you one or or the other. It s up to you.

So, what will you need?

  • A jar or bottle that can be frozen
  • rice
  • lemon slices
  • cayenne pepper
  • 3 coins
  • salt
  • Water
  • A paper with the written amount of debt on it and/or the debt collectors name

How to perform this spell

I recommend casting this spell today (Thursday) since it is Jupiter’s day and tied to money matters or on Saturday which is ruled by the planet of boundaries Saturn.

  • As always once you gather your ingredients and cleanse them get yourself into sacred container however you like to do so.
  • Once you are there focus on the energy of money, the amount of debt you are in, and the affects it has been having on your life.
  • Then take your ingredients representing that money and debt and place it into the jar; this would be your rice, cinnamon powder, and 3 coins.
  • Next, take a deep breath and now focusing on visualizing that debt being frozen in your life. What that would like and feel like. The affects it would have.
  • Once that image is set in your mind’s eye, take your ingredients used to bind, banish, and protect and add them to the jar. This would be your lemon slices, salt, and cayenne pepper.
  • With all your ingredients now inside your jar, take the piece of paper with the debt amount and/or the debt collectors name on it and hold it your hands while you say;
  • ” This slip of paper is the (amount of debt) owed to (name of collector) may this spell freeze it from affecting my life in an unwanted way from this day on. As I will it so mote it be.”
  • Then fill the jar to the top with water, seal the lid, and place it in freezer.
  • Watch as the debt is frozen from your life.

For some added potency if the amount is quite large consider adding binding sigils to your jar or burning a black candle as you create this freezer spell jar.

Let them feel their own karma mirror hex

As much as we want life to be easy, with no bumps in the road and we are only around pleasant human beings. We all know that simply just isn’t reality. Sometimes in life we have no choice but, to get out our swords and fight back with a bit of baneful magic against those who have been causing us pain and harm. This could be anyone from a coworker who has been toxic as hell in the workplace you wish you could slap in the face but, can’t. To the family member who has been insulting you, tearing you down, or making fun of your way of life. To the friend who gaslights you and makes you feel small.

I find one of the best ways to get back at someone and protect myself is to just let their own wicked actions, nasty bullshit energy, and unrelenting karma bounce back to them and do its work. One of the many ways we can use our own energy and magic to speed this up and amplify it a bit is by using own of my favorite magical tools a mirror to cast a karma mirror spell.

A karma mirror spell is a spell that uses a mirror to reflect back to a person what they have done to others. The idea is that karma works like a mirror, returning what a person has put out into the world. Which means when we combine the two we create a very potent portal to both amplify and accelerate someone’s karma.

What is Karma?

  • The Great Law- “As you sow, so shall you reap.”
  • The Law of Creation- Life doesn’t just happen. It requires our participation.
  • The Law of Humility- You can’t change something if you refuse to accept it.
  • The Law of Growth- “Wherever you go, there you are.”
  • The Law of Responsibility- Whenever there is something wrong in my life, there is something wrong in me.
  • The Law of Connection- Even if something we do seems inconsequential, it is very important that it gets done as everything in the Universe is connected.
  • The Law of Focus- You cannot think of two things at the same time.
  • The Law of Giving and Hospitality- If you believe something to be true, then sometime in your life you will be called upon to demonstrate that particular truth.
  • The Law of Here and Now- Looking backward to examine what was or forward to worry about the future prevents us from being totally in the here and now.
  • The Law of Change-History repeats itself until we learn the lessons that we need to change our path.
  • The Law of Patience and Reward- All rewards require initial toil.
  • The Law of Significance and Inspiration- You get back from something whatever you have put into it.

Try out my Let them feel their own karma hex below today!

Grab a black candle and carve the person’s name and DOB who needs to feel their own karma. Then take the candle and place it on top of a mirror. This allows their nasty bullshit wicked energy to bounce back. Once the candle is on the mirror light the candle and recite “ mirror to see, mirror to know may the karma of your wicked actions become known.”

Let the candle burn as long as it needs to until it goes out. Then leave it on the mirror and place it on your altar.
Come back to it and relight the candle and repeat this spell for 6 days or nights. Watch as your target starts to have their karma, nasty bullshit energy, and wicked actions bring them confrontation and everything they deserve to happen for the harm they have brought to you.

Happy hexing witches!
I’m proud of you for choosing to pick up a sword and protect yourself. To further your magical research and add some more spells and rituals to your own grimoire check out my guides below!

Working with the energy of the Snake

Snakes aka Serpents are beautiful creatures, that face the world in defiance of those who fear them. Slithering their way into our lives with transmutation, magic, and allure. Snakes tap into the deepest parts of us, the things we fear yet cannot look away from. Carl Jung even suggested that snakes are archetypal symbols representing the wild and mysterious parts of your psyche. They can surface in your dreams as messengers from the collective unconscious, linking you to the shared human experience and evoking primordial emotions or instincts. But, don’t forget when it comes to snake symbolism, there are various different interpretations. In some cultures, snakes or serpents are seen as helpful creatures that can guide us on our journey through life. In others, they’re considered to be malevolent, dangerous, and in some cases the source of all evil. The snake’s ability to move between underground and aboveground worlds has led to beliefs that it is a creature that can navigate between the physical and spiritual realms. Come with me on a journey through the realms, history, and time as we slither with the snake in this blogpost to shed our skins together by the end of it.

What are snakes?

Before, we really slither into the depths of what Snakes can symbolize and mean let’s first talk about what they even really are. Snakes are cold-blooded reptiles with elongated bodies, no limbs, and overlapping scales. As reptiles, they’re cold blooded and must regulate their body temperature externally. Snakes are predators and eat a wide variety of animals, including rodents, insects, birds’ eggs and even live young birds. They can be found in many different habitats, including forests, deserts, grasslands, swamps, and oceans. Which means they are found across the world.

Fun facts about snakes

  • Snakes have no eyelids, so they cannot blink.
  • Snakes come in many sizes and can range from 10 cm to over 10 meters in length.
  • A snake has a set of hollow fangs at the front end of its upper jaw for delivering venom into their prey.
  • The scales covering a snake’s body help them move smoothly over rough surfaces and through water without much resistance or friction
  • Snakes will shed their skin several times per year throughout their life once they reach adulthood.
  • Venomous snakes use venom to kill prey or defend themselves against predators, while non-venomous snakes depend only on constriction to catch food or protect themselves.
  • There are more than 3,400 species of snakes found on every continent except Antarctica.
  • All snakes are carnivores, eating small animals such as insects, birds, eggs, or other reptiles like lizards and turtles.
  • The color patterning on a snake’s skin is related to camouflage so that it can blend with its environment
  • Most snakes lay eggs, while there are some species that give birth to live young, which hatch out of the egg inside the mother’s body.

The Year of the Snake

The 2025 Chinese new year celebrated alongside the lunar new year that falls on January 29th is the reason I am writing this post. The Chinese new year marking the end of winter and the beginning of the spring season, celebrates looking to the future for new beginnings with themes of happiness, health family, and good fortune. This Chinese new year marks the arrival of the Wood Snake, a rare and meaningful combination that appears only once every 60 years. This year of the Snake signifies introspection, subtle power, and transformative growth. It embodies a quiet yet potent and sometimes lethal energy capable of illuminating hidden paths and fostering deep emotional and spiritual understanding. Its strategic, resourceful nature makes it an excellent year for long-term growth. To learn more about the Chinese new year and how to work with the snake during this celebration you can read my guide here.

The power of transformation through shedding skins

The constant shedding and regrowth of the snake’s skin naturally represents transformative states and experience. There’s a sense of profound respect for the snake’s ability to shed its old skin and begin anew, which often translates into new beginnings for you in the waking world. They advocate for the letting go of outdated beliefs to acquire deeper understanding. Just as a snake sheds its skin, you’re encouraged to shed parts of your identity that no longer serve you, making room for an identity shift that aligns with who you’re becoming. This process isn’t merely about changing habits or altering your external situation; it’s a profound transformation that starts from within. It asks you to look deep into your core, question long-held beliefs, and courageously let go of the old to embrace the new. This isn’t easy. Just as a snake exposes itself to vulnerability during its shedding process, you too might feel exposed or uncertain as you navigate your path of renewal. Yet, this is where your greatest growth occurs. Each layer you shed reveals a stronger, more authentic version of yourself.

The venomous strike of protection

Snakes serve as guardians, protecting sacred spaces, yet also represent temptation, challenging your moral compass. They’re not just creatures slithering on the ground with a venomous bite; they’re powerful symbols of safeguarding what’s precious and standing firm against adversity. Some snakes, like cobras and rattlesnakes, will defend their territory when threatened by attacking with a single lethal strike. Reminding us that it’s okay for us to strike back against those who wrong us and protect what is ours when we wait to strike with precision.

The healing medicine of snakes

Throughout history, snakes haven’t only been revered as symbols of transformation but, also as powerful emblems of healing and medicine, offering profound insights into physical and spiritual wellness. Our spinal cord is said to be the physical manifestation of our Kundalini energy even, wrapping around us like a snake. When we awaken this energy, we align and heal ourselves. Not only are they symbols of healing they even physically contribute to our medicine with their venom contributing to both ancient medicinal practices and to many of our modern medicines. Further more we see the snake and its tie to medicine in myth as well. The Rod of Asclepius (aka The Staff of Asclepius) is a snake-entwined rod, said to be wielded by Asclepius, the Greek god associated with healing and medicine.

The snake and the divine feminine

Their phallic shape and dynamic movement have long been associated with sexual energy and potency, which are fundamental aspects of fertility. The smooth, ethereal movements of the snake evoke the image of ancient dance rituals and feminine movement. They remind us that embracing your sexual nature can be a powerful source of creative energy. The snake also represents Kundalini energy, the sexual, powerful, and demonstrative of the sacred feminine consciousness. The snake is one of the most primordial symbols of feminine strength, mirroring the profound essence of life itself.

Snakes in myths and lore

Throughout history, you’ll find that snakes have slithered their way through various religious texts and mythological stories. In many cultures, the snake is seen as a powerful animal that can take on different forms and meanings. The symbolism of the snake is multifaceted. It can personify both masculine (like when they are Satan) and feminine energy, life and death, destruction and resurrection. Snakes represent light and darkness, good and evil, wisdom and blind passion, cure and poison, guardian and destroyer, spiritual and physical rebirth. Let’s talk about some of the myths and lore about snakes and serpents below.

ouroboros

First up, what I would say is the most commonly found symbol of the snake across cultures. The image of a snake eating its tail, called the ouroboros, appears in many different cultures from ancient Greek, ancient Egypt, and even the Norse. Where a mythological creature, named Jörmungandr, symbolizing this symbol plays a crucial role in ragnorak as one of Loki’s children. These different ancient peoples considered the snake a perfect representation of the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. It symbolizes the intrinsic integration of everything in the universe and the infinite cycles of destruction and recreation. This endless symbol whispers tales of continuous renewal and the infinite nature of the universe’s cycle.

Typhon

Next up, Typhon was a monstrous giant snake-like creature of ancient Greek mythology who fathered many monsters with his mate Echidna. He is often depicted as a massive, serpent-like being with multiple heads. Typhon is described by Hesiod as a fearful beast with strong hands and feet and 100 fiery snakeheads, each bellowing in the language of a different sort of beast. Other descriptions give him snakelike coils instead of feet and some say he was winged. In Greek mythology, Typhon was the offspring of Gaia (the Earth) and Tartarus (the underworld), making him one hell of a formidable opponent. He and his mate Echidna are named the parents of many monsters including Cerberus, Orthrus, the Lernaean Hydra, Chimera, the Caucasian Eagle, Ladon, the Sphinx, the Nemean Lion, the Crommyonian Sow, the Colchian Dragon, Scylla, Gorgon, the Harpies, and various sea serpents. In the most popularly known myth about him. Typhon challenged Zeus’s rule and Zeus defeated him with thunderbolts, burning his many heads and casting him down into Tartarus, scorching and melting huge areas of the Earth in the process. The exact spot this happened is said to have buried him directly beneath Mount Etna, explaining the volcanic activity in the area.

Hydra

Next up is a creature you’ve seen before if you have seen Disney’s Hercules. In Greek mythology, the Hydra is a monstrous, serpent-like creature with multiple heads, most commonly depicted with nine. It was an offspring of Typhon and Echidna bred by Hera to kill Hercules. Hydra lived in the swamps of Lerna, near Argos; its most defining feature is that for every head cut off, two new ones would grow back, making it nearly impossible to kill, and one of its heads was considered immortal; the hero Hercules was tasked with slaying the Hydra as one of his twelve labors, where he managed to defeat it by having his nephew cauterize the wounds as he cut off the heads, allowing him to eventually sever the immortal head and bury it under a rock.

The serpent in the garden of Eden

Of course Christianity has it’s own representation of the snake and serpent as well. In most versions of the Bible, snakes are often associated with evil and temptation. In the book of Genesis, a serpent tempts Eve to eat from the forbidden fruit of knowledge. This fruit was from the one tree in the garden God had forbade her to eat from. The serpent tells her that “when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” She grabs the fruit and eats it, then she knows all that God knows. This entire decision leads to Adam and Eve’s expulsion from the garden of Eden forever. Depending on how you view this story and which version of the bible you read, this is why the snake is seen as evil because, they were the one who caused humans to be expelled from paradise and removed from God. Some even believe the snake was Satan himself. Now, if you look at this story from a gnostic view and from older version of the story, the serpent liberated Eve by giving her freedom to make her own choice. To stay in the garden protected by god but, ignorant of knowledge. Or to take that bite, gain knowledge and leave the only place she had known. Never to see it again. The Snake is also seen again in Jesus’ story of salvation, where it represents Satan tempting Jesus in the wilderness. In Christianity, there is a widespread belief that the snake symbolizes evil, sin, and temptation.

Kundalini

Have you heard of Kundalini energy before? Well that energy is a snake as well. Kundalini in tantric tradition is represented by the serpent. Kundalini energy is even called “serpentine power”, it is a symbol of inner strength, psychic energy, it represents our infinite potential of being. Kundalini is said to be one of the most powerful, primal energy that represents the unmanifested potential within us. Kundalini is the feminine, creative, evolutionary force of infinite wisdom that lives inside every single one of us. In most depictions it is represented as a snake coiled three and a half times around, where in most of us it lies dormant at the base of the spine. I say most of us because that energy remains dormant at the base of the spine, until it is awakened. Kundalini lives in the energetic body, along with the chakras and the nadis. If you want to learn more about your energetic body and how to work with Kundalini energy you can read my guide here. OR head to the shop and book me for a womb healing session.

Lares

The Romans believed in household guardian spirits they called Lares. Lares were often illustrated in snake-form. They not only protected homes, they protected the barriers between the physical and spiritual worlds. They were believed to influence people and events. The Lares may have evolved from the practice of burying family members inside the home even.

Nāgas
The Nagas is a race of large serpentine creatures that can often be found in the mythologies of Hinduism and Buddhism. They are described as powerful, splendid, wonderful and proud semi divine creatures. Nagas are potentially dangerous but more often then not are beneficial to humans. Perhaps the most famous naga in the Hindu tradition is Shesha, who is often portrayed along with Vishnu. The Hindhu god Brahma was said to have banished the naga to their underground kingdom when they became too populous on Earth. Their domain is in the enchanted underworld called Naga-loka filled with gems, gold and other treasures.

In Buddhism, nagas were often depicted as protectors of Siddhārtha Gautama, the Buddha, and the dharma (Buddhist teachings). Of the many naga mentioned in the Buddhist scriptures, one particularly famous one was Mucalinda, a naga king who spread his great cobra hood to shelter the Buddha from a storm that arrived while the prophet was deep in meditation.

Other beliefs about snakes

In the Jewish faith, snakes have traditionally been seen as a symbol of evil and destruction. In the Torah, God sends a plague of serpents to punish the Israelites for their disobedience. The meaning of snakes in Judaism has also been associated with healing. According to Jewish tradition, when Moses raised his staff, it became a snake, this represented a miraculous power of transformation, representing God’s gift of healing.

The druids believed serpents were primordial beings with an ancient knowledge and wisdom of the earth. They taught snakes visited the subterranean realms of the deities and ancestral spirits in the Otherworld during their winter hibernation. The return of snakes in the warmth of spring brought a blessed connection between mortals and the chthonic gods and goddesses. Serpents were the sacred creatures of the deities in the mortal realm.

Snakes differ in symbolism depending on the Native American tribe, where each tribe has its own set of beliefs. The Cherokee fear snakes but associate them with power, believing snakes should never be killed while steering clear of them. Similarly, Lakota Sioux and Blackfoot cultures tell of a serpent named Unhcegila, whose slime caused flesh to rot. But in Hopi culture, snakes symbolize the earth, where all living beings are connected to each other, as well as the planet. Snakes are also symbols of fertility and health in Pueblo and Ojibwa cultures, who also view snakes as healers.

Gods and Goddesses associated with snakes

Snakes not only have slithered their way into countless myths as animals and guides with humans. But, they are often found as symbols associated with many gods and goddesses and at times even companions that help aid the deity in many beneficial ways. Not only that some deities even appear as snake themselves. Let’s take a look at some but, certainly not all of the deities that can be associated with snakes or serpents. Don’t forget you can then use the snake as a correspondence d to work with these deities.

Medusa

First up, we have who I would argue is the most famous deity of them all associated with snakes outside of Satan. The legend of Medusa is well-known in Greek mythology. It tells of a beautiful woman transformed into a gorgon: who some would consider to be a hideous monster with venomous serpents for hair. She is feared by many, especially men. This is because, she is incredibly misunderstood. Due to the fact that most of her myth and story isn’t commonly told and her tragic beginning many have tried to have lost in the waters of time. The truth behind the myth of Medusa doesn’t start with Perseus. It doesn’t even start with Medusa being cursed by Athena. It starts long before that, with the god of the sea Poseidon.

Because of her story many pagans and witches, especially women chose to work with her as a goddess. She’s a powerful symbol of transformation. Transformation of anger and pain into passion and drive, accountability for oneself and growing from it. Seeing ourselves for who we truly are at our core, and approaching your obstacles and challenges with ferocity. Her name says it all; “Medusa” means “guardian, or protectress”. As a Gorgon, Medusa also represents a primordial force of chaos and destruction, embodying the untamed and unpredictable aspects of the natural world. Her petrifying gaze can be interpreted as a reminder of the inherent danger and potential for devastation that exists within the natural order. She uses it to protect others, especially women. And to show others their true nature; if they choose to take from another something they have no right to take. Let go of your fear about her and come with me to stare into the slithering snakes upon her head to learn the truth about her myth, how she is much more than a monster but, a goddess who was demonized, and how to work with her in my guide here.

Quetzalcoatl
Among the most prominent deities in Mesoamerican cultures, there was Quetzalcoatl, or “Feathered Serpent,” who was a mix of bird and rattlesnake (coatl is the Nahuatl word for serpent). He is seen in both Mayan and Aztec culture as a deity of many things including rain, wind, wild animals, harvests, and creation. Not only that he is said to be the god responsible for bringing the people their knowledge of science, writing, creating books, and the creation of the calendar. Although he is the god of many things, Quetzalcoatl was sometimes portrayed as a trickster god, and while his plans did not always work as intended, they did consistently benefit humanity. Which may be why he was often referred to as the morning star. He represents creation, life, knowledge, and the dualities of existence.

Since, he plays such a crucial role in Mesoamerican history there are more myths about him then I could ever cover. In each one he plays a slightly different role and represent a slightly different aspect depending on the region of Mesoamerica you are in . Below are a few I picked to talk about this vital serpent god of Mesoamerica. First up the creation myth story of this cycle of humanity told by the Aztecs. Together, Quetzalcoatl and Xolotl created the current race of humans by descending into the underworld, Mictlan to gather the bones of the former race of humans, destroyed by disaster, and brought them to Cihuacoatl who ground them into flour. The brothers then moistened the flour with their own blood and fashioned the resulting dough into human shapes, gave them life and taught them how to care for and reproduce themselves. In one version of the creation story, he and another god, Tezcatlipoca, transformed themselves into snakes and ripped a giant sea monster named Cipactli in half; one part of her became the earth, the other the sky.

In another myth he is the reason the Aztec people have access to maize or corn which is why he is considred a god of agriculture. The story goes like this, the Aztec people initially only had access to roots and wild game for food staples. But, they knew of the existence of maize but, at that time, maize was located on the other side of a mountain range that surrounded the Aztec homeland. So, they had gone to the gods for help to bring it to them. Other gods had already attempted to retrieve the maize by moving the mountains in different ways, but their efforts had all been unsuccessful. Leaving the Aztecs still with no access to maize. One day Quetzalcoatl decides to give it try. Where others had approached this problem with their brute strength, Quetzalcoatl decided to take a different approach by relying on his keen mind. So, he decided to instead of go big and strong to go small. He turned himself into a black ant and followed the other ants in their ant trail over the mountains. After a long and difficult journey, Quetzalcoatl reached the maize. He grabs one single kernel and triumphantly brings it back to the Aztec people where it becomes a crucial part of their culture and expansion of their civilization.

Lilith

Next up, I am going to talk about probably one of the most famous goddesses outside of Medusa associated with snakes, Lilith. Her association with snake comes from her connection to Jewish folklore. I honestly could go on and on as to why she is associated to snakes through out many myths and associations with them. But I will limit myself to just a few reasons why. First, it is thought in some Jewish folklore that since she was the consort of Samael (satan) she played a crucial part in his role in the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the garden of Eden. Samael literally translates to venom of god so of course what image do they usually depict Samael as in this story? A serpent. So, because of her connection to him, this story, and having many children with him she is also often depicted with a snake as a symbol. In a guilty by association kind of way. But, she is associated to them for her own reasons as well. Just as a snake sheds its skin to regenerate, Lilith is seen as a figure who rejects societal constraints, particularly those placed on women, making the snake a fitting symbol for her rebellious spirit. Not only that her rebellion does allow her access to so much hidden knowledge she wouldn’t have gained access to if she had stayed in the garden as Adam’s first wife. Which is why she encourages us to always challenge and question authority to find the knowledge they hide.

Okay, so you know why she was associated with snakes but, who is she?

For 4,000 years Lilith has wandered the earth. Lilith is a “Dark” Goddess, she is one of incredible power, charisma, and persuasion. She is a mistress of the divine feminine and a true seductress. She is a Queen of Darkness and understands the powerful energies that sleep in the night and can bend them to her will. She hears the dark whispers of the forgotten night. The sleeping Dark mother who calls to the creatures of the nights and nurtures them in blankets of moonlight. She is Lilith, the Dark Mother and she is incredible to work with! She is a healer and a lover and one who can provide comfort and support to those in need. Her night energies provide rest and comfort and she can inspire those who work with her with dreams. She empowers those she works with. She can awaken our power and help us to claim who we are and our space and become the people we desire to be. She reminds us of our truth and the powerful individuals that we are. Lilith is not bad or evil. Lilith is the voice inside of you telling you to act when you feel you’ve been treated unfairly by the patriarchy. She is the voice that says it’s not only ok but good to enjoy sex and your sensuality. She is the voice calling for the divine feminine in each one of us to stand up and fight for our power.

Lilith invites us to explore the serpent energy and aspects of our being, to confront the fears and shame that may have kept us from fully expressing ourselves, and to integrate these wild, untamed parts into our conscious awareness. By embodying the untamed, Lilith also challenges societal norms and expectations, particularly those that seek to control or limit the expression of feminine power and sexuality. She reminds us that our desires, our sexuality, and our authentic self-expression are sacred and worthy of celebration, rather than something to be ashamed of or suppressed. She reminds us that if the patriarchy steps out of line its okay for us to strike back with our venomous and lethal bite. If you want to learn more about her and really go in depth into her history you can check out my guide here and purchase my eBook to work with her below!

In this ebook you will learn her detailed history, How to work with and honor her, and be provided with journal prompts, spells, prayers, and shadow work prompts to help you liberate all parts of yourself.

Asclepius

Asclepius was known in Greek and Roman mythology as the god of medicine and healing, whose powers extended not just to healing but, he was known to bring back the dead. Aesculapius is the son of the god Apollo and Coronis. In some stories, she’s a nymph but, in other stories they say she’s a mortal princess. Like many humans who tangle with the gods she meets a tragic ending by Apollo killing her in a fit of jealous rage. Then laying her body out on a funeral pyre with the aid of his twin sister Artemis. They cut open her belly and pulled his unborn child Asclepius out. Some myths say Artemis left with him and some say it was Apollo himself but, the newly born Asclepius was given to the wise healer and teacher Chiron to raise. Under Chiron’s care Asclepius learned so much about healing and medicine he absorbed the knowledge so well, he became more skilled than even his teacher. His exceptionally proficient skills in healing and medicine threatened the order of the cosmos, which lead to Zeus killing him with a lightning bolt. While he may have started as a demi god he grow in power and knowledge to claim his own spot among the Olympian pantheon as a god.

Since, Asclepius is THE Greek god of healing and snakes were seen as symbols of healing and medicine in Greece it makes sense that his main symbol would be a snake. You know that famous symbol you see at most hospitals and on ambulances with a rod and a snake twisting around it. That is his most famous symbol and healing staff. There are even a few myths and stories tying him to snakes as well. In one story he comes across a snake that is on the brink of death and he aids him with healing. As a thank you the snake whispers to him all of its secret medicinal knowledge. Especially how to use their venom in healing medicines and practices. Asclepius took that knowledge back to his temples where he used it in countless healing sessions for the people of Greece. It was even said that snakes roamed his temples freely always being welcome there to share their healing and wisdom.

Hygeia

Hygieia was very important in her role to protect the health of ancient Greeks, first in Athens, than the rest of the Greco-Roman world. In Greek mythology, Hygeia was the goddess of health, cleanliness, and sanitation. She was the daughter of Asclepius, the god of medicine (we just talked about above)), and Epione, the goddess of pain relief. While her father was associated with healing, her role was in the prevention of sickness and continuation of good health. Hygeia was originally associated with physical health only , but later became the patroness of mental health as well. She was a guardian of public welfare and encouraged people to maintain a healthy lifestyle in all areas. Since, she is a symbol of medicine and the daughter of the keeper of medicinal knowledge and power, Hygieia’s symbol is a either her simply holding a snake or a chalice with a snake twined around its stem. She is very intimately connected to the image and healing powers of snakes. They even were welcome and lovingly tended to by her inside of her temples just like her father.

The rainbow snake

Next up we have probably the oldest continuous religion with the influence of the snake I can find. Rock art featuring this great Ancestral being dates as far back as 6,000 years! The Rainbow Serpent (Serpant) is a deity in Australian Aboriginal lore that represents one of the great and powerful forces of nature and spirit. Connected to water, the Rainbow Serpent is the great life giver, a symbol of fertility and regeneration, and the protector of water. Which is where the rainbow Serpent lives. While the rainbow serpent is seen the creator god and protector of the people, the Rainbow Serpent can also be a destructive force if it is not properly respected. In times of anger or rage it causes storms and floods to act as punishment against those who disobey the laws. The story I found about this serpent goes like this. The story describes a time long ago when the Earth was flat. The serpent was one of the Dreamtime creatures (or creator gods) who held great powers and gave shape to the Earth. One day the serpent emerged from under the ground to awaken different groups of animals from the dreamtime. The movement of its body formed physical features like hills, gorges, creeks and rivers into the once-featureless terrain. It slithered all over the country, occupying waterholes and providing nourishing water. Once it grew tired with shaping the Earth, it coiled into a waterhole where it lays still to this day except when we see a rainbow. It is thought that a rainbow means the rainbow snake moved from one watering hole to another one to replenish the water as it lays coiled resting at the bottom.

Tiamat

The last deity I am going to bring up related to snakes isn’t really a snake but, a dragon. I am including her for a few reasons. The first being that many different cultures like those in Asia don’t see a difference between dragons and snakes at all. The second reason being, Tiamat is also a dragon who, if you believe the myths we are living inside of right now. How much more of a representation of rebirth, transformation, and fertility could she be? So, who is Tiamat. In Mesopotamian religion, Tiamat is a primordial goddess of the sea, mating with Abzû, the god of the groundwater, to produce younger gods. She is the symbol of the chaos of primordial creation. She is referred to as a woman and described as “the glistening one” As with all myths and especially those involving the divine feminine there are two parts to the Tiamat mythos. In the first half, she is a creator goddess, through a sacred marriage between different waters, peacefully creating the cosmos through their many generations of offspring born out of love. In the second half Tiamat is considered the monstrous embodiment of primordial chaos as a result of her own children’s actions. As with almost every pantheon her children and husband end up at war battling over power and her son wanting to take the throne. This war results in one of her own children killing her husband. In a response full of grief and betrayal at the hands of her children she let’s loss her rage on them by creating a legion of monsters to war against them for quite a long time. Until one day, her own son Marduk finally slays her and rips her body in half to create the realm we live on now. If you want to hear the full telling of her story and meet her check out my class with DiviNation Academy here.

A fundamental pillar of Paganism is working with the deities that one believes in. While all practicing Pagans have varying beliefs about the gods and goddesses, most agree that honoring their deities is a great way to connect with them and further their spiritual goals. But, again remember not every pagan works with deities. Also remember there are literally thousands of different deities out there in the multiverse and which ones you choose to honor will often depend significantly upon what pantheon your spiritual path follows. This eBook will walk you thru the different ways to view deities, what a deity can be, and the basics to start building a deep meaningful relationship with one.

Magical themes and energies of snakes

Snakes are seen as symbols of protection, fertility, luck, resurrection, and eternity in many cultures and religions like we talked about a lot above so far. Their symbolism is often associated with rebirth, transformation, and power. In some cases, snakes can also be seen as symbols of death and destruction. In some cultures, snakes are also associated with mystery, a symbol of healing. In other stories, snakes can be seen as protectors, guardians, and mentors to humans. To others, a snake symbolizes wisdom and the knowledge of secrets. The snake can also represent evil or danger; often associated with deception and temptation, like in one of the most well known stories we talked about above with Adam and eve.

  • transformation
  • rebirth
  • renewal
  • fertility
  • protection
  • healing
  • medicine
  • cycles of life
  • sexual energy
  • divine femine
  • wisdom
  • mystery
  • temptation
  • eternity
  • luck
  • resurrection
  • power
  • danger
  • duality
  • chaos

Duality of snakes

Since I am a grey witch every single energy I work with I look at how it can help me maintain balance and how it can represent the cosmic energy of duality. This energy was a really easy one for me to write about the duality of. This is because, in many cultures, snakes already symbolize duality. Like, wisdom and cunning OR creation and destruction OR healing and death Or chaos and order. I mean as a creature of chaos, the snake itself holds within itself the duality of life and death. They are seen as creatures of duality even for the environments they live in and their abilites to move from underground to above ground with ease and adaptability. Let’s not forget their roles in different stories across cultures putting them in places of duality as well. Like how some place them as protectors to guide the people and even heal like in Greece. Where in Christianity they are the destroyers and the ultimate symbol of evil. Lastly, when we look at the act of shedding their skin that is regeneration at its core. Regeneration is a dualistic act itself. It means something is dying to make room for something new to grow in its place.

Correspondences for Snakes

First, what is a correspondence? A correspondence is an item or symbol that is meant to connect you to a specific energy thru it’s representation. It is seen also as an item to respect, honor, and venerate that energy as well whether it be a deity, an archetype energy, the zodiac energy the moon is currently or a symbol like the snake, I will list below for you to use. Different colors of snakes can mean different things

Sometimes as a way for the universe to send us information and messages it sends them to us in signs and symbols. This could be something from a snake crossing your path while on a walk, entering your home, or even showing up in your dreams. One thing I have come across when working with snakes and understanding their messages is to pay attention to their color and pattern they show up as. Each color is believed to bring its own unique message or meaning. There are some differing beliefs about each color based on the region and culture you look at but, below I have put together the most commonly accepted ones I can find and I use in my life.

  • Black snakes, typically represent bad luck and death in many cultures.
  • Green snakes are viewed as messengers of good fortune.
  • Red snakes are generally associated with fire, passion, and danger. They can also symbolize transformation and rebirth.
  • White snakes tend to represent purity and spiritual enlightenment. They are often seen as a sign of good luck or fortune in many cultures.
  • Brown snakes usually symbolize the earth element and are viewed as a symbol of protection and stability.
  • Yellow snakes are seen as a sign of wisdom and the power of knowledge. They can also represent wealth and prosperity.
  • In Chinese culture, black and white snakes together symbolize yin and yang—the two opposing forces of the universe —coming together in harmony.

Ways to work with snakes

Each one of us will develop our own relationship with these mysterious, sensual, healing, and wise creatures. It is up to you to sit with the energy of the snake, read the myths about them, and listen to what feels right for you and how they want to work with you. Listen to the wisdom they whisper with each hiss as they slither through the shadows. Remember; it’s important to approach them with respect, reverence, and gratitude to build a relationship with these mystical creatures. Follow your intuition and work with them however you feel pulled to but, here are some ideas to get you started on ways to work with snakes and serpents in your magical practices and life.

Study the Snake

The first thing just like with every single energy I talk about and write about for you to work with magically, is to study it. I know this guide is massive. I know I have a lot of information in here but, there is soo much more to cover when it comes to these multi faceted and mystical creatures. Go and read about more myths of snakes and their different symbolism in cultures I didn’t cover here. Read about deities who call the snake their companion and try and add them to your practice. Learn more about how their venom is used in healing practices. Learn about the different types of snakes in different regions of the world. What they look like, their habits, and how they adapt to their environments. The more you study and learn the better! When working with snakes it is all about building a true relationship with them and you do this first by getting to know who they are.

Meditation

The slow-moving, entrancing motion of snakes is dangerously, but powerfully hypnotic. Use the imagery of the snake in meditation to enhance your trance state. Serpents are an ideal meditation focal image for conquering fear, moving through difficult feelings and regaining your power.

Visit a snake rescue or volunteer at one

What better way to connect to these creatures then to get up and personal with them while doing some kind work to help some who may need a little extra love in life right now. You can do this by finding a snake rescue near you . Most will have some way for you to go and visit the snakes who have been rehomed there. You can usually support them by paying an admission fee. Some will even let you adopt a snake from them or volunteer your time there as well. So, go online and find one near you to visit. I will be taking my son to this one near us soon. https://snakediscovery.com/

Adopt or buy a snake as a companion

If you feel you have the time and resources to care for a snake. If you have done the research and did the proper preparation. If you feel really drawn to work with them in your every day life why not add one to your home. But, again make sure you do this responsibly and only get one if you truly have done the research and feel prepared.

Go on a walk in nature to encounter one

Snakes are very versatile creatures living in many different types of climates in many regions across the world. Which means depending o the season and weather in your current part of the world you are likely to come across one. So, one way you can connect with them is do a little research about areas near you where you can go on a mindful walk in nature and hopefully come across one on your path. Don’t forget to take note of the colors and patterns you see like we talked about above. That way when you come home you can look into deciphering the message they have for you.

Slither in the shadows with them during shadow work

You can work with them as a spirit guide or familiar depending on your belief system when doing shadow work. You follow them as they slither comfortably into the shadows to show you what you hide. When working with them in that way, the snake or serpent can guide you to universal truths, cosmic knowledge, the shedding of skins, and profound healing. Shed your skin with the snake ritual

This ritual I have created to help you start your work with the snake doesn’t require much just you, the image of the snake in your minds eye, and a bath scrub. This ritual is meant to help you literally shed dead and old skin from your body. To allow your new fresh glowing skin to grow. But, this can be an uncomfortable and painful process. So this ritual also is dripping with self love to help ease the transition.

To prepare for this ritual you will need to decide if you want to take a ritual bath or a ritual shower. I prefer to do ritual showers with this ritual because, it is easier to scrub and remove skin from your body and you are left with more room for movement. If you are going to do a ritual bath then you need to draw it and add any herbs you would like to it that promote self love. Like lavender, rose petals, rosemary, or any others you like to use. Maybe even add some pink salt. If you need ideas I do have a spell for a self love ritual bath on my Pinterest here.

Once you have your bath drawn or your shower going it is time to get into sacred container. Do this while you are holding on to your bath scrub you picked out to infuse it with the energy you are calling into your sacred container of self love, renewal, and letting go. However you do this is up to you but, I want you to focus on an image of a snake in your minds eye. Focus on what it looks like, the color of each scale, how it moves, and the energy it gives to you about renewal. What does it hiss to you that you need to let go? What parts of you need to be shed with your old and dead skin? What parts of you are ready to be removed so you can awaken the next stage of your enlightenment?

When you feel that the snake is there in the bathroom with you. When you feel you have listened to their hisses whispering to you what needs to be shed and let go for your next transformation. It is time to get into either your shower or bath when you step in make sure you do so on an inhale of breath while envisioning the energy of the snake and water entering your energetic system. On your next big exhale you will release any tension, resistance or stress in your body still. As you feel the water start to hit your skin and wash over your body imagine and picture the snake right there with you. Slithering up and down your body showing you the areas of your body that need extra attention. Showing you the places you have energetic wounds sitting waiting for you to scrub clean and allow them to heal. As you watch the snake show you those place on your body take your bath scrub in your hands. While holding on to it focus on adding all your energy of self love and healing into your scrub. Once you feel it has been infused into your scrub. Take it and begin to scrub your body from head to toe. Making sure to pay special attention to the areas the snake showed you. As you are scrubbing make sure to focus on the old energy, the old you, the old skin being removed. Focus on the new skin coming in to transform you into the next highest version of yourself, shedding your skin and old self just as the snake has guided you to do.

This ritual can sometimes leave you feeling pretty raw, vulnerable, and sensitive. So, if there wasn’t enough self love infused in your scrub make sure to do some more self love rituals and self care. Make sure you allow yourself the space to feel what you need to after shedding the old you.

Final thoughts on how to use the energy of the snake this year

Snakes or Serpents are associated with both darkness and illumination across many cultures throughout history and time. Snakes offer a profound lens through which to explore the realms of spirituality, transformation, and protection. Remember, snakes are known for their ability to shed their skin, symbolizing the process of letting go of the old and embracing the new which is going to be the central theme to this entire year. Snakes really are everything you aspire to be: smooth, sneaky, and completely unbothered by the opinions of others. They’re the passive-aggressive MVPs of the animal kingdom. They slither through life with the grace and determination to get to their next goal. Never being afraid to strike out with a venomous bites to protect yourself and your way of life. So, use this guide to help you tap into this energy and become all you truly want to be in life regenerating from the inside out like the snake

Celebrate New Years Eve with abundance, renewal, and protection Magic

New Year’s Eve is a liminal time exploding with the energy of renewal, transformation, and change. Marking the end of one calendar year and the beginning of another, it offers a secular reason for people to celebrate together. As we look upon a new calendar year full of possibilities and opportunities, it is important to start off the right way. Along with making resolutions, I like to ring in the New Year with a bit of magic aimed at accomplishing my goals. removing obstacles over the next twelve months, calling in abundance, and protection. This is a time for celebrating the changing seasons by incorporating spells into your New Year’s Eve festivities. Doing this can set the tone for a vibrant, abundant, and magical calendar year ahead.

What is the new year?

The new year is a symbolic time to say goodbye to the old and welcome the new. The new year is the beginning of a new calendar year. The new year is celebrated on January 1st in most countries that use the Gregorian calendar, including the United States. However, the new year is celebrated on different dates in other calendars, such as the Chinese, Jewish, and Islamic calendars.

History of the New year

While it seems secular now, New Year’s is actually very much tied to ancient pagan celebrations. Many of our modern traditions are passed down to us from the ancients cultures and peoples. New year celebrations go back at least to the Babylonians. The Romans took these celebrations to the next level with copious amounts of drinking, feasting, and partying.

The new year hasn’t always been celebrated on December 31st/ January 1st. In 2000 B.C. the new year was celebrated around the time of the vernal equinox, in mid-March, in Mesopotamia. Today, most New Year’s celebrations start on New Year’s Eve, December 31, the final day of the year on the Gregorian calendar, and continue through New Year’s Day on January first.

The New Year a Liminal Time

As the old year fades away and the new one begins, we find ourselves in a liminal space. This is a time of transition and transformation, when anything is possible. It’s a time when we sit on the edge of one calendar year turning a page for another one to begin. The liminal space between one year ending and another beginning is a special time that should be embraced fully!

The New Year a time of abundance

When the calendar new year comes again it opens up a portal of abundance and wealth. The transition from one year to the next is seen as a chance to “clean the slate” and start anew, creating an optimistic outlook for the future. This includes the abundance of having all our needs met in life. This is a time when we set our intentions for the year ahead and what we all want to manifest. So, on this new years eve we do our best to have our life look like what we wish to manifest in the year ahead. We surround ourselves with an abundance of feasting, drinking, being around community, and loved ones as we ring in the new year ahead. We show the universe and the gods and goddesses all we wish for them to give us in the year ahead.

The New Year a time of reset

The calendar New year is the closing of one new year and the opening of another opening of a new one. This new start comes with a naturally feeling of renewal and reset. It is a chance to press the reset button on our lives, a chance to get it right this time. This is a time to relook at all the past year and reset for something brand new you have never seen before to unfold in front of you. If you want to learn how do to reset your entire life this new year’s eve check our my guide here.

Common folklore traditions

There are many different folklore and traditions around the world for how to celebrate New Year’s Eve. New Year’s Eve is usually celebrated by most with gathering alongside friends and family. Popular rituals include serving food that symbolizes good fortune and making resolutions focused on what one hopes to accomplish in the next year. Along side doing things to draw in good fortune and to protect yourself and the home from unwanted spirits to come into your home. Let’s take a look at some of the many but, certainly not all, of the ancient traditions and folklore from across the earthly realm I have found below.

  • Ancient Babylonians celebrated the new year with feasts and returning farm equipment that had been borrowed from others.
  • In Norse traditions, Yule celebrations ended around the new year. The last feasts of the Winter Solstice were huge on this final night to celebrate the turning of the wheel.
  • In both Ancient Egyptian and Greek societies they paraded a baby around to symbolize the beginning of the new year.
  • The romans would kiss each other at midnight to bring love and prosperity into the next year plus to also ward off unwanted and malevolent spirits.
  • For the Aztecs, this was a time to sacrifice children by drowning in order to buy the favor of the rain gods.
  • DON’T do any laundry on New Years Day. In china it’s thought if you do laundry on New years you are setting up your next year to be full of cleaning
  • Do NOT cry, crying on January 1st instills a sad and negative mood throughout the next 12 months.
  • Make sure you wake up at dawn. In fact, according to a Polish tradition, getting up early on New Year’s Eve will make you wake up to the crowing of the rooster (and without the slightest effort) for the rest of the year.
  • If your dream for the next year is to travel the world on New Year’s Eve in Colombia, people go around with an empty suitcase which, according to ancient superstition, would ensure a nice trip within the year.
  • Eat 12 grapes (one after the other) just like they do in Spain, where they are said to bring good luck.
  • Have black cabbage and lentils be apart of your new years feast like the do in the southern United states to call in good luck, prosperity, and wealth
  • According to the ancient Chinese tradition, on New Year’s Day, you should not clean the house, as removing the dust or sweeping the floor would literally “sweep” away the good luck and the good vibes that would have been attracted by the celebrations and decorations dedicated to the new year.
  • Observe the weather in the very early hours of January 1st; if the wind blows from the south, the new year will be rich and prosperous; if instead, it comes from the north, then the new year will be problematic and turbulent, so better fasten your seat belts. The wind from the east also brings famines and calamities, while the wind from the west means that the new year will be rich and lush.
  • According to an Italian tradition, men and women should wear red underwear on New Year’s Eve if they want to find love, passion, good sex, and good luck in the next year to come.
  • If you live or are celebrating near a lake or ocean, try out this Brazilian ritual on New Year’s Eve, which involves jumping seven waves. With each jump, you make a wish for the upcoming year.
  • An ancient Persian New year’s tradition that is still celebrated by some in Iran is to light a bonfire and once you do you jump over it twice. On the first jump you say a blessing releasing your past years pain into the flame and then on the jump back. You say a blessing asking for the health of the flame to bless your life in the coming year ahead.
  • Eat round foods. In many cultures, eating round foods on New Year’s Eve is believed to bring prosperity and abundance in the new year. In Europe and the United States, people eat 12 round fruits to represent each month of the year. In the Philippines, people eat 13, which is considered a lucky number.
  • Smash pomegranates. In Ancient Greece, pomegranates were viewed as a symbol of abundance and luck. On new years eve people were seen smashing pomegranates outside their doors to bring good luck to the new year. The more pomegranate seeds spilled in the smash, the more luck you’ll have for the new year.
  • In Denmark, they break plates this tradition is done to ward off malevolent spirits and is symbolic of a fresh start to the new year.
  • Preparing mochi, which is a Japanese rice cake, on New Year’s is symbolic of renewal and is seen to bring about blessings for the year.
  • Grab some bread and bang the bread against the walls. The Irish believe that doing so wards off malevolent spirits and brings abundance to the coming year.
  • Danish tradition includes standing on the chair and “jumping” into the new year at midnight. It’s also believed that if you forget, it’s bad luck. ( I do this one every year)

The New Year and Duality

Since, I am a grey witch I look for the duality in every single energy I work with including sacred times like New year’s eve. I have always loved New Year’s Eve for it’s duality. It’s a time of reflection for me and a time to set my intentions for the new year. It’s a time to reflect on the past while looking towards the hope of the future ahead. It’s a time to not just look at what I want to change and let go of but, to congratulate myself for the all the mountains I climbed. It’s a time when I take a look at what worked from the past year and what didn’t. I am reminded of the constant ebb and flow in life, the constant change, and how to live in the balance of liminal transformation as one chapter ends and a new one begins.

First, what is a correspondence? A correspondence is an item or symbol that is meant to connect you to a specific energy thru it’s representation. Ways to work with the energy of New years

However you choose to work with the New year’s eve magic and energies make sure to follow your intuition where it leads you. Make sure you tap into the energies of abundance, renewal, and the closing of one chapter, and the opening of a new one. In your everyday life, you can work with any affirmations, mantras, and visualization work for abundance, new beginnings, endings, reflection, and the changing of the calendar year. Let’s take a look at some of the many different ways you can magical work with the energy of New year’s eve.

Imagine and set your New year SMART goals

One of the number one ways to celebrate new years eve is to sit down, let your imagination run wild and think of all the biggest and wildest goals you wish to set for the year ahead. This is the eve when you are observing the calendar year that you can really think big, let the walls down and don’t think about what you can’t have but, come from a mindset of abundance and focus on what you can have. But, don’t forget to not only let your imagination run with your goals but take the time to set them in a specific way by making them SMART goals. If you have been with me the last year I have written about SMART goals many times, but I do so because using this method changed how I was able to take those goals in my imagination and bring them to life. To learn all about SMART goals and how to set them this New Year’s eve head over to my guide here now!

Visualization

Visualization is great way to set intentions for the new year. This is going to be the practice I am really intentionally committing to this New years eve and all 2025 long. I’ve come to learn with my manifestation work in the past year just speaking things out loud is not enough. I must see myself already having what I want in my hands. So, close your eyes and imagine yourself surrounded by all of the things you want to manifest in the new year. Picture yourself living out your dreams, achieving success, and feeling fulfilled by all that you have accomplished. Hold onto this image as you move forward into the new year, knowing that it will come true if you put in the effort and stay focused on your goals.

Cast protection spells

New Year’s Eve is a liminal time where the energies around us are more susceptible to change. As we look upon a new year full of possibilities and opportunities, it is important to start off the right way. Protecting ourselves, our family, and our space is something essential to do before we commence into the new year. A New Year’s Eve Protection Spell can be a powerful tool to keep us safe and supported as we let go of the old year and prepare for the future. So cast those protection spells this New Year’s eve to protect you home, your family, and your life all year long. Ps. don’t forget to cleanse yourself, your tools, and your space as well before you cast your protection spells.

Reflection through Shadow work

Remember how New years eve is a liminal time. It is time when we are sitting on the edge of change and transformation. In order to move onto the next stage of evolution and change that we are greeting in the new year ahead we must first look back. We must look at the highest heights we reached and lowest depths we sank to down deep. We must decide what we want take from one chapter into the next and what we wish to leave behind. The best way to do this for me is through shadow work. If you would like to learn more about shadow work you can purchase my eBook here;  you can book me for a 1:1 session as your guide here; and you can watch my free class previously taught on it through Divination here.

Release work spells

As we go into the new year ahead with hope for a bright future we have to make sure we have left the things we no longer need in the past. One way to do this is to make sure we energetically and magically release the things from the past year. One of my favorite ways to do this on New year’s eve is to write down the things I wish to release. The patterns in the past year that no longer serve me and I no longer wish to repeat. Along with the blockages I met during the past year to align with the correct energies to manifest all of my goals being met. Once I write them down I wait until the clock strikes 12 then I read them out loud and burn them in fire to release the blockage from life. To no longer carry any of that into my new chapter of life.

Abundance and good luck spells

With a New calendar year unfolding before us on New Year’s Eve this is a day we can set ourselves up for a long and prosperous year ahead. We can tap into that unlimited potential this magical unknown year has for us. There are countless different traditions you can do like some we talked about above from around the earthy realm that will bring in abundance and good luck. Along with just as many spells. One really poplar one I like is to place a bowl of coins outside my threshold. When you return home for the first time in the new year (perhaps after a late-night party),bless them for everything you want in the new year to come. To get more ideas for abundance and good luck spells head over to my Pinterest where I have many or check out my abundance guide and my guide all about Thursdays magic.

This spell is my favorite one to do every single New Year’s Eve. It masters the liminal space and energy of change on the night, the magic and mastery of time to bring in a very abundant, vibrant, and magical life in 2025.

Shortly before midnight on New year’s eve Grab 12 candles, I prefer to use white or green, 12 coins, and an herb bundle made of rosemary, thyme, sage, and bay leaves. Take your candles and set them on the floor in front of in a circle to mimic a clock and place one coin under each candle. Then get yourself into sacred container while you focus on what it is you want to manifest in the next year ahead. Once you feel you have a clear vision in your head and your intent is set, sit with it until the clock strikes midnight. Once the you hear the clock chime, start lighting each candle in your circle starting at the top aka 12 o’clock and going clockwise until all 12 candles are lit. Don’t forget to focus on your intention you are setting for the year ahead as you light each candle in your magical clock. Once this is done go around your entire home and smoke cleanse your space bringing in your most abundant year yet. Let the candles burn until they go out on their own or if you are not comfortable with that for safety reasons burn them for 12 minutes for each candle and then blow them out by 1 as the time is met.

Other ways to work with New Year’s Eve

  • Divination-pull some cards or do some mirror scrying. Ps. don’t forget you can always book me for a reading in the shop
  • Create a new year altar
  • Perform a gratitude ritual like writing a list of all the things you are grateful for and reading them out loud to the multiverse

Working with the magic of Friday the 13th

Friday the 13th has held our fascination in culture for a long time now, for many it has gotten a bit of an infamous reputation even. Because, most of the beliefs are that this day is unlucky. While that is the case in some cultures and practices it’s not the case for all. For many, we see that by bringing the beautiful and loving energies of Friday and the transformative and whole energies of the number 13 together, Friday the 13th is in fact, a very powerful day. A day for feminine energy, manifestation, and creativity. We see the magic of this day and it’s energy mirrored in the 13 lunar cycles of the year and in the blood women shed each month. It is also an extremely powerful time of death and rebirth as it represents that mid-point in the cycle between something new emerging and something old slipping away. Friday the 13th is a day that invites us to explore the depths of our soul and embrace our spiritual journey. Join me under the night sky as you speak to the moon, to learn all about the magic you can harness on this mysterious and mystical day instead of being afraid.

History and legends of Friday the 13th as unlucky

To truly understand the significance of Friday the 13th, we need to delve into its historical origins, explore its spiritual interpretations, and unravel the common beliefs and myths associated with it. The number 13 has a long and intriguing history, steeped in superstition and lore. Its reputation as an unlucky number can be traced back to various ancient civilizations and cultural beliefs. In fact, fear of the number 13 even has a specific name: triskaidekaphobia. The fear of the number 13 is so strong that it has influenced architecture and design. Many buildings and hotels skip the thirteenth floor entirely, jumping from the twelfth to the fourteenth floor in a practice known as; “floor numbering avoidance.” Let’s take a look at some of the myths that have lead to this deep seated fear and feeling of being unlucky.

First up an example of this day being unlucky and it comes from Norse mythology. From what I can find this may even be the oldest one. There was a dinner party being held in Valhalla amongst the gods for all, but one. The trickster god loki was not invited. When he heard of this he decided to attend anyways as the 13th guest of the party. Than during the party he convinced Höðr to shoot Balder with a mistletoe-tipped arrow killing him. Thus marking this day as unlucky.

Next up, we look at Christianity where we see the number 13th portrayed again as being unlucky. This comes up in the story of the last supper when the one who betrayed Jesus was the 13th guest; Judas. Not only that, according to Christian tradition, Jesus was crucified on a Friday, which has led some to view the day as a symbol of suffering and sorrow adding more bad luck to this day for some. We see it again in history with Christianity and the knights templar as well. Many even trace the origins of Friday the 13th superstitions back to the day they were arrested. Which was on Friday, October 13, 1307 by French King Philip IV. Most were imprisoned and later executed. This association between the number 13 and betrayal has resonated throughout history and has contributed to the belief that it brings bad luck.

The energies of Friday the 13th

Throughout history, the number 13 has been steeped in mystery and superstition. In numerology, this number is often considered to be symbolic of change, transformation, and spiritual growth. It is believed to possess a powerful energy that can bring about both wanted and unwanted outcomes. Similarly, the day of Friday has its own spiritual connections. In many cultures, Friday is associated with the planet Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. It is seen as a day of romance, creativity, and spiritual connection. When you combine these two energies the ripe fertile energy of manifestation appears. It is said to be a day when the veil between the physical and spiritual realms is thin, allowing for deeper insights, heightened intuition and spiritual awakening.

Friday the 13th; A day of the goddess

Friday the 13th is not only seen as an unlucky day, but a day of deep beauty and fertility. Before patriarchal times, Friday the 13th was considered the day of the Goddess. It was considered a day to honor the Divine Feminine that lives in us all and to honor the cycles of creation and death and rebirth. With it being the day of the Goddess it is a beautiful day for creating and celebrating life. It is a lovely day for getting in tune with your emotions, sensitivities, and giving thanks to the beautiful Goddess that lives in us all. All this fertile divine feminine energy makes Friday the 13th, a very powerful day to manifest, honor creativity, and to celebrate beauty, wisdom, and nourishment of the soul.

Friday the 13th; manifestation and spiritual awakening

Friday the 13th is a very fertile day for setting intentions, visualizing goals, and engaging in rituals to bring about positive change in our lives. the combination of Friday, associated with Venus, the planet of love and abundance, and the number 13, which is associated with transformation and rebirth, creates a potent energy for manifesting desires and intentions. The alignment of these cosmic energies amplifies our ability to attract what we desire and manifest our dreams into reality.

Friday the 13th is also seen as an opportunity for deep introspection, self-reflection, spiritual awakening, and personal growth. Friday the 13th is seen as a time to delve into one’s inner world and confront any emotional or spiritual challenges that may be hindering our personal growth. It is believed that by embracing this day and its energies, we can embark on a journey of self-discovery and transformation, shedding old patterns and beliefs that no longer serve us.

Friday the 13th and duality

Since, I am a grey witch I look for the duality in every single energy I work with including sacred times like Friday the 13th. Man does, this day have so much duality to it and honestly I hope I have made it obvious at this point throughout this post even. While most people think of Friday the 13th as something to be fearful of as a day full of bad luck, dreadful omens, and misfortune. It’s also a time that is fertile with beautiful and loving energy to guide you towards spiritual awakening and manifestation with creativity. You can’t get much more dualistic in energy then that. Plus this day is also connected to a very liminal pocket of time and energy. It’s a time of death and rebirth, representing the midpoint between something new and something old.

Correspondences for Friday the 13th

Ways to work with the energy of Friday the 13th

As witches, we can associate a lot of great, and magical, things with Friday the 13th. Friday is ruled by Venus, the planet of love, harmony, and money. It’s a good day for self-care, self-love, and to make for some great Venusian-style hedonism. When it comes to this mysterious, mystical, and fertile day there are countless ways to work with it. I will go over some below.

Shadow work

One of my favorite ways to work with this energy is to tap into the very fertile energies prime for personal growth and spiritual awakening on this day is through shadow work. Shadow work on this day is profound leading us to places inside ourselves to release blockages to create a life we have always wanted to manifest. Guiding us to the inner goddess within the creative energy swirling in our womb space.  If you would like to learn more about shadow work you can purchase my eBook here; you can book me for a 1:1 session as your guide here; and you can watch my free class previously taught on it through Divination here.

Sex Magic
Own your sexuality! Use your orgasms to set intentions. As you pleasure yourself or consensually with a partner, think of a goal that you want to achieve and attain. While climaxing, state the intention over and over. Being that sex and orgasms are full of fertile manifestation energy, you can make your visions true by manifesting them this way into your life. On top of that it adds a very intimate and magical layer to your sex life and relationship. To learn more about sex magic you can watch my class with Divination Academy on YouTube here.

Harness the bad luck for protection magic

A reality we all have to face in life is that from time to time we will need protection from energies that come our way. Whether it be from a thing, place, or person in our life. So, why not work with the unlucky energy that exists within this day to help you do that. This is one of my favorite ways to work with this day! Taking bad luck, harnessing it, and directing it towards others to protect you can really put a damper on others day. Plus you can get pretty creative with your hexes and curses you cast that are anchored in the energy of bad luck and misfortune. You can make them as elaborate or as simples as you want as well! From writing their name on a piece of toilet paper, then taking it and flushing it down the toilet to flush away all of their good luck and bring only bad luck from this day on. You can cast hexes to just annoy them throughout the day as well; like having one of their shoes never being able to stay tied, or losing sight of their phone every time they set it down. The last way I like to work with this bad luck energy is using it in my protection spells as an amplifier by using its energy in things like bad luck charms and spell bags. Or even weaving it’s energy into my reflective shield causing bad luck and misfortune to befall anyone who sends unwanted energy my way.

Friday the 13th manifestation spell

Use this spell I created below with me today, to manifest 13 of your deepest wishes and dreams with the divine feminine and the energy of 13!

This spell is meant to use the ripe and fertility energy of Friday the 13th to manifest your wishes and dreams. What you will need is a cauldron or fire safe bowl, a marker, a white candle and 13 bay leaves.

When you are ready to begin get yourself into sacred container by visualizing white, warm, feminine energy surrounding you. Once you feel anchored in your container focus on 13 things you want in your life right now and focus on them clearly with every detail in your minds eye. Then take your 13 bay leaves and write one manifestation/wish on each bay leaf as you visualize it being in your life. Once done focus on the energy and number of 13 and light your candle sitting within the cauldron or bowl. Next, focus on the flame and as you burn each bay leave in the flame releasing your wish to the multiverse say. “ By the power of 13, my wishes I burn. By the power of 13 all my dreams come to me.”

Final thoughts

While some associate this day with bad luck and misfortune, others perceive it as a time of powerful manifestation and spiritual awakening. It is up to each individual to decide how they want to interpret and engage with the energies of this unique day. Friday the 13th is a day that invites us to explore the depths of our soul and embrace our spiritual journey. It is a time to release fears and embrace the unknown, trusting that the universe has a plan for us. By understanding the spiritual meaning of Friday the 13th, we can navigate this day with confidence and harness its powerful energy to manifest our desires and cultivate a deeper connection with ourselves and the world around us. The magic of working with Pumpkins

Autumn is a magical time, perfect for witchcraft, as we approach the latter half of the year and the long, dark, cold, months of Winter drawing near. In witchcraft we use many things in our lives as tools for our spell work from nature or our home, like one of the most popular symbols and flavors of fall; Pumpkins. Pumpkins are synonymous with the autumn season we see them everywhere; especially around Halloween / Samhain and carrying through the month of November until Thanksgiving here in the USA. But, Pumpkins and gourds have been used for centuries in magic though as a form of protection, a connection to abundance and fertility, a boost to love and more. Let’s take a look at the biggest fruit, full of seeds of potential inside, who takes center stage during the spooky and fall season; the pumpkin in this blogpost.

Pumpkins what are they?

The pumpkin, Cucurbita pepo, is a type of Winter Squash though technically it is classified as a berry! The name pumpkin originated from the Greek word Pepõn, which means large melon. Most pumpkins are typically large, round and ribbed and of a distinctive orange color. However, they can also be white, green, yellow and other shades depending on the cultivar, as there are 3 or 4 different kinds of pumpkins overall. Harvested in October, this nutritious and versatile orange fruit features flowers, seeds and flesh that are edible and rich in vitamins. The pumpkin, though popular in many places throughout the world today, is native to North America and Mexico and has been cultivated since at least 7000 BCE. They were even a common crop to be planted and grown before beans and corn.

Medicinal properties of Pumpkins

Rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, pumpkins aren’t just the most popular fall flavor and a common witches’ tool set out on our front doorsteps but, they are incredibly healthy for us as well. Pumpkins are loaded with nutrients that can boost your immune system and help you stay healthy like vitamin C, E, and A. Pumpkins are also high in carotenoids, which are compounds that can function as antioxidants and some believe may help protect against certain cancers like, stomach, throat, pancreas and breast cancers. The health benefits keep rolling in with them being high in potassium, vitamin C and fiber, which have been linked to having heart benefits. Plus these popular fruits can help you stay looking younger since they are loaded with nutrients that are great for your skin. Pumpkin seeds can also help boost your mood. They contain tryptophan which helps boost serotonin.

Magical themes of Pumpkins

In witchcraft every single ingredient and tool we use in our spells and rituals has magical themes and energies it can align with and be used for. Pumpkins are no different. They can be used in spells, rituals, or charms to enhance your fertility, boost your manifestation, and connect you to the gratitude of the harvest. Pumpkins in myths and lore

Pumpkins are a true symbol of Autumn and spooky season, most likely because, that’s when they are harvested. We’ve also seen them as part of Fall and spooky season festivals and celebrations for thousands of years across cultures especially during Samhain. Below are a few myths and common lore we have involving pumpkins.

The Origin of carving pumpkins

The act of carving faces into a vegetable originates with the Scots and Irish but they didn’t carve pumpkins in ancient times, they carved vegetables like turnips or potatoes. Later on, after the Scotts-Irish migrated to the New World, they brought their Samhain traditions with them but, started to use the native fruit of the land pumpkins instead. The frightening faces carved into pumpkins were thought to serve as guardians. People believe these glowing, eerie faces could scare away malevolent and confused spirits, and other dark entities, keeping homes safe during the Samhain season when the veil is pulled back from the other side.

The origin of the Jack o lantern

The term Jack o lantern actually originated in England and is linked to a supernatural phenomenon called Ignis Fatuus or “foolish fire”. This is an eerie, spectral light that sort of bobbs and dances. It seduces people off the beaten path and often to their death. In addition to the jack o’ lantern being a spook light, the name also has a couple legends behind it and refers to a character or man named jack or stingy jack who made a deal with the devil. Because of this deal with the devil, he is not permitted to go to Heaven or Hell and is doomed to wander the earth forever with a glowing carved turnip ( now pumpkin) as his head.. And apparently he amuses himself and passes the time by leading people to their doom down dark and haunted paths on Halloween night.

Other mentionings of pumpkins

According to a Huron creation story, pumpkins arose when a divine woman died in childbirth. All of the plants necessary for life sprang up from her body: Beans grew from her legs, corn sprang from her body, and pumpkin vines grew from her head.

In religions that sprang from the Africa, pumpkins are associated with several major deities, particularly Oshun and Shango. Oshun is a goddess of rivers, love, and fertility, which echoes the connections between pumpkins, the element of Water, and the concepts of fertility and abundance as seen in other cultures and traditions.

Duality and Pumpkins

Since, I am a grey witch I look for the duality in every single energy I work with including the tools and spell ingredients I use. Pumpkins are full of duality in the properties they represent and energies they allow us to work with. On one hand they are a symbol of prosperity and abundance. Connecting us to the unlimited and generous flow of abundance calling it INTO our lives. While on the other hand they connect us to the energy of death and protection. Being a common symbol sitting at our front doors protecting our homes and threshold by keeping unwanted entities and spirits OUT.

We can’t forget that the most popular time to work with this tool is in the fall when they are being harvested and there are plenty to go around. The fall season is a really unique pocket of liminal space and time for us to connect to duality. We get to be surrounded by the bounty and abundance of the fall harvest and all the joy, celebration and gratitude that brings. While we are also confronted with the reality of nature beginning to die around us and the dark cold winter that is very soon going to be upon us.

We’ve talked a lot about pumpkins in this post so far, including the magical themes associated with them. Those themes are the energies we can connect to with Pumpkins. They are how we can use them to build our spells and rituals. You have many options on how you want to include them in your spells and rituals and many different ways to work with them. • Carve the pumpkin in a scary face and use it as a protection spell for samhain
  • Use the pumpkin in kitchen magic making pies, cakes, soups or drinks as abundance and fertility spells or to bless your home and hearth
  • Add a candle to the inside of a carved out pumpkin and use it for fire scrying

  • Add them to your Samhain altar for your ancestors to represent death and transformation
  • Write an intention or goal for the spring and bury it in the ground with some seeds for them to grow in the spring

  • Place 7 pumpkin seeds into a green spell bag or packet and place it in your wallet or purse and carry it around to attract prosperity
  • Paint an Algiz, Uruz, or Tyr rune on a pumpkin and place by the front door for protection during the Samhain season

  • Use them as portal magic when the veil is thinned during Samhain
  • Give them as offerings for graveyard magic or to deities of the dead
  • Hold a small pumpkin while working on balancing and aligning your sacral chakra
  • Get 3 smaller pumpkins and paint or carve symbols of fertility on them. Then mediate while focusing on them and thinking about what you would like to bring into life
  • Take a carved pumpkin and place a wish written on a bay leaf inside the pumpkin and bury it in the ground before sunrise

Pumpkin Scrying with water

There are countless forms of divination across the Earth using many different tools. Pumpkins can be powerful tools for divination, particularly in the practice of scrying due to their connection to transformation. Scrying is a form of divination that involves gazing into a reflective or translucent surface to receive visions or insights. Using pumpkins for scrying combines the seasonal magic of autumn with ancient divination practices.

How to perform pumpkin scrying

Hollow Out the Pumpkin- Cut off the top of the pumpkin and scoop out the seeds and pulp. Save the seeds for fertility magic spells for later
Smooth the Interior- Scrape the interior walls until they are smooth.
Create a Reflective Surface- place a small mirror at the bottom of the pumpkin before adding water. This enhances the reflective quality of the water.

Fill the Pumpkin with Water-Pour clean water into the hollowed-out pumpkin, filling it to about three-quarters full.
Create sacred container- Do this in any way that works for you but, I recommned lighting black and white candles and setting them around the pumpkin to enhance the reflection

Gaze into the Water-Look into the surface of the water, allowing your gaze to soften. Don’t force any images to appear; simply observe and remain open to any visions or impressions.
Interpret Your Visions-Take note of any shapes, symbols, or scenes that appear in the water. Trust your intuition to interpret their meanings.

Samhain Pumpkin Protection Spell

Like we talked about above pumpkins were thought to be used as very strong symbols of protection during the fall especially when the veil was it’s thinnest during Samhain. While the veil is pulled back and entities, spirits, and the dead walk among us and come out to play. Don’t forget to protect your threshold. Making sure only those you wish to cross it on that hallowed eve are the ones who can.
Try this protection spell using a carved pumpkin on that night to give those unwanted spirits ghosts and entities a fright! I will even pull this spell out during different times of the year if my home ends up with an increased about of spirit activity for some reason.

What you will need:

A carved pumpkin, white candles, bay leaves, rosemary, sage, coriander, cloves

How to perform:

First take your white candles and set them in your pumpkin envisioning them bringing protection and being the guardian of your home this hallowed night. Next add your herbs of protection and connection to the dead to your pumpkin leaving out the bay leaves. Then take your bay leaves and add them one by one while saying out loud the names of the passed loved ones you would like to be able to cross your threshold and enter your home this hollowed night. After that take the top and with a deep breath seal the spell inside. Knowing this pumpkin will be the one now to decide who will come into your home on this hallowed night.

Kitchen Magic; Baking a pumpkin pie to bless your home

Kitchen magic is a very powerful type of magic that fills up the walls of your home. Allowing you to bless those you love while you can also create memories together and then fill their bellies with food. One common item to be baking right now especially with Thanksgiving at the end of this month when families will gather for a meal is a pumpkin pie. The entire process of making and baking the pie becomes a magical ritual. The spices used have their own magic properties helping you create your spell. You can then draw sigils or symbols in the pie crust before baking to add more magic and blessings for those you choose to serve it too.

Pumpkin Prosperity spell

Pumpkins are a significant sign of abundance and fertility for the fall. Think about when you cut open a pumpkin, it’s absolutely packed with seeds, each representing the possibility of new life and expansion. They can also be used to represent long term abundance as pumpkins can be kept for a long time before they start to decay. Another reason why they are plentiful for the fall harvest during this time right now. Try this prosperity spell using the very fertile and abundant pumpkin and watch your money flow get so much richer.

What you will need:
A piece of pumpkin
3 bag leaves
A pen
A piece of twine
A dollar bill
7 pumpkins
Cinnamon- abundance
Sugar- to sweeten the results and add speed
Rosemary-connection the dead
Basil-abundance/wealth
Nutmeg-abundance

How to perform:
Get yourself into sacred container focusing your energy and breath on abundance, prosperity and what it feels like to have more than all your needs met.
Then take your piece of pumpkin and sprinkle each one of your herbs on the entire thing continuously focusing on abundance and prosperity.
Next take your bay leaves and write the dollar amount you wish to receive on each of the three.
Take your pumpkin piece in your hand and as you envision that dollar amount coming to you freely grab it, the dollar bill and your three leaves and use the twine to bind and wrap the money to you and your family securely around your bright golden piece of pumpkin.
Once securely tied with the magic of a binding knot and your hand go outside somewhere you can bury it into the land. When you have your spot take your spell in your hand and recite out loud as you bury it into the ground.
” Pumpkin, pumpkin tightly bound bring your prosperity to me from the ground.
Pumpkin, pumpkin rich and bright bring this prosperity to me day and night.”

Now watch the money amount you requested begin to flow to you and your home.

The Night of Hecate; Meet the goddess of witches at the crossroads

Hail Hecate! Hail the dark goddess of witchcraft and the crossroads on the night of Hecate!

To some she is Hecate, others Hekate. For many, she comes without a name revealing herself by the howl of her hounds during times of great personal pain and loss. To others she is the triple goddess connecting us to the phases of life as the maiden, the mother, and the crone. While some observe Hecate on the Deipnon, the dark moon, others dedicate a specific day , November 16th, as a time to work with her energy for protection, wisdom, and guidance. November 16th is known as the night she haunts the crossroads with her hounds and we follow the glow of her torch to answer her call. On this night we are meant to leave an offering at the crossroads to Hecate and ask Her to keep us safe from the storms of life, or even better, just keep the damaging and dangerous storms away completely. You can also go to her this evening to get clarity on your path and to appease the dead who wander the earth behind her each night.

What is Hecate night and why we honor it?

November 16th is called Hecate’s Night. On this night she roams the earth with her hounds hearing pleas from us as we stand at the crossroads. This is also the night that new initiations are made for Witches who follow her and a time known for them to gain more access and clarity into her magical ways. The Night of Hecate is a time to celebrate Hecate, and her association with transitions and the crossroads. It’s a time to go to her seeking wisdom and guidance for the year ahead. To give gratitude and thanks for her protection and aid given to those who are oppressed, marginalized, or caught in-between.

Who is Hecate?

There is much to learn about Hecate from the written records, but for a witch to truly know Hecate, we need to experience her. Hecate is a complex goddess with a long history. Hecate is an ancient Greek Goddess often associated with the Underworld, witchcraft, necromancy, crossroads, the spiritual realm, and the moon and so much more. She is the Goddess of Witchcraft, a guide along the path, and the universal Keeper of the Keys. The Guide who leads us back to our soul. And she is a face of The Great Mother, creatrix and destroyer of all. She is a liminal spirit – she guards the thresholds between the human and spirit world. She is the bringer of power and healing. She spins the wheel of time, weaving her magic and mystery throughout. The fiery spark that lives in all the universe.

To learn more about her you can watch my detailed class with DiviNation Academy, to hear myths she is apart of, her different origins, and more below!

Hecate Correspondences to use for Offerings

First, what is a correspondence? A correspondence is an item or symbol that is meant to connect you to a specific energy thru it’s representation. It is seen also as an item to respect, honor, and venerate that energy as well whether it be an archetype energy , or the zodiac energy the moon is currently, or a deity, like I will list below for you to use .Follow your intuition and use what speaks to you!

  • Planet- the moon
  • Animal-snakes, owls, hounds, sheep, crows
  • Element- Earth
  • Zodiac-aries, capricorn, scorpio
  • Sex-feminine

Hekate’s Night Ritual- Hekate’s supper

Hekate’s ancient devotees held dinners in her honor known as Hecate Suppers or Hecate’s Deipnon which is Greek for supper. This ancient festival that honors the goddess Hecate, traditionally was held on the night of the New Moon aka the dark moon every month for some. While others set aside one day of time every year on November 16th to hold theirs. This supper was traditionally known as a time to honor Hecate as the goddess of the crossroads, the underworld, witchcraft, and to purify one’s household and spirit in ancient Greece.

On Hekate’s Night, food offerings were given to Hekate and her hounds, that they loved from the correspondences listed above. These offerings of food were both enjoyed by those celebrating the feast AND left out by the front door (the “crossroad” between indoors and outdoors, between one’s private space and public spaces) or at a crossroad, on a (perishable) plate or flat stone, as an offering to Hecate as she roams the Earth by night with her sacred hounds. inviting her protection, wisdom, and guidance inside.

This Hecate night why not do the same? Prepare your meal, host your feast with your fellow witches if you would like, make your heartfelt petition to her, and then go to your front door or a crossroads nearby. Make your invocation and petition for her to answer as she roams by this night. Tonight is a good time to ask for her assistance to release something from your life. Once you do then walk away from your plate without looking back. Encountering or hearing a dog is a good indication that your petition has been heard by Hecate and her sacred hounds and you will be getting an answer back.

The second part to this feast is the aspect of charity. Charity was important when honoring Hecate because she is commonly known for being the goddess to guide and protect those who are lost, down trodden, and consider themselves broken souls. So, don’t forget to make sure to find a way to help others in a charitable way. This doesn’t have to be humans either your acts of charity can extend to animals as well. Especially anything that involves dogs like taking in a stray, donating to a wildlife preserve, or donating your time and money to the ASPCA. This practice shows compassion for those whom she looks after the most and/or her sacred hounds.

The last part if you want to keep it as traditional as you can is the purification and cleansing of your home and spirit. Historically, people would fumigate or “smoke-cleanse” the doorstep where the offerings were left, after they’ve cleaned up the remnants. Along with cleansing their home and property as well. If you held your Hecate Night at the crossroads and only left biodegradable items, you can skip this step at your threshold. But, I still recommend to cleanse yourself and the space where you held your dinner at.

Other ways to connect to Hecate

Other than hosting a Hecate supper, leaving an offering at your threshold, and going to meet her and her hounds outside at a crossroads. Here are some other ways to work with Hecate for the next 24 hours for Hecate night and even beyond. Remember; it’s important to approach her with respect, reverence, gratitude and by building a relationship with her. Every time you work with a deity it is an even energetic exchange; which means what you put into your intention when working with them and building your relationship to them is what you get back.

Black Candle Protection Spell With Hecate

One of Hecate’s most revered qualities is her role as a protector. She is often invoked in spells and rituals when seeking to safeguard oneself or loved ones from harm, whether it be physical, emotional, or spiritual. Use this spell tonight to do just that.

What you will need:

  • A black candle
  • Oil of your choosing
  • A pin or something to carve with
  • A piece of black obsidian
  • garlic
  • mugwort
  • Lavender

How to perform spell:

First, once you have all of your supplies ready go ahead and get yourself into sacred container with your black candle sitting right in front of you. Focus on the situation or person you are seeking Hecate’s aid in protection from. Once you have the situation or person in your minds eye focus on the power of Hecate removing it from your life. Then with a deep breath take your pin and draw a symbol or sigil of Hecate into your candle while continuing to focus on what her aid and protection will feel like and bring. Next, take your herbs and mix them together and continue to focus on the sense of her protection. Once, they are mixed set them aside and grab your oil to anoint your candle. Once, your candle is covered in oil roll it in your herbs towards you calling Hecate’s protection to you and your life. Now, with your candle dressed in your oil and herbs set it back down in front of you. Focusing on the sigil/symbol you engraved into your candle light your black candle. As you light the black candle hold your piece of obsidian in your hand and focus on your intention of invoking Hecate’s protection. Visualize her presence surrounding you, a powerful goddess of the night, standing at the crossroads, holding torches that light your way. Say the following invocation or something similar that resonates with you:

“Hecate, goddess of the crossroads and queen of the night,

I call upon your power, your wisdom, your light.

Protect me now, as you’ve done before,

Shield me from harm, forevermore.

With this flame, I summon your might,

Keep me safe through the day and the night.”

Let the candle burn for at least 13 minutes or the rest of Hecate’s night as you envision a protective barrier forming around you. When you blow the candle out at the time that intuitively resonates with you, give thanks for Hecate’s fearsome protection she aided you with today. Then place the candle on your altar and come back and relight it at the next dark moon if you feel more protection from the situation or person is needed.

Orphic Hymn to Hekate (translated and sung by Melissaofthebees)

You can listen to it here!

I call Hekáte of the roadside, lovely god where three roads meet.

In sky, on earth, and in the ocean, yellow gown upon her form.

At tombs she celebrates the Bacchic rites with souls of those long dead.

Daughter of the Titan Persēs, fond of solitude and deer.

By night, protectress of the dogs, she is a most enchanting queen.

Barking dogs announce her passing. She’s unbound and fair of face.

On her head the bull-horn headdress, lady, priestess of the world.

Ruler, damsel, and our nursemaid, wandering the mountainsides.

With her worshippers, she’s present, maiden at the holy rites.

Always gracious when one worships with a god-like bull-horned zeal!

Refrain: I call Hekáte of the roadside, lovely god where three roads meet

How to know she is calling to you this Hecate’s night

I get asked this question every time I write or teach about a goddess. Remember, signs and messages appear in many different ways and are unique to the individual. It’s ultimately up to you to discern by opening up your clares, paying attention and listening to your intuition. Also, remember you can choose to work with her as well even if you don’t feel her calling to you. You can be the one to begin building that relationship by reaching out. Below is a list of some ways that you may know she is reaching out to you and beckoning you to meet her at the crossroads this Hecate night.

  • The number 13 keeps popping up everywhere
  • You hear dogs howling at night from nowhere
  • She shows up to you in your dreams
  • You keep finding yourself at either figurative or literal crossroads
  • Hecate’s symbols are repeating: the key, crossroads, torch, dagger, Hecate’s wheel
  • You’re drawn to graveyards and cemeteries
  • You are in a situation you are seeking protection from a person or situation
  • You’ve had a spiritual experience (either positive or terrifying) at a crossroads in the woods
  • You work with Persephone, Hades, or other deities of the Underworld
  • You’re new to the craft and need guidance but don’t know who to turn to
  • You are ready to break free from an unhealthy cycle
  • Hecate comes into witches’ lives who are pregnant and dying (during major transitions in life)
  • You’re seeing a white dog(s) everywhere you go (in real life or on TV, etc.)
  • The triple goddess moon symbol is showing up often in your life
  • Hecate’s name keeps showing up in your daily life (in random conversations, books, TV shows, online, etc.)
  • You love working with animals, in particular dogs
