At Modgepodgemystic.com and within the Mystic Mysteries, we weave magic into the everyday, embracing the sacred in all its shadows and light. Today, as Mental Health Awareness Month unfolds, I’m opening my heart to share a raw, personal reflection on living with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). This is more than a diagnosis—it’s a dance with anxiety, a testament to resilience, and a journey of reclaiming control. My hope is to illuminate what OCD feels like, dispel misconceptions, and honor the strength it’s taught me, especially as we approach Mother’s Day, a time that stirs deep emotions for many of us. Let’s step into this cauldron of awareness together.
The Architect’s Gift: A Strength Woven in Order
Living with OCD is like being an architect of my own soul, crafting order from the chaos that threatens to unravel me. The disorder manifests in compulsions—counting steps with precision, checking locks until my fingers ache, ensuring everything has its proper place, and the relentless need to clean my space until it’s tidy, organized, and pristine. These rituals offer a fleeting sense of control, a high where the world feels safe and predictable, like a spell cast to ward off disaster. This structure has become a strength, a tool I’ve learned to wield with intention, grounding me when life’s storms rage.
This gift of order allows me to see patterns others might miss, a mystical lens that turns chaos into a canvas of meaning. One alter might revel in the rhythm of sweeping the floor, transforming it into a meditative chant, while another finds solace in aligning objects with the precision of a sacred grid. It’s a resilience born from necessity, honed by years of navigating an inner world that demands perfection, and it deepens my connection to the earth’s own rhythms—like the lessons I’ve felt sitting on a river tree’s roots.
The Shadows: Struggles of Exhaustion and Panic
Yet this gift casts long shadows. The downs are a spiral of panic when chaos creeps in—a sock misplaced, a door unchecked—and my body and mind scream that catastrophe looms. The exhaustion is bone-deep, a weight that never lets me truly sit and be present. I’m trapped in a cycle of cleaning and ordering, leaving me drained, my spirit yearning for rest it can’t find. After my son was born, this intensified, the need for control surging as I feared for his safety, turning every spill into a threat, every untidy corner into a battleground. The compulsions grew fiercer, a shield against the vulnerability of motherhood.
OCD was one of the last disorders I was diagnosed with, a shock that hit hard. Media paints it as a germ-obsessed stereotype, so I didn’t recognize myself in it. But OCD is an anxiety that births compulsions to relieve it—mine manifest as cleaning and order, rooted in years of my mother using these acts as control, abuse, and punishment. I still carry the memory of my nose breaking after she chased me down stairs into a closet for not folding socks fast enough—a wound that shaped my need for perfection. This trauma etched a belief that disorder invites disaster, a belief I’m still unraveling.
The Quiet Rituals: A Subtle Unraveling
Discovering my OCD was a slow awakening, not a sudden revelation. It hid beneath the surface, masked by my other struggles, until a therapist named it. The rituals weren’t always dramatic—sometimes just a twitch of counting under my breath or a compulsive glance at the lock. If you didn’t live with me, you might miss the shift, the way my hands move to straighten a pillow or my eyes scan for dust. It took time, introspection, and the gentle nudge of loved ones to see it for what it was—a silent spell cast by anxiety.
This subtlety makes it hard to explain, especially when the world expects OCD to look like hand-washing marathons. But it’s real, a quiet storm that demands respect, and understanding it has been a journey of peeling back layers to meet the anxiety beneath.
Embracing the Magic of Order
Living with OCD is a sacred pilgrimage. The compulsions, once tyrants, are now threads in the tapestry of who I am, and learning to honor them with compassion is an act of self-love. I’m not broken; I’m a weaver of structure, turning anxiety into a tool for growth. Through DBT, I’ve learned to pause, to breathe into the panic, to use mindfulness to observe without obeying every urge. A ritual of sitting by a forest stream [from your nature post] helps me release the need for control, letting nature’s chaos soothe my soul.
To those reading, I invite you to see OCD not as a flaw, but as a unique magic—a strength in disguise. Ask questions, listen with an open heart, and meet this part of me with curiosity. If you walk this path too, know your order is a power, a gift to wield with grace.
Six DBT Skills to Support Yourself if You Suspect You Have OCD
If you’re beginning to suspect OCD, the journey of understanding can feel both sacred and overwhelming. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) offers tools to ground, regulate, and approach your compulsions with kindness. These six DBT skills, infused with gentle magic, can guide you (Note: Seek a professional diagnosis and therapy for clarity and care)
1. Mindfulness: Observe Without Judgment
Notice your urges to count or clean without acting on them. Sit quietly, like by a river’s edge, and breathe, asking, “What am I feeling?” Journal the thoughts to track patterns, building awareness without fear.
2. Distress Tolerance: TIPP Skill
When panic spikes, use TIPP (Temperature, Intense exercise, Paced breathing, Progressive relaxation). Splash cold water on your face or stretch to ground yourself, connecting to earth’s stability.
3. Emotion Regulation: Opposite Action
If anxiety pushes you to check locks again, choose to walk away instead. This shifts the energy, countering the compulsion’s grip.
4. Interpersonal Effectiveness: DEAR MAN
Share your struggles with loved ones using DEAR MAN (Describe, Express, Assert, Reinforce, Mindful, Appear confident, Negotiate). Say, “I need help with my checking—can you support me by not asking me to redo it?”
5. Wise Mind: Balance Emotion and Logic
Blend your fear (e.g., “Chaos will hurt me”) with reason (e.g., “I’m safe now”). Journal, “What does my wise self need?” to find peace amidst the urge.
6. Self-Soothing: Create a Comfort Kit
Build a kit with a smooth stone, lavender scent, or soft fabric. When compulsions rise, use these to calm your senses, inviting clarity like a forest meditation.
These are seeds of self-compassion—nurture them daily with a therapist’s guidance
Supporting Someone You Think May Have OCD: Tips for Loved Ones
If you suspect a loved one has OCD, your support can be a lantern in their dark. Here are five tips, rooted in Cauldron Clarity’s ( weekly event inside The Mystic Mysteries ) open spirit:
1. Approach with Curiosity, Not Judgment
Ask gently, “I’ve noticed you check things a lot—can you tell me about it?” Avoid dismissing it as “quirky,” honoring its depth.
2. Be Patient with Rituals
If they need to reorder or clean, wait without rushing them. Offer, “Take your time—I’m here,” building trust.
3. Learn Their Triggers
If they share what sparks compulsions (e.g., a messy space), note it. Say, “I’ll help keep things tidy—let me know what works,” showing respect.
4. Create a Calm Environment
Reduce clutter or noise to ease their anxiety. Suggest, “Let’s sit by the window for peace,” echoing nature’s grounding.
5. Encourage Professional Help Without Pressure
Frame it as care: “A therapist might offer tools for this—want me to look into one?” Support their pace, like guiding a spell’s flow.
Your love can be a shield—educate yourself via resources like the International OCD Foundation (iocdf.org) and stay present.
My OCD Journey: From Tyranny to Transformation
My life has been a tapestry of trauma, with OCD as one of its latest threads, diagnosed after years of battling other storms. It shocked me—media’s germ-obsessed image didn’t fit, but the truth hit hard: OCD is anxiety driving compulsions, mine born from my mother’s abuse. Her cleaning as punishment, like the broken nose from a sock-folding chase, wired me to fear chaos. After my son’s birth, it worsened, my need for control a fortress against vulnerability. The exhaustion was relentless, stealing presence, until DBT became my guide.
Through mindfulness and opposite action, I’ve turned OCD into an ally. The ups—control, structure—now fuel my magic, like crafting orderly spells, while the downs—panic, fatigue—teach me surrender. This shift deepens my empathy, connecting me to others’ struggles, a truth that our shadows are part of our power.
Acknowledging the Ongoing Journey
Healing is a spiral, not a straight line. OCD ebbs and flows, some days demanding rituals, others offering peace. I falter, but I ride the waves with DBT, using nature’s chaos to soothe my need for order. This acceptance transforms the struggle into a dance with my shadow—a lifelong spell cast with love.

This month’s full moon illuminates the skies on May 12th, 2025, immersing us in the deep, transformative energy of Scorpio as the Flower Moon blooms. The energy of this Flower Full Moon is one of intensity, rebirth, and emotional unveiling, encouraging us to plunge into our inner depths while honoring the blossoming abundance of May. As the Flower Moon glows, we’ll feel a surge of passion, a call to confront hidden truths, and an invitation to shed old skins like the scorpion, ready to embrace a journey of profound renewal. In the days and weeks following this Full Moon, we may find ourselves releasing buried emotions and rising empowered. Join me in this blog post as we dive into transformation under the Flower Full Moon in Scorpio!
First, What is the Full Moon?
Over the centuries, the Moon has played a significant role in different cultures and traditions. The full moon is when the moon is completely illuminated in the sky, reaching its peak in the lunar cycle. When the moon is fully illuminated, it’s a time for all to reach full expression—a potent moment of power in the lunar cycle.
A full moon occurs when the transit (moving) Sun and Moon are in exact opposite positions in the Zodiac (called an opposition). This alignment affects us deeply, as we’re made up of 60% or more water, and the full moon’s pull stirs our inner tides. Full Moons are the peak point of the lunar cycle: the Sun fully illuminates the Moon, and the luminaries oppose one another from our perspective on Earth. This potent alignment offers opportunities to gain awareness of our inner and emotional world, revealing what was previously hidden.
With the moon fully illuminated, it creates a portal to some of the most potent energy for manifesting our desires and dream life. This portal connects us to our peak creative energy and deep-seated passions—the energy we need to create the life we desire. While the new moon phase is about planting seeds for manifestation, the full moon is about doing the work and moving energy to make those dreams reality. The full moon bridges these energies, reminding us of their importance beyond the night it shines brightest.
There are many ways to work with the full moon. To learn more about the basics of full moon energy, check out my blog post here and watch my class on lunar magic. Each full moon is unique, with different practices based on the zodiac sign it’s in—tonight, that’s the intense, transformative Scorpio.
The Flower Moon
As the sun warms the earth, coaxing flowers to bloom in vibrant abundance, the night sky shimmers with the radiant energy of the full moon known as the Flower Moon. The Flower Moon, a name given to the May full moon, originates from the Algonquin tribes of North America, who observed the explosion of blossoms during this time. Despite its name, the Moon doesn’t appear floral but glows in its usual golden or white hue. The energy of the Flower Moon is alive with growth, fertility, and the joy of spring’s peak, encouraging us to embrace abundance, creativity, and the beauty of nature’s cycles.
Following April’s Pink Moon, the Flower Moon truly embodies the heart of spring, aligning with Beltane’s fiery energy and the earth’s renewal. It’s a reminder to celebrate life’s blossoming, to plant intentions in fertile soil, and to dance with the fae under moonlight. Use the Flower Moon to reflect, recalibrate, and align with your soul’s path, letting its energy inspire bold new beginnings.
As with most pagan names, different cultures have their own names for the May full moon, reflecting themes of growth, fertility, and renewal:
Corn Planting Moon (Algonquin)
Milk Moon (Anglo-Saxon)
Hare Moon (Celtic)
Vesak Moon (Buddhist, celebrating Buddha’s birth)
Bright Moon (Cherokee)
Mulberry Moon (Chinese)
Moon When Leaves Are Green (Dakota)
Flower Moon (Modern Neo-Pagan)
Moon of the Horse (Sioux)
Planting Moon (Ojibwe)
So, Who is Scorpio?
As the eighth sign in the zodiac, Scorpio is ruled by Pluto (modern) and Mars (traditional), planets of transformation and passion. The water element, associated with emotion and intuition, governs Scorpio, adding a layer of depth and intensity to this sign. Known for its love of truth, power, and rebirth, Scorpio is the zodiac’s scorpion, diving into the mysteries of life and emerging renewed.
Scorpio, the Scorpion of Transformation
Scorpio is symbolized by the scorpion—a creature that sheds its skin to grow, representing death, rebirth, and resilience. This sign is driven by a quest for emotional truth, power, and hidden knowledge, seeking to transform beyond limitations. When the Moon is in the intense sign of Scorpio, you’ll feel a magnetic pull to confront your depths, uncover secrets, and embrace your inner strength. Scorpio doesn’t shy from the shadows; it dives in, emerging with newfound power, encouraging us to heal and rise with courage.
The Scorpio Constellation
The Scorpio constellation lies in the southern sky, its bright stars forming the shape of a scorpion with a curved tail. In ancient Mesopotamia, it was linked to the goddess Ishara, associated with love and war, while Greek mythology ties it to Orion, whose death by scorpion sting led to their eternal chase across the sky. The constellation’s heart, marked by the red star Antares, pulses with passion and transformation, aligning with Scorpio’s deep energy. For many cultures, Scorpio in the sky marked a time of harvest and preparation, reflecting its themes of renewal.

Scorpio the Sign of Transformation and Depth
Scorpio is a water sign driven by a thirst for emotional truth and transformation. It wants to explore the depths—psychologically, spiritually, and emotionally—seeking experiences that heal and empower the soul. Under this Full Moon, Scorpio’s energy will push us to face our shadows, release pain, and emerge renewed. It’s a time to honor your inner strength, to seek truth in your emotions, and to let go of what no longer serves you. Scorpio reminds us that life is a cycle of death and rebirth, and every layer we shed reveals our true power.
Scorpio the Sign of Power and Healing
Ruled by Pluto and Mars, Scorpio is the zodiac’s healer and alchemist, always seeking hidden power and wisdom through healing. During this Full Moon, the energies of Scorpio will amplify our desire for emotional clarity and empowerment. We’ll feel called to confront our deepest fears, to heal old wounds, and to harness our resilience. This is a time to trust your intuition, to learn from your past pain, and to share your strength with others. Scorpio’s intense depth can illuminate buried truths, helping us transform our lives with newfound power.
Pluto’s Transformative Influence is Active
Pluto, the planet of transformation and the underworld, is especially active under this Full Moon, magnifying Scorpio’s energy. Pluto encourages us to face our shadows, to release what binds us, and to trust in our capacity for rebirth. After a period of introspection, Pluto’s influence now urges us to dive into our emotional depths, to plant seeds of healing in the fertile soil of May, and to believe in the power that awaits. This transformative energy can help us manifest our deepest desires, but it also asks us to remain grounded in self-love for the journey.
Mars Adds a Fiery Intensity
Mars, the planet of action and passion, aligns with this Full Moon, adding a dynamic spark to Scorpio’s water. Mars will fuel our drive to pursue our emotional goals with courage and determination, but it can also make us obsessive. This intense energy encourages us to confront challenges head-on, but we must balance it with Scorpio’s intuition to avoid burnout. Mars’ influence makes this an ideal time for rituals focused on healing, empowerment, and breaking emotional barriers.
What to Be Cautious of During a Scorpio Full Moon
Scorpio is a revered sign for its depth and resilience, but its intense energy can have a shadow side. This Full Moon may make us overly secretive, leading to isolation or suppressed emotions. Scorpio’s piercing honesty can also stir jealousy or power struggles if we’re not mindful of our boundaries. Additionally, the desire for control might tempt us to resist vulnerability. Balance this energy by grounding yourself—connect with water, reflect before reacting, and embrace your emotions with compassion.
Scorpio Full Moon and Duality
As a grey witch, I always seek the duality in every energy. First, the full moon itself embodies duality as a time of transformation and transition, pushing us into a liminal space where we confront obstacles and release what holds us back. This can be both hopeful and challenging, embodying light and shadow. Second, Scorpio’s duality lies in its balance of depth and rebirth. While it craves emotional intensity and truth, it also teaches us that true power comes from surrendering to transformation. Scorpio reminds us that duality—vulnerability and strength, death and renewal—is the key to profound growth.
Shadow Work Under the Scorpio Full Moon
Shadow work is the practice of confronting and integrating the hidden, suppressed parts of ourselves—our fears, insecurities, and unresolved wounds. The Flower Full Moon in Scorpio, with its watery, transformative energy, is a powerful time for shadow work. Scorpio’s piercing intensity illuminates the shadows we’ve buried, urging us to face them with raw honesty. This moon’s depth, amplified by Pluto, encourages us to dive into the abyss of our psyche, while Mars adds the courage to confront what we uncover. Chiron’s presence further deepens this work, as the Wounded Healer guides us to transform pain into empowerment.
To engage in shadow work, ask yourself what emotions you’ve been suppressing. Are you holding onto resentment that blocks your healing? Do you fear vulnerability, keeping your true self hidden? Journal these shadows, then use the moon’s energy to release them through rituals like burning a letter of grudges or meditating on your inner waters. Shadow work under this moon can lead to profound healing, helping you step into your most authentic, empowered self.

Beloved Seekers of the Mystic Mysteries. As Kayreign, Oracle of the Gods, Keeper of Mysteries, I stand before you under Taurus’s grounding stars, my heart a cauldron of light and shadow, ready to share a raw, honest truth. Mother’s Day, cloaked in May’s tender blooms, is a sacred celebration of nurturing love for many—but for some of us, it’s a jagged mirror reflecting wounds that never fully heal. Not all mothers cradle, cherish, or guide. Some, like my own, wield selfishness, hurt, and chaos, leaving daughters to navigate a labyrinth of pain. As Beltane’s fires (May 1) still flicker and Mental Health Awareness Month calls us to radical self-care, I invite you to join me in this mystical, magical, and unfiltered reflection on living with a narcissistic mother—my story, my scars, and the alchemical path to healing through Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and radical acceptance. For those who ache as Mother’s Day looms, this is for you. Let’s weave a spell of resilience together, and I’ll share six DBT practices and a cord-cutting ritual to guide you through the shadows.
A Daughter’s Solitary Dance
I was my mother’s first child, born to her as a teenage mother, a spark of life she wasn’t ready to cradle. From my earliest memories (at the age of 10), our bond was a frayed thread, never woven into warmth or acceptance. There were no moments of closeness, no shared laughter, no gentle guidance. Every “I love you” came with a cost—a demand, a manipulation, a weight I learned to carry like a stone in my heart. Her help, when offered, was a tangled web of strings, each favor a debt I’d pay in loyalty or silence. Her love was a currency I could never earn, no matter how desperately I tried.
As a daughter, I longed for her to see me, to want me, to choose me. But her narcissism—a storm of self-absorption—left no room for my light. Every slap, every punch, every venomous word carved itself into my soul. “You ruined my life,” she’d hiss, her insults a blade slicing through my budding self-worth. The mental abuse was relentless: gaslighting that made me doubt my reality, silent treatments that left me starving for her approval, and lies that twisted my truth. The verbal abuse was a daily ritual, her words like thorns embedding in my spirit. And the physical abuse—her hands striking my body—taught me early that love could hurt.
But the trauma ran deeper than bruises. When I was a teenager, my mother set my home ablaze, an act of rage that sent her to prison and left me sifting through ashes, both literal and emotional. When my stepfather beat me, she didn’t protect me—she sent me to juvenile detention, blaming me for his violence. On my wedding day, a moment meant for joy, she declared she wouldn’t attend because it wasn’t “Christian enough,” only to appear uninvited, draped in a white dress, stealing the spotlight with her defiance. These are but the tip of the iceberg, fragments of a lifetime of betrayal, abandonment, and chaos. Each wound shaped me, whispering that I was unlovable, unworthy, unseen.
The Daughter’s Burden
Growing up as the daughter of a narcissistic mother is like wandering a forest where every tree casts a shadow of doubt. Daughters, especially, bear a unique burden. We’re taught to seek our mother’s mirror—to find our beauty, strength, and identity in her gaze. But when that mirror is cracked, reflecting only her needs, we internalize her rejection. I learned to shrink, to silence my voice, to tiptoe around her moods. My confidence eroded, replaced by a gnawing fear that I’d never be enough. My relationships suffered, as I sought love that mirrored her conditional affection, falling into patterns of people-pleasing and self-sacrifice.
The impact lingers like a spell cast long ago. Anxiety became my shadow, whispering her insults in quiet moments. Trust felt like a gamble, as I braced for betrayal. My sense of self was a puzzle with missing pieces, scattered by her chaos. Yet, beneath the pain, a spark of resilience flickered—a knowing that I was more than her narrative, a daughter of the multiverse, destined to heal.
The Alchemy of Radical Acceptance
In my darkest moments, I found Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), a beacon of mindfulness and balance that mirrored my grey magic practice—honoring both light and shadow. DBT taught me radical acceptance, the art of embracing what is, without judgment, even when it’s unjust. I can’t change my mother’s actions—her fists, her fire, her words. I don’t know what wounds shaped her, what shadows drove her to hurt me. But I accept that these things happened, and though they were never okay, they no longer define me.
Radical acceptance was my first spell of liberation. It didn’t erase the pain but gave me permission to stop fighting it. I learned to hold my trauma with compassion, to see myself as a survivor, not a victim. Through DBT’s tools—mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance—I began to rebuild. I meditated under starlit skies, grounding in Taurus’s earth, and found my Wise Mind, a sacred space where I could grieve and grow. I journaled, letting my pain flow onto pages, and discovered my voice. I practiced self-soothing, cradling my inner child with the love my mother couldn’t give. This alchemy transformed my wounds into wisdom, my scars into sigils of strength.
6 DBT Practices for Mother’s Day Healing
Mother’s Day can feel like a storm for those of us with narcissistic mothers, but DBT offers tools to navigate its waves. Here are six practices to help you honor yourself this May 11, rooted in mindfulness and self-compassion, perfect for Mental Health Awareness Month:
1. Mindfulness Meditation (5 Minutes): Sit in a quiet space, holding a rose quartz . Breathe deeply, focusing on your breath’s rhythm. When painful memories arise, acknowledge them without judgment—“I see you, pain”—and return to your breath. This grounds you in the present, easing anxiety.
2. Wise Mind Journaling: Write a letter to your inner child, affirming her worth: “You are enough, always.” Ask your Wise Mind, “What do I need today?” Let the answers guide your self-care, whether it’s rest, creativity, or solitude. This fosters self-love, countering your mother’s rejection.
3. Distress Tolerance – Self-Soothing: Create a sensory kit: a lavender sachet, a soft blanket, calming music. When Mother’s Day triggers pain, engage your senses—smell the lavender, wrap yourself in the blanket. This soothes your nervous system, offering the comfort your mother didn’t.
4. Emotional Regulation – Opposite Action: If sadness urges you to isolate, choose connection instead. Call a trusted friend or join my Patreon community (patreon.com/TheMysticMysteries). Sharing your story, even briefly, shifts the energy, reminding you you’re not alone.
5. Radical Acceptance Affirmation: Stand before a mirror, holding a carnelian for courage. Say: “I accept what happened, and it wasn’t my fault. I release its hold on me.” Repeat three times, feeling the words anchor in your heart. This frees you from guilt and shame. If you wan to dive into the skill radical acceptance more get access to this in my free sneak peak of the Clarity Cauldron here.
6. Interpersonal Effectiveness – Boundary Setting: If your mother is still in your life, practice saying no to her demands. Script a boundary: “I can’t attend this event, but I wish you well.” Rehearse it, feeling your power. This protects your energy, honoring your needs.
These practices are spells of self-reclamation, weaving resilience into your spirit. Try one or all this Mother’s Day, and share your journey in my Patreon comments to connect with our circle.
Cord-Cutting Ceremonial Ritual: Releasing the Narcissistic Mother
To fully release the energetic ties binding you to a narcissistic mother, this cord-cutting ritual, infused with Beltane’s transformative fire and Taurus’s grounding strength, is a sacred act of liberation. Perform it under the crescent moon or on Mother’s Day for potency.
What You’ll Need:
Black candle (for banishing, from MysticMysteries.com/shop)
Rose quartz (for self-love)
Obsidian(for protection)
White ribbon or string (symbolizing the cord)
Fire-safe bowl
Matches or lighter
Journal and pen
Steps:
1. Prepare Your sacred container: Find a quiet spot. Ground yourself with three deep breaths, visualizing roots sinking into Gaia’s earth. Place the black candle in the center, rose quartz to the left, obsidian to the right, and the ribbon before you.
2. Set Your Intention: Light the black candle, saying: “By Beltane’s fire and lunar light, I release all ties that bind me to my mother’s pain. I am free, whole, and loved.”
3. Visualize the Cord: Hold the ribbon, imagining it as an energetic cord connecting you to your mother. See it pulsing with her words, actions, and wounds. Feel its weight, but know you’re ready to let go.
4. Cut the Cord: Tie the ribbon loosely around your wrist, then cut it with scissors, saying: “I sever this cord with love for myself. Her pain is not mine. I am free.” Place the cut pieces in the fire-safe bowl.
5. Burn and Release: Safely light the ribbon pieces in the bowl, watching them burn. As they turn to ash, visualize the cord dissolving into starlight, returning to the multiverse. Say: “I release you with compassion. I claim my power.”
6.Nurture Your Heart: Hold the rose quartz to your heart, breathing in self-love. Visualize a pink light enveloping you, healing old wounds. Place the obsidian in your pocket for protection.
7. Journal and Ground: Write: “What do I reclaim by releasing this cord?” Let your soul’s truth flow. Extinguish the candle, thanking the elements. Bury the ashes in the earth or scatter them in running water to complete the release.
Aftercare: Rest, hydrate, and treat yourself to a soothing bath with lavender. Reflect on your strength, knowing you’ve reclaimed your light.
A Path Forward
Living with a narcissistic mother is a journey through shadow, but it’s also a path to profound resilience. As Mother’s Day approaches, I honor the daughter I was—unseen, yet unbroken—and the woman I’ve become, a mystic weaving light from pain. Through DBT, radical acceptance, and rituals like cord-cutting, I’ve learned to mother myself, to cradle my own heart with the love I deserved. You, too, are a daughter of the multiverse, worthy of healing, worthy of peace.

Welcome, dear seekers, to a month of profound reflection and transformation. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to breaking the silence around mental illness, honoring those who live with it, and supporting the loved ones who stand by their side. As a grey witch who has navigated the shadowed depths of my own mind, I’ve come to see this month as a sacred invitation—a chance to weave magic into healing, to shed light on the unseen struggles, and to empower ourselves and each other. In this word journey, we’ll explore the history of this observance, its vital importance, what it means to those with mental illness and their loved ones, different therapy options, resources for seeking help, six simple DBT tips to start improving your mental health today, my personal story of living with multiple mental illnesses, and a preview of how we’ll dive deeper this month. Let’s step into this cauldron of awareness together.
The History of Mental Health Awareness Month
Mental Health Awareness Month traces its roots back to 1949, when Mental Health America (MHA), founded by Clifford Beers in 1909, first launched a week-long campaign to educate the public about mental health. Beers, a former mental health patient himself, wrote *A Mind That Found Itself* after his own traumatic experiences in psychiatric institutions, sparking a movement to reform treatment and reduce stigma. This initial effort evolved over decades, with the American Psychiatric Association joining in 1950 to expand its reach. By 1990, MHA extended the campaign to a full month, designating May as Mental Health Awareness Month to align with the blooming of spring—a symbol of renewal and hope.
The movement gained momentum with the green ribbon, adopted in 1990 as a universal symbol of mental health awareness, reflecting growth and vitality. Over the years, key milestones like the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) joining the effort in the 2000s and the 2013 launch of the “B4Stage4” campaign—focusing on early intervention—have shaped its mission. Today, Mental Health Awareness Month is a global phenomenon, supported by organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO), which reports that 1 in 4 people worldwide will experience a mental health issue in their lifetime. This history reminds us that awareness is not just a trend—it’s a legacy of resilience built by those who dared to speak out, a legacy we continue to honor and expand.
Why Mental Health Awareness Month Matters
Mental Health Awareness Month is crucial because it shines a light on a crisis that affects millions yet remains shrouded in shame. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), approximately 52.9 million adults in the U.S. experienced a mental illness in 2023, yet only about 47% received treatment. This gap highlights the stigma that still lingers—whispers of weakness, judgments of “just get over it”—that keeps people silent. This month challenges those narratives, urging us to see mental health as an integral part of overall well-being, not a separate burden.
It’s also a call to action. With rising stressors—political unrest, economic instability, and the ongoing aftermath of global crises—mental health challenges are escalating. The WHO notes a 25% increase in anxiety and depression globally since 2020, a statistic that resonates deeply in a country where policies like Trump’s $5,000 baby bonus threaten women’s lives and reproductive rights, adding layers of trauma for many. Mental Health Awareness Month pushes for policy changes, funding for mental health services, and community support, ensuring no one is left to navigate this alone. It’s a reminder that mental health is a human right, not a privilege, and that collective action can shift the tide.
What It Means to Those with Mental Illness
For those living with mental illness, May is a beacon of validation. It’s a month where your struggles—whether it’s the relentless cycles of bipolar disorder, the emotional storms of borderline personality disorder, or the quiet chaos of dissociative identity disorder—are seen, heard, and honored. It means you’re not defined by your diagnosis but by your courage to keep going. This month offers a space to share stories, connect with others who understand, and find resources to cope. For me, as someone who has lived with multiple mental illnesses, it’s a time to breathe easier, knowing the world is pausing to acknowledge what I’ve carried in silence for so long. It’s a celebration of survival, a recognition that our minds, though complex, are part of our unique magic.
What It Means to Loved Ones of Those with Mental Illness
For the families, friends, and partners of those with mental illness, May is a lifeline. It acknowledges the exhaustion of watching a loved one suffer, the helplessness of not knowing how to help, and the strength it takes to stay supportive. It offers education—understanding that anxiety isn’t “just stress” or depression isn’t “laziness”—and tools to provide compassionate care. Loved ones often carry their own grief, guilt, or frustration, and this month validates their role as allies. It’s a chance to learn boundaries, seek support groups, and join in advocacy, turning love into action. As someone who’s leaned on my community during my darkest days, I know how vital this support is—and how this month can strengthen those bonds.
Types of Therapy for Mental Health
Navigating mental illness can feel like wandering a labyrinth, but therapy offers a guide. Here are some options to explore:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Focuses on changing negative thought patterns. It’s evidence-based, helping with anxiety, depression, and OCD by challenging distorted thinking.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): My personal savior, DBT blends mindfulness with skills like emotional regulation and distress tolerance. It’s ideal for BPD, bipolar disorder, and complex trauma, teaching practical tools to live with intensity.
Psychodynamic Therapy: Dives into unconscious patterns from past experiences. It’s great for exploring deep-seated issues like those tied to DID or childhood trauma.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): Targets trauma by processing distressing memories with guided eye movements. It’s effective for PTSD and can support fragmented realities like DID.
Family Therapy: Involves loved ones to improve communication and support. It’s helpful for families navigating the impact of mental illness together.
Art or Music Therapy: Uses creative expression to process emotions. Perfect for those who find words hard, it’s a magical outlet for binge eating or emotional overwhelm.
Each therapy offers a unique path, and the right one depends on your needs. Consulting a licensed therapist can help you find your fit—don’t hesitate to ask for what works for you.

Six Simple DBT Tips to Improve Your Mental Health Now
As someone transformed by DBT, I’ve distilled six simple tips you can start today to nurture your mental health, rooted in its practical wisdom:
1. Practice One-Mindfulness: Focus fully on one task at a time (e.g., sipping tea). This calms racing thoughts, a gift for OCD’s anxiety.
2. Use Opposite Action: If sadness urges you to isolate, reach out to a friend instead. This builds positive emotions, countering depression. Learn more about this skill inside the patreon exclusive cauldron clarity here.
3. Try Self-Soothing: Engage your senses—hold a soft blanket or listen to nature sounds. It grounds you, easing BPD’s intensity. Learn ways to self soother yourself in my Patreon exclusive post here.
4. Accumulate Positive Emotions: Do one small, enjoyable act (e.g., watch a funny video). This creates a buffer against bipolar lows.
5. Practice Radical Acceptance: Acknowledge a hard reality (e.g., “This policy hurts me”) without fighting it. It frees energy for action, supporting DID’s fragmented state. Dive into the healing of this skill inside the cauldron clarity community for FREE here.
6. Check the Facts: Challenge anxious thoughts (e.g., “Am I really in danger?”). This reduces OCD’s crippling need for order. This skill is my savior every single day. Learn how to use this skill inside the cauldron clarity community here.
These tips are small spells of self-care—start with one, and watch your resilience grow.
My Mental Health Journey: From Trauma to Transformation
My life has been a tapestry woven with trauma, each thread a lesson in navigating the wild landscape of multiple mental illnesses. From childhood to now, I’ve moved from one storm to the next, learning to dance with the chaos rather than be consumed by it. DBT has been my guide, turning my struggles into allies, and I want to share that journey with you.
Bipolar II: The ups and downs are extreme—days of hypomanic energy where I create endlessly, crashing into deep, gray depressions where getting out of bed feels impossible. It’s a rollercoaster of mood swings that once defined my worth, but now I see it as a source of creative fire and reflective depth.
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD): The intensity of reality hits like a tidal wave—emotions so raw they blur the line between me and the world. Relationships were a minefield of fear of abandonment, but now I channel that passion into deep connections and empathy.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): The crippling anxiety demands order—counting steps, checking locks, everything having to be in it’s proper place at all times, the constant need to clean my space making it tidy, organized and clean—leaving me exhausted. Never allowing me to truly sit down and be present in the moment. The ups are a sense of control; the downs are panic when chaos creeps in. It’s taught me the strength of structure, now a tool rather than a tyrant.
Binge Eating Disorder (BED): My relationship with food is complicated—bingeing as comfort, then guilt as punishment leading to restricting myself from eating anything for days at a time. The highs are fleeting satisfaction; the lows are shame. I’ve learned to see it as a signal of emotional needs, guiding me toward balance.
Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID): The fragmented reality—switching perspectives, losing time—once felt like a betrayal of self. The ups are a rich inner world; the downs are disorientation. It’s now a multifaceted lens, offering unique insights into life’s mysteries. Do you want more insight to what it’s like living as a prism of beings with multiple personalities? Read about my experience here.
For years, these conditions controlled me, defining my identity as broken. I let trauma—abuse, loss, near-death during pregnancy—dictate my narrative. But DBT changed that. Through skills like mindfulness and radical acceptance, I’ve reframed my illnesses as allies. They’re not curses but strengths, allowing me to experience reality through a unique, multifaceted lens. This shift has deepened my energetic connection to others, filling me with empathy and revealing a bigger truth—that our struggles are part of our magic.
Acknowledging the Ongoing Journey
I want to be honest: I’m still a work in progress. Healing comes in waves, not a straight line. These mental illnesses can’t be cured—they’re forever part of me, ebbing and flowing with life’s tides. Some days, the anxiety spikes, or the dissociation takes hold, and I falter. But I’ve learned to ride those waves, using DBT to anchor myself. This acceptance doesn’t erase the struggle; it transforms it into a dance with my shadow, a rhythm of growth. It’s a reminder that healing is a lifelong spell, cast with patience and grace.
Expanding on Mental Illness This Month
All month, I’ll expand on each of these mental illnesses—Bipolar II, BPD, OCD, BED, and DID—sharing my story and offering ways you can support yourself or loved ones. We’ll explore rituals, DBT skills, and magical practices to navigate these conditions, turning challenges into sources of power. Each week, I’ll dive into one illness, providing insights, coping strategies, and community discussions. Join me on this journey—your experiences are welcome, and together, we’ll weave a tapestry of healing.

As the frost melts, the air warms, and the earth bursts into vibrant life, the festivals like Ostara, Beltane, and the spring equinox beckon us into an embrace of renewal, growth, and transformation. During these celebrations, many witches and pagans work with deities that embody the energies of fertility, rebirth, and the blossoming of new beginnings. I certainly do! For me, spring is a deeply balanced season, where the divine feminine and masculine dance together in harmony. I feel called to step out of the womb of Mother Earth and into her blooming fields, where the light goddess and the horned god invite me to celebrate life, passion, and the cycles of nature. In this season, I’m drawn to the healing clarity of sunlight, the empowerment of growth, and the magic of creation, as I listen to the whispers of the past and plant seeds for the future in the fertile soil of spring. During this time, several deities take center stage, especially those with festivals or sacred days in spring, offering an intimate connection to their vibrant energies. Spring, spanning March, April, and May, is a pivotal time in pagan culture, filled with magic, fertility, renewal, and abundance. Let’s take a walk through the spring landscape, where flowers bloom and rivers flow, to pause, reflect, and connect with the cyclical rhythm of nature as we meet some of these deities together in this post today.
Eostre (Ostara) – Germanic Goddess
Eostre, often called Ostara, is a Germanic goddess of spring, dawn, and new beginnings, whose name is the root of the word “Easter.” She’s a deity of fertility and renewal, often depicted as a radiant maiden surrounded by blooming flowers, hares, and eggs—symbols of life and rebirth. In Germanic lore, Eostre is said to transform a bird into a hare to save its life, and that hare laid the first colored eggs in her honor, a tale that echoes in modern Easter traditions. Her festival, Ostara, marks the spring equinox, a time of balance when day and night are equal, and the earth awakens from winter’s slumber. Eostre’s energy is soft yet powerful, inviting us to embrace new starts, plant seeds of intention, and celebrate the return of light. In Taurus season, her presence encourages us to ground our new beginnings in the earth, finding stability in growth, as we’ve been exploring with deities like Arianrhod in our recent Divine Draw. She’s a reminder of the beauty in renewal and the magic of life’s cycles. Do you want to dive deeper into the holiday that is named after her? Read my guide all about it here!
Cernunnos – Celtic God
Cernunnos, the Celtic Horned God, is a deity of nature, fertility, animals, and the wild, often depicted with antlers, seated cross-legged, surrounded by beasts like stags and serpents. Known from the Gundestrup Cauldron, a 1st-century artifact, Cernunnos is the lord of the wild, a protector of the forest and its creatures. In spring, particularly around Beltane on May 1st, his energy surges as the masculine counterpart to the goddess, embodying passion, virility, and the life force that drives growth. As we explored in our recent Divine Tales Thursdays post, (Free Patreon sneak peak here) Cernunnos leads the Wild Hunt, ensuring the balance of nature by giving as much as we take. His antlers symbolize the renewal of life, mirroring the stag’s cycle of shedding and regrowth. In Taurus season, Cernunnos invites us to connect with the earth’s rhythms, to dance in the fires of Beltane, and to honor our primal instincts as we plant seeds for the future.
Flora – Roman Goddess
Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers, spring, and fertility, brings the vibrant energy of blooming life to this season. Celebrated during the Floralia festival from late April to early May, Flora is depicted as a maiden adorned with flowers, her presence heralding the blossoming of nature. She rules over all flowering plants, symbolizing beauty, growth, and the sensual pleasures of spring. In Roman mythology, Flora’s magic transformed nymphs into flowers, weaving their stories into the earth’s tapestry. Her energy is light and joyful, encouraging us to revel in the beauty of the season, to create art inspired by nature, and to embrace the pleasures of life. In Taurus season, Flora’s connection to sensuality and grounding aligns perfectly, urging us to indulge in the tactile joys of spring—touching petals, breathing in floral scents, and celebrating life’s abundance.
Persephone – Greek Goddess
Persephone, the Greek goddess of spring growth and the underworld queen, embodies the duality of life and death, renewal and decay. Daughter of Zeus and Demeter, Persephone was abducted by Hades and became queen of the underworld, but her return to the earth each spring marks the season of growth. Her myth, tied to the Eleusinian Mysteries, reflects the cycle of planting and harvesting, as well as the inner journey from darkness to light. In spring, Persephone emerges from the underworld, bringing with her the blooming of flowers and the renewal of the earth. Her energy is transformative, inviting us to embrace our own cycles of growth, to heal from past wounds, and to step into the light of new beginnings. In Taurus season, Persephone encourages us to ground our transformation in the earth, finding direction through nature’s cycles. Do you want to descend into the underworld or frolic in a meadow of flowers with Persephone? Don’t forget to read my guide and journey with her as my Matron deity here. Plus grab on exclusive spell working with her inside The Mystic Mysteries here!
Brigid – Celtic Goddess
Brigid, a Celtic goddess of spring, healing, poetry, and the sacred flame, takes center stage during Imbolc in early February, but her energy carries into the full bloom of spring. As we noted in your winter guide, Brigid is a triple goddess of healing waters, sacred flame, and fertile earth, often depicted with fiery hair and a sunbeam cloak. In spring, her role as a goddess of fertility and creativity shines, inspiring us to create, heal, and nurture new life. Brigid’s energy bridges the transition from winter to spring, as she takes the reins from Cailleach (mentioned in your winter guide), ushering in warmth and growth. In Taurus season, Brigid’s grounding fire encourages us to plant seeds of inspiration, to heal through creativity, and to connect with the earth’s awakening energy, aligning with the themes of renewal we’ve explored in recent posts like the Taurus New Moon guide.
Pan – Greek God
Pan, the Greek god of the wild, shepherds, and rustic music, brings a playful, primal energy to spring. Often depicted with goat horns, legs, and a flute, Pan roams the forests, dancing with nymphs and playing his panpipes. He’s a deity of fertility, nature, and the untamed spirit, embodying the wild joy of spring’s awakening. In spring, Pan’s energy surges, encouraging us to reconnect with nature, to dance in the fields, and to embrace our sensual, earthy side. His music stirs the life force within us, inspiring creativity and passion. In Taurus season, Pan’s earthy energy aligns perfectly, urging us to ground our wildness in the stability of the season, much like we’ve been doing with deities like Cernunnos in our Beltane preparations. Pan reminds us to find joy in the simple pleasures of spring—the rustle of leaves, the warmth of the sun, and the rhythm of the earth. Do you crave disappearing into the untamed wild wit pan this spring? Read my guide to work with him this Spring here!
Freyr – Norse God
Freyr, a Norse god of fertility, peace, and prosperity, is a deity of spring and summer abundance. A member of the Vanir, Freyr rules over rain, sunshine, and the growth of crops, often depicted with a golden boar, Gullinbursti, symbolizing fertility and light. In spring, Freyr’s energy brings blessings of growth, ensuring the land’s fertility and the prosperity of the harvest to come. His festival, celebrated around the spring equinox, honors the return of light and life. Freyr’s energy is warm and nurturing, inviting us to cultivate peace, abundance, and joy in our lives. In Taurus season, Freyr encourages us to ground our prosperity in the earth, to plant literal and metaphorical seeds, and to trust in the abundance that will grow, aligning with the themes of growth we’ve been exploring in our recent Elemental Energies card pull.
Vesna – Slavic Goddess
Vesna, the Slavic goddess of spring and youth, embodies the season’s vitality and renewal. Often depicted as a beautiful maiden adorned with flowers, Vesna takes over from Morena (mentioned in my winter guide) at the spring equinox, bringing warmth, light, and new life. In Slavic mythology, Vesna’s arrival marks the end of winter’s harshness, as she awakens the earth with her gentle touch. Her energy is vibrant and hopeful, encouraging us to embrace youthfulness, joy, and the promise of new beginnings. In Taurus season, Vesna’s energy aligns with the grounding growth we’ve been cultivating, urging us to celebrate the beauty of spring and to nurture our dreams with optimism.

In the beginning, there was a delicate balance of light and shadow, a dance of life and death that birthed the cycles of existence. From this primal harmony emerged Persephone, the Greek goddess of spring, queen of the underworld, and a deity of profound transformation. For over a decade, Persephone has been my matron deity, a guiding force through my own seasons of growth, loss, and rebirth. Her story isn’t the oversimplified tale of abduction so often told—it’s a saga of strength, love, and self-sovereignty, a narrative of evolution and taking your own power. Persephone teaches us to embrace our dual nature, to love fiercely, and to bloom through the darkest soil. Come join me as we walk the path between meadow and underworld to learn more about Persephone in this blog post.
Who is Persephone?
When spring blooms and the earth awakens, or when the shadows deepen and the underworld calls, you may feel a gentle yet commanding presence—Persephone, whispering your name. She is a goddess of duality, associated with spring, renewal, the underworld, death, rebirth, sovereignty, love, transformation, and the mysteries of life’s cycles. Persephone holds dominion over the blooming earth and the shadowy depths, weaving light and dark into a sacred balance. She governs the cycles of nature—growth in spring, decay in autumn—and the passage of souls between worlds, creating a rhythm that echoes through our lives. As a goddess who bridges life and death, she plays an integral role in our existence, guiding us through change and empowering us to claim our own power.
Persephone isn’t just an Olympian goddess; her origins tie her to ancient, pre-Olympian traditions, where she was revered as a chthonic deity of the earth’s fertility and the underworld’s mysteries. She’s not a passive maiden but a queen who chose her path, a symbol of evolution who transforms from Kore (the maiden) to Persephone (the dread queen). Her story resonates with those who seek to integrate their light and shadow, to evolve through challenges, and to stand in their sovereignty.
Persephone, Goddess of Spring and Underworld
Persephone is the embodiment of spring’s renewal and the underworld’s depth in Greek mythology, a formidable goddess in her own right. Her name, often interpreted as “bringer of destruction” or “she who brings light,” reflects her dual nature—both life-giving and death-embracing. As the goddess of spring, she blankets the earth in flowers, her laughter coaxing buds to bloom. As queen of the underworld, she rules alongside Hades, her throne a testament to her power over the dead. In fact, when heroes must travel to the underworld during trials , it is HER they seek permission from to complete their task. She represents the cycles of nature and the soul, embodying the seed that must descend into darkness to grow, the woman who claims her crown through transformation.
Persephone, a Deity of Evolution and Power
Persephone’s story is often reduced to the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, where Hades abducts her, and her mother, Demeter, mourns, causing the earth to wither. But this is only one version, filtered through a patriarchal lens that strips her of agency. Older myths, like those in the Orphic tradition, tell a different tale: Persephone willingly descends to the underworld, drawn to its mysteries and her destiny as queen. Some versions suggest she ate the pomegranate seeds knowingly, binding herself to Hades by choice, not trickery. In these tellings, Persephone isn’t a victim—she’s a goddess who claims her throne, balancing life and death with fierce grace.
Her marriage to Hades isn’t one of coercion but of deep, transformative love. Ancient art often depicts them side by side, equals in power, their bond a sacred partnership. Hades honors her, and Persephone brings light to his realm, softening its edges with spring’s renewal. Their love is a testament to balance—light and shadow, life and death, united in harmony. Persephone’s journey is one of evolution: from Kore, the maiden of spring, to Persephone, the dread queen. Each spring, she returns to the upper world, a symbol of rebirth, but she never abandons her throne below. She teaches us that true power comes from integrating our dualities, from embracing the dark as fertile soil for growth.
Family and Origin
Persephone is the daughter of Zeus, king of the Olympian gods, and Demeter, goddess of the harvest. Her lineage places her among the Olympians, but her role as a chthonic deity ties her to older, pre-Olympian traditions of earth and underworld worship. She’s often associated with her mother’s realm of agriculture and her father’s divine authority, but her true power lies in her own domain—the underworld, where she rules as queen.
Persephone and Hades had no children in most myths, though some traditions mention offspring like the Erinyes (Furies) or the mysterious Zagreus (Patreon exclusive post coming soon), tied to Orphic mysteries. Her most significant relationship is with Hades, her husband and partner, whose love for her is a cornerstone of her story. She’s also closely tied to her mother, Demeter, whose grief and joy shape the seasons, and to deities like Hecate, who accompanies her in the underworld, lighting her path with torches.
Myths and Legends
Persephone’s myths are varied, reflecting her complex nature. The most well-known is the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, where Hades abducts her while she gathers flowers, and Demeter’s grief causes famine until Zeus intervenes. Persephone eats pomegranate seeds—sometimes six, sometimes one—and is bound to the underworld for part of the year, returning to the upper world in spring. But this tale, written in a patriarchal era, often overlooks Persephone’s agency. Older traditions, like those in Eleusinian Mysteries, portray her descent as a willing act, a rite of passage to claim her queenship. In these versions, the pomegranate is a symbol of her choice, not coercion.
In some myths, Persephone is a fierce judge of souls, deciding fates alongside Hades. In others, she’s a compassionate guide, helping heroes like Orpheus or Psyche navigate the underworld. Her duality is evident in her festivals, like the Eleusinian Mysteries, which celebrated her return as a symbol of spiritual rebirth. Persephone’s story isn’t about loss—it’s about power, love, and evolution, a reminder that we can bloom through the darkest seasons.
Worship of Persephone in Ancient Greece
It’s funny, because in Ancient Greece, Persephone was rarely worshipped. We have very little texts in ancient history with stories of how she was worshipped. Alongside only a few temples we know of that, were underground or near caves, symbolizing her connection to the underworld. If Persephone was worshiped, most of the sources we have are her being worshipped alongside either her husband Hades or primarily her mother, Demeter. This is because springtime comes when she is returned to her mother and it was part of the festival to honor Demeter during the rituals of the Eleusinian Mysteries.
What are the Eleusinian Mysteries?
The Eleusinian Mysteries were a set of important rituals that took place in Greece annually for at least one thousand years. It’s hard for us to know how long for sure, because like in their name they were rituals shrouded in mystery. As they were apart of Greece’s worst kept secret, meant to be part of secret mystical teachings. Eventually so many were part of them almost everyone in the city of Athens knew what the teachings were. Which is why we know as much as we do about them now. The rituals happened sometime in September and commemorated the myth of Demeter and Persephone alongside the changing of the seasons. The priestesses and initiates took on a fourteen day long challenge. Involving purification rituals, sacrifices, fasting, and ending in a procession from Athens to Eleusis. The city that gave Demeter aid and shelter during her search for her daughter. We don’t know exactly what these rites were or the rituals that had to be performed. But, most scholars theorize they were an actual reenactment of the rape and capture of Persephone, followed by the agony of Demeter’s search for her. I will leave it up to you on what you think, this all depends on how they interrupted the story of her “kidnapping” and we just simply don’t know.
Today, modern pagans and witches honor her through seasonal rituals, offerings of flowers and pomegranates, and meditations on life’s cycles.
What does Persephone look like?
When spring arrives and flowers bloom, or when the underworld calls with its shadowy depths, Persephone is there. She often appears as a young woman with golden hair, wearing a crown of flowers in the upper world, her dress woven with blossoms. In the underworld, she’s a regal queen, her robes dark and shimmering, a crown of iron or bone atop her head, holding a pomegranate or a torch. For me, she appears as a figure of light and shadow, her eyes glowing with both warmth and depth, a pomegranate in one hand and a bundle of wheat in the other, symbolizing her dual realms.
Persephone and Her Relationship to Hades
Persephone’s relationship with Hades is one of mutual love and respect, not coercion. In ancient art, they’re depicted as equals, sitting side by side on their thrones, ruling the underworld together. Hades, often misunderstood as a villain, is a devoted partner who honors Persephone’s power. Their love bridges life and death, showing us that true partnership balances light and shadow. Persephone brings renewal to the underworld, while Hades offers her a realm to rule—a perfect harmony of opposites.
Persephone and Duality
As a grey witch, I always look at how a deity’s energy can help me maintain balance and reflect cosmic duality. Persephone’s dual nature as both spring maiden and underworld queen is a profound lesson in integration. She’s nurturing, bringing life to the earth, yet formidable, ruling over the dead with authority. She embodies the duality of light and dark, growth and decay, love and power. Persephone reminds us that we can hold both—blooming in our light while rooting deep into our shadows.
My story with Persephone: A Matron of Strength and Rebirth
Persephone has been my matron deity for over ten years, a guiding light through my own cycles of transformation, a mirror reflecting the many facets of my being, and a beacon of strength when I needed to reclaim my power. When I first connected with her, I was in a season of deep shadow—grieving a profound personal loss, feeling uprooted, and searching for my own sovereignty amidst a storm of emotions that left me feeling like a seedling buried too deep to ever bloom. I was also wrestling with my own complex nature, a tapestry of multiple beings woven into one soul—light and shadow, mystic and warrior, dreamer and realist. I often felt fragmented, unsure how to integrate these identities into a cohesive whole. At the same time, I was grappling with a dynamic in my life that mirrored Persephone’s own struggle: a suffocating relationship with a controlling force, much like her mother, Demeter, who clung to her daughter with an iron grip, unable to let her grow into her own power.
Persephone’s story resonated deeply with me because I saw myself in her desire to escape her mother’s overbearing love. In many myths, Demeter’s devotion to Persephone borders on obsession, keeping her sheltered as Kore, the eternal maiden, and refusing to let her explore the depths of her own destiny. I felt that same weight in my life—a force that wanted to keep me small, safe, and unchanging, even as my soul yearned to break free and evolve. I longed to step into my own power, to embrace the chaos and shadows within me, just as Persephone did when she descended to the underworld. During a meditation one night, under the dim glow of a crescent moon, I felt her presence more vividly than ever before. She appeared at a crossroads between a blooming meadow and a dark cave, her figure both radiant and shadowed, holding a pomegranate in one hand and a torch in the other. Her eyes held the weight of a thousand cycles, and her voice was a soft whisper carrying ancient wisdom: “You are the seed. Descend to grow.” That moment marked the beginning of our sacred bond, a connection that has since woven itself into the very fabric of my spiritual practice.
Through working with Persephone, I’ve learned to embrace my own darkness—not as something to fear, but as fertile soil for growth. She showed me that the shadows I feared were not my enemy but a necessary part of my evolution, a place where I could root deeply and rise stronger. More importantly, she taught me to accept the multiplicity of my nature. I am not one being but many, a constellation of identities that shift and shimmer like the seasons. Persephone, who herself embodies duality—spring maiden and underworld queen—guided me to see this as a strength, not a fracture. She whispered to me in meditations and through synchronicities, encouraging me to weave my many selves into a tapestry of power, to honor the mystic who seeks ancient wisdom, the warrior who fights for her truth, and the dreamer who dances in the light. With her guidance, I learned to stand in my fullness, embracing all that I am without apology.
Persephone’s relationship with Hades also became a profound lesson for me, a reflection of the kind of love that fosters growth rather than stifles it. Unlike the suffocating control of Demeter, Hades offers Persephone a love that empowers her to bloom into her most powerful self. In their sacred partnership, Hades doesn’t seek to diminish her light but to nurture it, providing a realm where she can rule as queen and fully step into her sovereignty. Ancient depictions of them seated side by side on their thrones, equals in power, speak to a love that is both fierce and tender—a love that allows Persephone to evolve while honoring her duality. Hades fosters her growth by giving her the space to explore her shadows, to wield her power over the underworld, and to return to the upper world as a symbol of renewal. Through their love, I learned what it means to be truly seen and supported—to be loved in a way that encourages you to become the most powerful version of yourself. This love is mirrored in my own marriage each and every day.
Over the years, Persephone has guided me through countless seasons of change—times of loss, rebirth, and self-discovery. She’s been a constant presence, her energy a reminder that true strength comes from integrating all parts of myself, from blooming in my light while honoring the depths of my shadow. She’s taught me to love fiercely, as she loves Hades, and to evolve through every season of life, just as she moves between the upper world and the underworld. As my matron, she’s not just a deity I work with—she’s a mirror, reflecting my own journey of transformation, a guide who has helped me escape the confines of those who would keep me small, and a teacher who has shown me how to claim my sovereignty by embracing my many beings. Persephone’s magic has been a lifeline, a reminder that I, too, can descend into my shadows and rise as a queen.

A fundamental pillar of Paganism is working with the deities that one believes in. While all practicing Pagans have varying beliefs about the gods and goddesses, most agree that honoring their deities is a great way to connect with them and further their spiritual goals. But, again remember not every pagan works with deities. Also remember there are literally thousands of different deities out there in the multiverse and which ones you choose to honor will often depend significantly upon what pantheon your spiritual path follows. This eBook will walk you thru the different ways to view deities, what a deity can be, and the basics to start building a deep meaningful relationship with one.

The new moon in Taurus on April 27, 2025, arrives to bathe us in a grounding, sensual energy that invites us to root deeply into the earth and cultivate lasting abundance. This new moon, nestled in the steadfast, nurturing, and pleasure-seeking earth sign of Taurus, offers a sacred moment to plant seeds of stability, self-worth, and beauty in our lives. New moons are always a time to start fresh, set intentions, and envision your future—but this Taurus new moon, coming just after Earth Day, doubles as a powerful opportunity to connect with the natural world and honor your own worth. For me, this moon feels especially significant after my recent journey of embracing winter’s magic in Minnesota, as it continues the theme of aligning with nature’s cycles and finding peace in stillness.
Taurus is all about grounding, luxury, and the appreciation of life’s simple pleasures. This new moon encourages us to slow down, savor the moment, and build a foundation for long-term growth. As a sign ruled by Venus, the planet of love and beauty, Taurus reminds us to prioritize self-care, indulge in sensory delights, and cultivate a deep sense of self-worth. This new moon is the time to connect with the most stable, abundant version of yourself—the one that makes you think, “I am worthy of all the beauty and richness life has to offer.” Let this New Moon in Taurus anchor you in the earth’s embrace, helping you manifest a life of security, pleasure, and enduring growth.
New moon what it is and why we honor it
Every month, the new moon ushers us into a fresh cycle, a moment to pause, reflect, and set intentions. Before we dive into Taurus’s earthy magic, let’s ground ourselves in the essence of the new moon itself. This lunar phase is a time to cleanse your energy, set intentions for the cycle ahead, and plant the seeds of what you wish to manifest. But intentions alone aren’t enough—you must pair them with action and energy to bring them to life. The new moon supports you in this process, offering a fertile space for new ideas, beginnings, and growth.
Historically, our ancestors honored the new moon as a time of rest and renewal, using the darkness of the night sky to reflect and plan, much like they did during seasonal shifts. Think of your intentions as seeds you’re planting now, to be nurtured over the lunar cycle and harvested by the full moon. Each new moon carries its own unique magic, influenced by the zodiac sign it falls in. To learn more about working with the new moon, check out my previous blog post here. Taurus: The Sign of Grounding and Abundance
Each new moon is amplified by the zodiac sign it occupies, and this time, we’re blessed with the steady, sensual energy of Taurus. So, who is Taurus?
Taurus, symbolized by the bull, is the second sign of the zodiac, governing those born between April 20 and May 20. As an earth sign ruled by Venus, Taurus embodies stability, beauty, and a deep connection to the physical world. It’s the sign of the gardener, the artist, and the lover of life’s pleasures—think blooming flowers, a warm meal, or the feel of soft grass beneath your feet. Taurus energy is slow, deliberate, and deeply rooted, encouraging us to build solid foundations for our dreams. It’s also a fixed sign, meaning it’s all about perseverance, loyalty, and seeing things through to the end.
Taurus Constellation
Taurus is one of largest constellations in the northern sky. The constellation is symbolized by the bull’s head. Not only that it is one of the oldest constellations and one of the first ones to spoken and written about. Its history dates back to the Bronze Age .It sits in the evening sky close to the famous constellation Orion and it includes a famous star cluster the pleidess.
According to Greek mythology, the constellation Taurus was placed in the sky by the god Zeus. That’s because Zeus changed himself into a beautiful white Bull to win the affections of the Phoenician princess Europa. After Europa hopped onto the Bull’s back, the Bull swam across the Mediterranean Sea, taking Europa all the way to the island of Crete. Later, Zeus and Europa became the parents of Minos, the legendary king of Crete. In another Greek myth, Zeus’s wife, Juno, changed her lover, Io, into a heifer or bull to hide her from Zeus
Meanwhile, the Zuni of New Mexico used the Pleiades cluster as an agricultural calendar. When the Pleiades – which the Zuni called the Seed Stars – disappeared into the western dusk in spring, they knew it was safe to plant their seeds, as the danger of frost had passed.
Now for the oldest myth I can find. In Babylonian mythology, the bull was known as the Heavenly Bull, or MUL.APIN. This constellation is connected to the story of Gilgamesh. He was the king of the Sumerian city state of Uruk. In the book The Epic of Gilgamesh, the king has to fight the Heavenly Bull. This animal was sent by the goddess Ishtar to kill Gilgamesh. She was so angry at him for not falling for her advances that she thought he deserved to die. Gilgamesh is considered to be represented by the constellation Orion, which is right next to Taurus. The story goes that they are still fighting their battle in the skies.
Taurus: The Sign of Sensuality and Stability
Taurus is the embodiment of earthy sensuality, ruled by Venus, the planet of love, beauty, and pleasure. This sign revels in the material world—think lush gardens, fine fabrics, and the scent of blooming flowers. Taurus energy is grounded, patient, and deeply connected to the body, encouraging us to slow down and savor life’s delights. As a fixed earth sign, Taurus is the rock of the zodiac, offering stability, reliability, and a steadfast commitment to growth.
This new moon in Taurus is a time to embrace your inner gardener, planting seeds that will grow into lasting abundance. Taurus, ruled by Venus, invites us to focus on self-love, beauty, and the creation of a secure foundation. We may feel a surge of desire to nurture ourselves, to indulge in sensory pleasures, and to build a life that feels both luxurious and stable. Use this energy to root deeply into your values, to honor your worth, and to cultivate a sense of peace that withstands life’s storms.
Taurus: The Sign of Self-Worth
Taurus rules the second house in astrology, often called the house of values and possessions. This house governs our relationship with money, self-worth, and the material world, reflecting how we build security and abundance in our lives. Taurus, as the ruler of this house, teaches us that true abundance begins with self-worth. This sign encourages us to value ourselves deeply, to recognize our inherent worth, and to create a life that reflects that value.
Taurus energy is a reminder that we are enough, just as we are. It’s the sign that helps us cultivate a strong sense of self-esteem, grounded in authenticity rather than external validation. During this new moon, focus on what makes you feel worthy, secure, and connected to your body and the earth. Taurus invites us to build a life that feels rich in every sense—emotionally, spiritually, and materially.
Themes of the Taurus New Moon
Every new moon carries themes tied to its zodiac sign, and this Taurus new moon is all about grounding, abundance, and self-worth. We’ll feel a deep pull to slow down, to root into the present moment, and to nurture ourselves with intention. This new moon is about building a foundation for lasting growth, indulging in life’s pleasures, and honoring our inherent value. If you’ve been neglecting your needs or doubting your worth, this is your cosmic invitation to prioritize yourself and create a life that feels secure and beautiful. Keep in mind that this new moon follows Earth Day, amplifying its earthy energy and encouraging us to deepen our connection with nature.
Grounding: Anchor yourself in the present and connect with the earth’s stability.
Abundance: Plant seeds for financial, emotional, and spiritual prosperity.
Self-Worth: Recognize your value and build a life that reflects it.
Sensuality: Indulge in sensory pleasures and honor your body.
Stability: Create a solid foundation for your dreams.
Patience: Embrace the slow, steady pace of growth.
Beauty: Surround yourself with beauty and create a life that feels luxurious.
Nurturing: Care for yourself and your environment with love.
What to Be Cautious Of With the Taurus New Moon
While Taurus energy is grounding and nurturing, it can also lead to stubbornness and resistance to change. Taurus loves comfort and stability, which might make us cling to old habits or routines, even when they no longer serve us. Be mindful of becoming too rigid—allow yourself to adapt and grow while staying rooted in your values. Additionally, Taurus’s love of luxury can tip into overindulgence, so balance your desire for pleasure with mindfulness and moderation.
This new moon also calls for balance between stability and growth. While Taurus encourages us to build a solid foundation, don’t let that anchor you into stagnation. Use this energy to create security, but remain open to new possibilities. As I’ve learned through my own journey with winter’s stillness, there’s magic in slowing down—but growth often requires us to step beyond our comfort zone, even in small ways.
Taurus and Duality
As a grey witch, I always seek the duality in every energy I work with, including the new moon and the zodiac sign it occupies. Let’s explore the duality of Taurus. On one hand, Taurus is nurturing, sensual, and grounded, offering a stable foundation for growth and a deep appreciation for life’s pleasures. This energy is perfect for cultivating self-worth, building abundance, and rooting into the present moment. On the other hand, Taurus can be stubborn and resistant to change, sometimes leading to stagnation or an overattachment to material comforts. This duality reminds us that while stability is essential, we must also remain flexible to evolve.
The new moon itself is a liminal space, embodying duality through its balance of light and shadow. It’s a time of beginnings, but those beginnings are born from endings—a cycle of death and rebirth. Just as I learned to embrace winter’s stillness as a precursor to spring’s renewal, this Taurus new moon invites us to find harmony between grounding and growing, between indulgence and discipline.

This month’s full moon graces the skies on April 12th bringing balance and harmony with the scales of Libra as the pink moon blossoms. The energy behind this Pink Full Moon is one of Action, taking advantage of opportunities, bringing dreams into fruition, and balancing our relationships. As the pink moon blooms we will feel more forward momentum and a greater sense of clarity when it comes to our path ahead in life. In the days and weeks following this Full Moon, we may feel that we have finally shed an old cycle as dead petals fall to the ground and new ones open and bloom. Bringing us into a compassionate place of balance with ourselves and in each of our relationships in life. Come join me in this blog post as our petals open and blossom with balance under the pink full moon in Libra.
First, What is the Full Moon
Over the centuries, the Moon has played a significant role in different cultures and traditions. The full moon simply put is when the moon is completely illuminated in the sky and it has reached it’s peak in this lunar cycle in the sky. When the moon is completely illuminated it’s time for all to reach full expression. The full moon is the most powerful and potent time of the entire lunar cycle.
A full moon occurs when the transit (moving) Sun and Moon are in the exact opposite positions in the Zodiac (called an opposition). The full moon greatly affects humans and it’s no wonder it does because, there’s a scientific reason for this – we are made up of 60% or more of water. Full Moons are the peak point of the lunar cycle: at this time of the month, the light of the Sun is fully illuminating the Moon, and the luminaries are exactly opposing one another from our perspective on Earth. This potent alignment offers us opportunities to gain more awareness about what is moving in our inner and emotional world, and information previously uncertain or hidden could be revealed at this time.
With the moon being fully illuminated it creates this portal to some of the most potent energy to connect to for us to manifest our desires and dream life. This portal creates a connection to our peak creative energy and the deep seated creative passions we all have within us. This creative energy and power is the energy we need to actually do and create the things and lifestyle we need to manifest what we desire. With the new moon phase being about planting the seeds of what you want to manifest, the full moon is about actually doing the work and moving the energy to make your manifesting happen. The full moon allows you to bridge the connection between these energies and themes and bring them into your life while reminding you how important it is to have them in your life not only when the moon is illuminated in the sky for you to see.
There are so many ways to work with the full moon, to learn more about the basics of working with the full moon energy check out my blog post here and you can watch my class all about lunar magic. But, remember each full moon will be slightly different and have different practices to add and different ways to do it based on which zodiac sign the full moon is currently in at the time.
The Pink Moon
As the sun brightens up our lives with longer days beckoning the plants to grow and flowers to bloom once again. The night time skies shimmer with the ethereal and refreshing energy of the full moon known as the Pink moon. The Pink Moon is a name given to the April full moon, originating from the pink flowers, known as wild creeping phlox, that typically bloom during this time of year in North America. However, despite the name, the Moon itself doesn’t actually appear pink but instead takes on its usual golden or white hue. The energy of this pink moon is palpable with its anticipation for new opportunities, new beginnings, and fresh intentions. Just as the pink flowers of spring are blooming after a long winter, this full moon encourages us to shed the old and embrace the new.
Even though the Worm moon last month in March was the first full moon of spring; this pink moon is the one that really tells us spring has sprung! The pink moon is a reminder of the cyclical nature of life, encouraging us to embrace transformation, nurture growth, and find beauty in the always changing world around us. Use the Pink Moon as a time to pause, reflect, recalibrate, and make sure you’re moving in the right direction. Under the shimmering glow of this pink moon you will feel a pull to truth-seeking, boundary-setting, and energetic maintenance.
As with most pagan names there will be different ones for each culture so below I listed any of the other names for the Pink moon I could find across the Earth. The common themes for these moons are; the end of Winter, the beginning of Spring, new beginnings, renewal, and the movement of nature.

So, who is Libra?
As the seventh sign in the zodiac, Libra is ruled by Venus, the planet of love, beauty, and relationships. The air element, associated with intellect and communication, governs Libra, adding a layer of social intelligence and charm to this sign and how they interact with the rest of the zodiac. Libra is known for its need for balance and harmony, its social grace, its ability to foster cooperation and compromise, and its keen eye for beauty and aesthetics.
Libra, the scales of balance
Libra is unique in the zodiac for it is the only one represented by an inanimate object; the scales. All other signs are represented by a human or an animal. The symbol of the scales represents the necessity of balance in every area of life. They are a reflection of what we are truly working to achieve: a balance between light and dark with the right amounts of each. Not only in our live but, also in the energy balance of the multiverse as a whole. When the Moon is in the accommodating sign of Libra, you will feel much more focused on creating balance and harmony all around you. You will be forced to set things on the cosmic scale of the multiverse and see their true nature and weight. Libra doesn’t just appreciate balance and what the scales has to say. Libra also seeks out the imbalance, and welcomes it with open arms so they can fix it. They view it as their cosmic responsibility to set everything on the scales around them to maintain cosmic balance and harmony.
The Libra Constellation
Libras constellation lies in the southern sky. The association of this region of the sky with scales was seen in both babylon and Rome. It is said that the Moon was in Libra when Rome was founded even. Which made Libra very sacred to the people of the city. The Romans considered Libra to be associated with balanced seasons and equal length of night and day. Most likely due to the fact that when this constellation is the most visible is right after the autumn equinox. The Romans believed the scales were held by the goddesses Astraea or Lustitia, the goddess of truth and justice, up in the night sky. Unlike the romans the ancient Greeks, did not hold Libra in such high esteem. For they thought Libra was just the outstretched claws of the constellation Scorpius the Scorpion without its own myth for it being placed amongst the stars.

Libra the sign of Fairness and Justice
Libra is an intellectual sign concerned with fairness, equality, and justice. Libra wants everyone in the world to be treated fairly, with dignity and respect, and to have equal rights and protections. No one is above anyone else on this planet for we all are one and from the same source, and Libras scales force you to remember that. Libra feels deep pain when looking down from the stars, to see all of the fighting and destruction in the world. They seek harmony and honesty, using their innate empathy as a driving force to seek justice for others. Libra craves for everyone to just get along living alongside each other in peach and harmony. They are willing to do anything and to make any compromise to get it, even at the cost of themselves at times.
Libra the sign of connection and relationships
Libra is ruled by Venus, the planet of love, beauty, and pleasure. During this full Moon, the energies of Libra will be magnified, inviting us to focus on creating balance in our relationships, and remembering the importance of the dance of give and take to maintain it. Libra’s essence is about fostering meaningful connections and harmony with all those around us. Libra does this by finding ways to unite opposites and achieve compromise through active and loving relationships. It’s also a time to envision healthy, supportive relationships that can honor our soul’s path while we honor others’ paths. It can be challenging to form partnerships where both people’s individual life paths are honored. We need partners who can walk with us while walking their own paths.
Chiron the wounded healer is active
Chiron, the asteroid named after the wounded healer, is active under this Full Moon adding a layer of potent healing to the transformative energy of the pink moon. By forcing us to tend to and weed out the wounds that hurt us the most to allow us to fully bloom. This is because, Chiron represents the forever wounds that become a part of our being. They are the wounds that cut us to our core, the ones we think about when we are alone at night, and the ones that never truly leave us. Chiron is one of my favorite energies to work with and I feel he is overlooked so much when he is active. So, who is he? He is the most famous centaur, from later Greek Mythology, and he was known to be a wise man and a healer. In Greek Mythology, it was Chiron who taught humanity the constellations. That’s huge! Chiron is our celestial teacher. On top of that, many well known Greek gods and goddesses looked to him for spiritual advice, most will know him nowadays through the hero Hercules. Chiron wasn’t necessarily on a self-healing journey, but by being of service to others and sharing his story as a teacher, he too, experienced healing and became known as the wisest healer and teacher of them all. But remember, Chiron’s energy is not about “fixing” your wounds, rather it’s about radically accepting them. It’s about knowing that our wounds are part of this earthly experience and don’t prevent us from being able to lead a beautiful and fulfilling life . One that is full of purpose instead of suffering. Chiron wants us to acknowledge our wounds as a part of the fabric of our destiny, and something that can make us stronger, wiser, and more compassionate. When Chiron is active some of the most profound healing can happen. To learn more about him check out my guide HERE!
Venus the planet of love goes direct
Venus, the Goddess of Love and Beauty, is also adding a third layer of healing under this Full Moon as she prepares to emerge from the underworld. After being retrograde since March 1st forcing us into the shadows of our hearts and the wounds of our relationships. She will be pulling on our hearts to act on those insights she has shown us. By forcing us this past month to question our relationships or dynamics and patterns playing out within them. Those cycles we noticed with our loved ones we are wanting to break? Now is the time to be able to do just that with Venus’s compassionate embrace. Be willing to release or let something go that no longer aligns with this new rebirth of the heart that Venus has been instigating for us. Then watch as your relationships bloom with a deepened love under Venus and the pink full moon.
What to be cautious of during a Libra full moon
Libra is one of the most beloved signs in the zodiac, I think mainly due to its loving, and compassionate nature. That is really truly willing to do anything for you to keep the peace, including avoiding at all cost confrontation and conflict. While this energy will have a loving and reviving energy to our relationships, connections, and the bonds we hold most dear. We do have a few things to be cautious of and keep in mind with this Libra new moon and its energy. Libra’s deep desire to maintain the peace and harmony around us may allow us to let others run us over, take advantage of us, and we may just sit and duck our heads. Instead of speaking up for ourselves, you may choose to just keep the peace instead. Be cautious with this because, peace in the community is not worth the cost of your inner peace. To gain true balance and equilibrium in the multiverse your happiness matters just like the rest. Let’s not forget as an air sign as well Libra has a gift with their tongue and is able to make you feel quite charming. So, if you do speak up keep that in mind with the words you choose and whom you speak them too. Don’t unwilling use you golden tongue right now to lure others to you whom shouldn’t be.
Libra full moon and duality
Since, I am a grey witch every single energy I work with I look for the duality in that energy and how I can connect to it. First let’s talk about the duality of the full moon. The full moon itself is all about duality as it is another time of transformation, transition, and rebirth. During this time we are pushed into a liminal space that forces us to look at the things, people, and places that have been obstacles or holding us back. This can be a thing of beauty and hope as well as a thing of pain and darkness which forces us into duality. Second, let’s talk about the duality of Libra. With Libra I feel the duality is pretty obvious since this energy is all about balance and equilibrium. Which means equal parts of two different things. When Libra sets things on the scales they are acknowledging the importance of both existing but, that finding balance between both is key. Libra reminds us that embracing duality and balance is the key; for everything is all connected.

Once, you feel your physical environment is set up, I want you to get into sacred container by taking some deep breaths and envisioning the new moon above you. Sending grey, silvery light full of balance, equilibrium, and duality from the scales of Libra down on you tonight. Now in your right hand place 3 bay leaves, envisioning white light of intention and planting seeds. Allow that light to guide your heart and show you what it is you need to start. Whether it be new habits, relationships, or finding new ways to do your part. Follow that light to see what it is you need to truly live a life of balance, fairness, and harmony. Once you feel those intentions anchored in your heart take your pen or marker and write each of the three on separate bay leaves. Than place in the bowl on the right, and light your white candle connecting those intentions to the white energy of intention and the full moon above. Next, take a deep breath and in your left hand place 3 bay leaves, envisioning black light of letting go and releasing. Allow that light to guide your heart and show you what it is that is blocking you. From truly being able to reach a state of balance, fairness, and equality. Is there an addiction, a trauma, or relationship no longer creating growth but holding you back? What is sitting there in the shadows of you heart tipping your scales to far into the dark? Once you feel you know what that blockage is for you to release and you feel ready to let it go. Take your pen or marker and write each of the three blockages on separate bay leaves. Than place them in the bowl on the left, and light the black candle, connecting you with the black energy of our shadow and releasing. Next, take the deepest of breaths pick up the bay leaves on the right and as you light them in the candle flame repeat of white, ” I light these leaves to represent the light of my intentions set this night.” Next, take another deep breath and pick up the bay leaves on the left and as you light them in the black candle flame repeat, “I light these bay leave to represent the darkness and past in my life I choose to release”. Lastly, take the ashes from the bowl on both left and the right and pour them into the center bowl as you say. “”As the scales of Libra find balance tonight, so too shall my life be in perfect equilibrium and invoke peace and harmony for myself and all those around me.” Take this bowl of balance created with your intentions planted, and your blockages released and leave it in the center of your altar until the new moon shines its silvery rays again over your life.

The new moon in March is set to ignite the night sky with the passionate energy allowing us to met any challenge and obstacle with determination. This new moon occupied by a solar eclipse is here to challenge your comfort zone, push you toward growth, and help you step into a more authentic version of yourself. This new moon we will find ourselves in the headstrong, motivated, energetic, confident, independent, and passionate fire sign of the ram, Aries. New moons are an opportunity to start fresh, plant seeds, and envision your future—and this month’s new moon in Aries happens to be the first new moon of the astrological year. In other words? Consider it time to set your “New Year’s” resolutions for the astrological year. For me this is the third time during the year I set year long resolutions. This moon in particular means really big change, taking big, bold, brave steps towards the life your truly want to live.
Aries is full of energy, enthusiasm, and spunk, and wants to get things going. The new moon in Aries is an opportune time to initiate change, take action towards goals, and renew oneself. Aries is also the sign of Self, which means you get to be a little bit selfish during this new moon phase. During this new moon in Aries, it’s time for you to focus on yourself and be willing to face change head on without hesitation in your mind or fear in your heart. This new moon is the time to connect with your highest, best, most amazing version of you – the one that makes you think “holy sh*t I can’t believe this is my life.” Let this new Moon in Aries ignite a fiery burst of energy within you. Allow it to start a bright, burning, raging fire of change, and a passionate pursuit of our goals.
New moon what it is and why we honor it
Every month, the New Moon carries us over the threshold of a new beginning. So, let’s talk about the new moon in general before we ignite our passion and take determined action with the Aries new moon. The new moon is the time to reflect and cleanse your energy. It is a time to set your intentions for what you wish to attract this lunar cycle. But, remember every intention set requires action and energy from your part as well. You can’t just set an intention and miraculously it is yours. You must also put the movement of energy behind it with action steps.
The new moon energy is there to support you in manifesting what you want. The new moon is a time to allow new ideas and energy to flow with you. It is a time to honor new beginnings, and the turning over of a cycle. Think of these intentions as seeds you are planting for this lunar cycle to be ready to harvest by the full moon. Use this time to rest, reflect, and plant what you will grow just as your ancestors across many cultures did while there was little light in the night sky for them to use.
Each New Moon is unique, offering its own magic within each month. To learn more about the foundations of working with the new moon, and how it affects you, read more here in my previous blog post. And to learn more about the moon in general and lunar magic you can read my comprehensive guide on the topic here. You can also watch my class on YouTube with Divination Academy here!
The Solar eclipse energy
Before we talk about the ram and the Aries energy the new moon is going to be in we have another energy to talk about. The solar eclipse that will be taking place as well. So what is a solar eclipse? A Solar Eclipse appears when the Moon is between the Sun and the Earth, blocking out the light of the Sun. It’s considered to be three times more potent than a regular New Moon because it’s happening in close proximity to the Lunar Nodes of Destiny. During a solar eclipse symbolically, the energies associated with the Moon eclipse those of the Sun, so that feelings and emotions dominate over the ego and the will.
Beyond its astronomical wonder, the solar eclipse holds spiritual significance for many. It symbolizes a time of darkness and spiritual renewal, offering an opportunity for introspection and the shedding of old energies. In astrology, the eclipse signifies the darkness of the ego and the potential for spiritual rebirth, marking a moment to release past patterns and embrace new perspectives.
Eclipses bring about energy of great change meant to shake things up. To create an intense time of great transformation, rebirth, and growth. A solar eclipse specifically is a time of new beginnings, taking initiative, and starting brand new things like jobs, businesses, projects, and relationships. This energy is all about change, transformation, good luck, growth, and abundance. This energy is known to change the wheel of fate and awaken things for us. Despite the fated nature, Eclipses should not be feared but welcomed as a source of evolutionary change that leads to a powerful yet often uncomfortable, and even painful transformation
Who is Aries?
Like, I said before each new moon will be amplified and influenced by the zodiac sign we find it in and this time the new moon is in the sign of Aries. So who is Aries?
Aries symbolized by the ram is the first sign of the zodiac which makes it the go-getter of the Zodiac. People born between March 21st and April 19th are considered Aries. As the first sign of the zodiac, Aries symbolizes new beginnings, assertiveness, and the pursuit of our passions. It’s ruled by Mars, the God of war, making the ram a fearless fighter. Aries is a fire sign, and its energy is passionate, dynamic, and driven. Through the sign of the Ram, we tap into our inner fire, embody our inner warrior, and work on developing a conscious relationship with our anger. Aries is the sign to commit to personal goals and have the fiery motivation to see them through to the end. Aries is the sign to connect us with our capacity to be the leaders of our lives, to take paths that no one ever walked before, to go toward the direction that instinctively calls to us. Aries, is known to be a little bit faster to react because, they are more intrigued by doing something they’ve never done before. Being ruled by mars Aries is much more willing to take a risk or take a gamble by pushing into the unknown and usually being the first one to do it as well.
Aries Constellation
Aries is one of the smallest constellations of the zodiac sitting in Northern sky. This constellation is located between Pisces to the west and Taurus to the east. The constellation has been associated with a ram since ancient times. In ancient Babylon, the Aries star constellation was known by the name CHUN-GA, or Aries. Also, the Persians, the ancient Egyptians, and the Minoans called it ‘Aries’ as well. Ultimately, by way of Greece, the constellation came to Rome, where astronomers gave it the Latin name ‘Aries’; meaning ram.
I find that Aries has one of the largest varieties of legends and myths about it’s placement in the skies and it’s association with the ram. One of the simplest and most commonly known legends attributes the name of the constellation to Zeus, who turned into a ram while fleeing the overpowering Titans which is why the image was place amongst the stars.
In another, less well known telling of the Aries constellation myth, a Roman writer Hygenius describes how Bacchus aka Dionysus (greek), the god of wine, together with his cheerful entourage, unexpectedly lost his way in the vastness of the Libyan Desert. In this dry wasteland, they were soon plagued by terrible thirst. Fortunately, they met a friendly ram that led Bacchus and his party to a source of water, saving them from certain death. In gratitude, Bacchus placed the ram amongst the stars in the heavens for all eternity.
In the most well known Aries constellation myth of Greek origin, King Athamas appointed his eldest son Phrixos as his heir to the throne. His current wife, Ino, however, wanted to see her own son named the heir. For this reason, the queen devised a plan to cause the crops of their land to not flourish and grow. She let the seed rot and spoil, so when they were planted the following year they would not be able to grow.
Once the crops that season had failed to grow she convinced her husband, the king to consult an oracle that she had visited prior and had under her control. He was told that if he wanted to avoid another crop failure in the following year, he would have to sacrifice his son Phrixos; the one he had named as his heir.
The king had agreed but, on the day of the offering, a magnificent ram, summoned by Nephele (Phrixos’s biological mother) appeared in a shining golden fleece. Phrixos and his sister, Helle, swiftly mounted the ram’s back and flew away. But high above the strait separating Europe and Asia, Helle fell into the sea, where she drowned. The ram flew on with Phrixos on his back to the land of Colchis, where the boy was well received. Upon the Ram’s wish as a thanks for his service; Phrixos sacrificed him to the gods where he now resides in the heavens among the stars for all eternity.
Aries The Primal Sign Of Passion
Aries is the first sign of the zodiac which means it is the big bang, our life force, the element of fire, primal passion, anger, rage, and ruled by Mars the God of War- this sign is the sign of life itself. It is the spark needed to light the tinder for existence to evolve. It is our will to persist no matter what obstacles are in our way. This sign is a Cardinal sign which means it is a leader, an initiator, and a visionary of the cosmos.
This new Moon is a time to embrace our inner warrior. Aries is ruled by Mars, the planet of action, passion, and aggression. During this full Moon, we may feel a surge of energy, passion, and assertiveness. We can use this energy to break free from old patterns and beliefs that no longer serve us. We can assert our boundaries, speak our truth, and take action toward our deepest desires with the flames of burning passion.
Aries The Sign Of Independence
This sign is also a sign of independence which means it’s a time to focus on what YOU really truly want for YOU and not for others. You will feel many things coming up for you that may surprise you especially if you are a people pleaser. The energy of Aries really pushes you to think about what makes YOU and YOU alone happy and whole. One of Aries’ “lessons” is to show a pure part of ourselves to the world. By acting upon our own inner impulses (constructive ones!) without fear, and by abandoning the need to refine these impulses based on what others might want us to do or what others think we “should” do, we learn more about ourselves. If we learn to depend on ourselves, we exude an all-new aura of strength that comes from personal integrity and confidence, and strength.
Aries the sign of action
Aries is the zodiac sign of action, as it is associated with initiation, taking the lead, and making a mark on the world. Aries draws fire into the atmosphere, stimulating life force and vitality pushing us into action. Aries it the energy that lights the fire in our soul driving us to make our mark on the world. Aries teaches us that courage is the key to unlocking our full potential. And that comes from connecting your head to your heart, focusing your will, and taking consistent action. Aries is a cardinal sign, which means it is associated with taking the lead and driving change. Aries is nothing if not bold, preferring to act first and think later never hesitating to step into the unknown.
Aries the ruler of self
Since Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, Aries is also the ruler of the first house in astrology. Which is often called the house of self. In this house you are given a window into understanding more about your outward appearance, traits, characteristics, outlook, and sense of expression. This house is the location of your ascendant or rising sign, which speaks to how you present yourself in the world. Since Aries rules this house, Aries represents consciousness, that first awareness of the self, separate from others and eager to explore the world. Aries is the personal fire deep within your soul, it’s our true self. Aries is the zodiac sign that blazes with a strong sense of self-worth, self-assurance, and self- confidence. Aries has the purest sense of self it’s the sign that truly navigates life in the 1st person perspective and approaches the world only as they authentically are.

What To Be Cautious Of With The Aries new Moon
Amidst the beauty of this lunar energy, there may also be feelings of explosive anger and outbursts. The energy of Aries is grounded in Mars, which is all about aggression, war, and conflict. So, take the time to stop and think before you let the little things allow you to blow up right now and create conflicts in your life by making small things bigger than they need to be. It is essential during this time to stay grounded, and connected to who you are so your emotions don’t allow you to wander from your goals, let your ego get in the way, or allow your anger to create unnecessary conflict with others.
Also remember, as you tap into Aries’ pioneering spirit, that new Moons also highlight balance not just new beginnings. While you may feel the urge to charge ahead, don’t forget to pause, reflect, and ensure that your actions align with your higher purpose. Aries can sometimes push us toward impulsive decisions, so let the fire of this new Moon guide you with both confidence and mindfulness. It’s great to let our passion and motivation propel us forward without fear, but also remember that fear does serve a purpose. It keeps us safe and whole. So, while you use that bold, assertive, and headstrong Aries energy to pursue your dreams and goals make sure you listen to red flags of urgent danger that pop up along the way.
Aries and duality
Since, I am a grey witch every single energy I work with I look for the duality in that energy and how I can connect to it. This includes the full moon and the energy of the zodiac sign it currently is in. First, let’s look at the duality of Aries itself. Aries is known for being assertive and enjoying excitement, which can make it an energy that is full of passion, confidence and a bit impulsive. Which is an amazing energy for being able to truly let go of things no longer serving you by burning it away and moving forward in life with fiery motivation and passion. It can also be a potent time to really take steps towards the biggest goals for you unique path in life. However, it can also be known for that passion turning into a fiery temper. Which can cause us to lash out in anger towards those who are only trying to help us meet our goals and walk down our intended path. Once we feel discord in our relationships because of our own anger, it can make us feel isolated and cause us to no longer focus on the passion of this energy to meet our goals. Second, the new moon itself is all about duality and illuminating the night sky in both light and shadows. The new moon is all about rebirth, renewal, and the beginning of a new cycle, which puts you in a transitional liminal space, energy, and time. In order for you to be in a space to begin again, to transition, and be reborn you had to just come from an ending and death.

Ritual To Connect To Your Anger
Working with our anger can be a powerful, potent, and liberating experience. Anger in and of itself is not a negative. No emotion is negative since every emotion serves a function and is sending us a message. How we use our anger is what determines whether it’s constructive or destructive. As the Aries new moon summons your inner warrior, think of your anger as a battle cry to pay attention to your boundaries, your passions, and your unmet needs and/or desires. If you’ve been letting someone push you around, it’s time to address the unworkable behavior and create a new way of interacting. Don’t be afraid to simply just let some pent up anger out as well by just letting a scream, yell, shout, or cry out to mother nature and the cosmos.
Use the journal prompts below to connect to your anger in a quiet sacred container. You can amplify the affect right now by having a red, orange, or white candle burning next to you as you do this work. The candle will help you connect to the element of fire, the planet mars, and the energy of Aries. Once you have completed the prompts below, you can than take the answers and burn the list in your candle flame to release any of the unwanted and negative affects of the anger you have been harnessing during this session. Don’t forget to visualize you harnessing your anger in a productive and constructive way in the future to manifest it into you life as you are also releasing the unwanted affects.

Are there areas or causes in your life you need to harness your anger for the sake of justice and protecting others?
Is your anger being mistaken for something else? Like loneliness, hurt, passion, assertiveness etc.
Where in your life do you need to let go of anger and what does that look like?

As I stepped out of my car and put my feet onto the land that for 10,000 years has been known as the most sacred place in the United States, if not the Earth to the Dakota people. My body couldn’t help but, shake as my soul felt an embrace that overwhelmed me with a sense of home I had never known. As the energy of the land wrapped it’s arms around me I began to take in all that I could see. The trees standing taller then the ones near my home being tapped for their sap. The family of deer laying down in the wooded glen knowing they would be safe here on this land. The multi colored layers of sediment and rock as the only reminder of the ancient seas that once were here. Although I couldn’t see it yet, bdote was already beckoning my feet to start walking or running to where the mighty two rivers meet. Keeping the sands and clay used as the mold to shape all of humanity safe. The top of the geometric, war torn, keeper of history and hidden symbols; Fort Snelling was peeking at me from it’s strategic perch at the top of the bluff. Waiting for me to climb to the top and hear the stories locked within it’s walls. Walk the paths of the Dakota peoples most sacred land alongside me and hear the stories they both whispered and wept to me.
Where is Fort Snelling?
Before we walk down the paths running along these sacred rivers together I should make sure you know where those paths are. If you have never heard of this fort and National park you definitely won’t know. But, even if you have I still want to double check because, I have spent my whole life about 2 hours from it and had no idea it was here until this year! Let alone how important it was and it’s very extensive history. So, where are we? Well, we are in the heart of the Midwest within the United States. In the land of harsh cold, piles of snow, humid summers, and 10,000 lakes; the stare of Minnesota. Otherwise know to the Dakota peoples as “Mni Sota Makoce,” which translates to “the land where the water reflects the skies”. The fort itself is situated on a bluff overlooking two rivers, near Minneapolis and St. Paul, and is an unorganized territory within Hennepin County. The two rivers the fort overlooks are very special; one being the longest river in the united states the Mississippi. Than the other one being the third largest river in Minnesota, even being named after the state itself. Not only are they special due to their size, but at this exact spot is where the two mighty rivers meet and converge. Making this piece of land a very magical, spiritual, powerful, and strategic place to be.
Why the meeting of two rivers at fort Snelling is important?
So, why exactly does the fact that these two rivers meet matter so much? Why does it make this land so important? These long and important two rivers meeting here made it a place throughout history that was special and strategic for many reasons. It made this a place where the stories of many crossed paths here over the centuries. Including the Dakota, Ojibwe, enslaved people, fur traders, immigrants, and soldiers. The two rivers meeting here made it an ideal place for trade to happen allowing for those in the area to prosper. Even using the power and force of the river to transport wood down it making construction to expand easier as well. The two rivers created a landscape that had fertile lands full of resources. It made the land easy to defend allowing those who called the state home to keep their territory and families safe.
The sacred Dakota land Bdote
Not only was this land important because of the convergence of two major rivers within the state, this specific convergence was the location of a very sacred one for the first peoples to live on the land. While bdote can refer to any place where waters converge, many Dakota people consider this location as a sacred place of creation. In one of the most accepted creation myths amongst the people this spot is the first spot they stepped foot on Earth. After their long journey down the “Caŋku Wanaġi” or spirit road; starting from the seven stars of Orion’s belt, arriving at the convergence of the rivers through the milky way. It’s the place where the great creator picked up the unique clay like soil of “Maka Ina” or grandmother Earth in this spot. Then used it to mold and shape the first Dakota peoples with their spirits. It then became the place the Dakota tribes later spread out to establish the sacred sites in the surrounding areas. Although, later on the history of the land becomes steeped in darkness, blood, and loss. The land was taken away by colonizers, followed by resistance and hangings. Dakota elders now describes the Bdote as “where everything began and where everything began changing.” Which I could certainly feel as I stood on the bank where those two rivers meet with the trees standing strong behind me. We hold our lands sacred, but these lands are more sacred because of the history, because of the myth and the energies in the land.
There is a sense of duality in the land with it being the beginning of the Dakota peoples humanity here on Earth and the place where their people almost perished completely. Creating a sacredness that seeps into your soul faster then you can almost handle. For me, it brought tears to my eyes, stories whispered only my soul could hear, and a feeling like I was being recreated. Like a piece of me was returning back to a place it’s been before. A place that meant so much to it, it came rushing forward at it’s chance to be reunited again. As I walked among the trees, stopping to embrace the ones calling me to them; I listened to what each one had to say. Revealing to me that this was a place many have spent searching for while the Dakota always knew it was here. This was their garden of Eden, their place of origin, a place for sacred stories to be stored. This was a place to become whole, to unlock wisdom, and to reconnect to grandmother Earth.
History and use of the Fort
Once you move past the river bank and make your way up the bluff you move towards the fort itself. As you walk up to the stone fortress walls and take in the sight of the intimidating, awe inspiring, and weathered site of the fort; you can’t help but catch your breath. I was blown away at how big this structure was. to me it felt more like a citadel or small city then a fort. I was mesmerized at how old it looked and how strategically it was nestled into the bluff looking down at the land and two rivers below. As I got closer I only became more impressed by the number of buildings stretching out in front of me and confused at how I didn’t know this was here. With the number of buildings, the level of craftsmanship, and the energy coming off the land it was abundantly clear to me this place was more then important, but sacred and vital to my states existence. Which is why the entire way up here my family and I had been listening to the history I will tell you about now below.
The stone fort was constructed in the 1820’s and situated to help dissuade the British from encroaching on the Northwest part of our young country and for the protection of fur traders. The fort was initially named Fort Saint Anthony, but it was renamed Fort Snelling, after its architect and first commandant Colonel Josiah Snelling, when its construction was completed in 1825. The fort served to protect the fur trade and maintain stability between the Dakota and Ojibwe tribes. The fort was closed in 1858 after the US placed forts further West. Fort Snelling reopened during the Civil War to serve as a rendezvous point and training center for volunteer soldiers. During this period of time, Fort Snelling was also part of the Dakota War of 1862. As wars go, this one was short, over and done with in about six short weeks. But it was very bloody. In no other war in U. S. history were as many civilians killed in such a short time. This short time is a pretty dark chapter of the fort’s history with the fort playing a role in the removal of the Dakota from their sacred home land. For a time, the fort even served as an internment camp for the noncombatant Dakota. Housing mainly women and children. 38 of the residents were later moved to Mankato by order of Abraham Lincoln to be executed by hanging.
Today there is no physical sign of the internment camp. Except for a few placards where the history is taught and the square patch of land that is barren and still outlined by the trees. But, as I walked this part of the land next to the fort overwhelming tears had fallen from my eyes. Because the despair, the feeling of displacement, the loss of home and a sense of hope was still hanging heavy in the air, soaked in the ground, and hanging from the tree branches. The only other remnant you will find of this time is a memorial of a pipestone placed in front of the now visitor center for the state park. That is far away from where the internment camp was. This memorial is meant to commemorate the 1,600 Dakota people, including women and children, who were imprisoned there after the 1862 U.S.-Dakota War including the almost 300 who died. The issue with this memorial is it leaves a bad taste in your mouth, tears in your eyes and anger in your heart. Because, on this memorial I noticed how we had to hurt the tribes of the Dakota one more time with the words we engraved into it. We engraved each and every tribe name that was banned and exiled from their lands along with the word banned still written underneath it. Leaving a permanent written reminder of what was taken from them. The part that brought the most tears to my eyes was instead of honoring the lives of those we had allowed to die while we held them there ; we engraved the pipestone with the word half breeds. Reading those words became the second time in my life I felt overwhelming shame and disgust for being from Minnesota and what my people had done. Later, in the Fort’s history they made an attempt to make up for the losses they had caused by saving some lives. When Fort Snelling had a critical roll as a hospital for soldiers wounded in WWI an WWII.

Fort Snelling’s relationship with slavery
By the 1830s slavery was against the law throughout the north, and by entering Free Territory, an enslaved person was legally free. However, these laws were ignored at forts across the North, including Fort Snelling. On any given year between 15 and 30 enslaved people cooked, cleaned, and did laundry and other household chores for officers at the fort. In 1836, a doctor brought an enslaved person, a man named Dred Scott, to live at the fort where he met and soon married another enslaved person, Harriet Robinson. They were here in free territory but they were here as slaves and yet this fort, along with Fort Armstrong in Illinois, allowed them to sue for their freedom because they had been in free territory for a significant amount of time. The case went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Chief Justice Roger B. Taney, writing the majority decision in 1857, declared that Congress could not ban slavery in the territories. The Dred Scott decision inflamed passions in a nation that had become bitterly divided over slavery. This was such a critical, pivotal situation that they found themselves in. It divided a nation. It caused a war; the civil war. In 1861, the Civil War began. Minnesota had been the first state to offer troops for the Union Army. Fort Snelling even served as the central rendezvous and training center for Minnesota’s 25-thousand Civil War soldiers who would end up serving in the war.
Fort Snelling Memorial chapel
As we continued to walk past the fort, past the site of the internment camp, and the building for the museum a smaller building caught our eyes. This building was tucked off to the side with a cross on top, one lonely grave, and vibrant colored stained glass windows. We had come across the Christian church and chapel that now sits on top of Dakota sacred land. This chapel was covered on the outside with art and symbols telling the stories of the history of the white settlers of the land and the years of military service and history. You could see the templar inspired crosses in the stone, and the depictions of war heroes who had served at this post in the colorful windows. As we peered in through the windows you could see something I have never seen inside of church here in my state before. Instead of seeing religious symbols dominating the church I could see military regiment symbols, items, and flags decorating the interior. When looking closer one of the stained glass windows bears the coat of arms of the Third Infantry Regiment, oldest in the U.S. Army, who was once stationed at Fort Snelling. Which reminded me of what we heard the dedication of this specific chapel was intended to be from the beginning. This would be a place where the Veteran is Remembered. Chaplain Frank C. Rideout who had been an inspiration for its construction stated, “Primarily the Chapel will be a house of worship, but it will be much more – it is a unique and distinctive Minnesota memorial, a splendid monument to the patriotism, the moral earnestness and the convictions of the people of this state. It will be a perpetual reminder of their appreciation of those who made the supreme sacrifice in all our great wars. It will provide a shrine where the friends of those who have died for America may come, as on a holy pilgrimage, and offer up their thanks to Almighty God for the precious gift of friends who have been so fondly loved, and are now lost awhile.”
As I took in the sense of patriotism and pride I could feel at this spot and how it differed from any other church I had been to we continued to walk towards the entrance. That is when at the same time my eyes notice the white marble calling as a beacon for me to walk over to that I heard the little girls voice giggling as she played. Walking closer to the white marble sticking out of the ground that could only be a grave marker, I could feel her running around me and heading towards my son. Excited to have a little one to run too and play with. As I got close enough to finally read my jaw actually dropped at what it had to say. The little girl running around just wanting to play was the daughter of the colonel whom designed the fort and it was named after; Elizabeth Snelling . According to the inscription I was reading, her remains had been interned and consecrated here to honor the death of the first white children born on Minnesota soil. Apparently this was so important and such a point of pride this was the inscription for her final resting place instead of beloved daughter or any term of endearment. The sense of pride in settling and defending this land for the good of the white man is evident everywhere I look and in the energy I could feel surrounding this chapel as I walked away.
The fort today
The 2000 census listed Fort Snelling as an unorganized territory, meaning that it is officially not part of any state or country which is the most interesting thing I can find about it today. Other then that, I am told that when you visit during certain months like from memorial day to labor day you can gain entrance to the museum, the fort, and you will even see reenactors walking around. I am told that you can even get a very detailed tour as well. A tour of the fort buildings includes a lot of original and reconstructed evidence of what life at the fort was like during the earliest days of its establishment and up through the Civil War. Exhibits include reconstructions of the early life at the fort such as squad barracks of spare bunk beds, married enlisted men’s quarters, an officer’s somewhat less sparse accommodations, all the way up to the commandant’s home, complete with a dining room set with fine china. But, I didn’t get to see any of this during this trip. Because, I went in February when all of this was closed. We plan on going back so we can experience the inside of the fort as much as we have the land it sits on, the exterior of the fort, and all the structures around it.
While we couldn’t get into the fort on our first trip there was still so much to take in and learn about this towering stone structure just from the outside. From the symbolism of power being displayed in the massive red doors to enter the citadel. To the intimidating circle tower known as the Round Tower. that it is said used to house a cannon still standing as one of the oldest parts of the fort. As your eyes scan the many different buildings of the fort you see the mix of styles in architecture including Georgian, brick barracks, and stone structures. You see the stone walls and towers, strategically built in round and hexagonal shapes designed for the best possible defense. Plus the nearly mile-long row of yellow brick barracks on the far side of Taylor Avenue, built for the Spanish-American War. Reflecting its role as a military outpost and later, a key location for military operations and medicinal healing. Walking around all of these buildings with my fingers gliding along the stones and bricks, I couldn’t help but, feel a mix of things. The pride of the people who had built this place, lived here, and defended it with their lives to help allow my home state to thrive. But, also the sadness, the despair, and the hopelessness of those who came here against their will and the souls of the ill who never left. The immense loss of the sacred birthplace of the Dakota people who were meant to be the keepers of this land. While also feeling the comfort coming from the blue lights of spirits coming to walk besides me.
Final Thoughts
Today the fort exists as a symbol, one of pride and strength to some, to others, one of struggle and imprisonment. Fort Snelling also symbolizes both the expansion and exploitation of the region by the United States, and the intertwined histories of Black and Native people in what is now Minnesota. Fort Snelling is like this living breathing artifact. When you walk the grounds it produces a visceral feeling. Minnesota’s and America’s history is here on this land. People died on those grounds at Fort Snelling. People were confined. There were hardships as well as many noble things in defense of our country in times of war. From the day this area was taken by the U.S. in 1805, the fort has been a direct point of contact between Dakota people and the United States as a whole. The fort serves as a symbol and an actual demonstration of how Dakota-U.S. relations developed in the 1800’s and after. But the fact that it was built to be a symbol of the American empire is clear. The fact that it was the source of death and crimes against the Dakota people is also clear. It is a wounded site. Dakota people were imprisoned here. Dakota people died here. Recognition of the pain inflicted on the Dakota by the white settlers is still evident all over the site today even and too many outside the Dakota communities are completely unaware. I myself was until I started doing my research for this trip. So, if you can make a trip to this sacred and historical place; do it. I know I will be going back.
